MPs to get pay rise of £2,000 in April

This is shameful, whilst many brits are struggling to pay for food and heating.
Now we will have to chose between eating and keeping warm.

MPs will get a pay rise of more than £2,000 this year as many British people struggle with soaring energy and food costs.
The decision brings their overall salary from £81,932 to £84,144 from April 1 2022 – an exact increase of £2,212 per year.

Like myself I'm a parent 2 3 children and on a low income. I know I'll be struggling like many others.

What is other people thoughts on this

Lots of people on MN will be on similar salaries and will expect and get similar pay rises

@BaliB

They don’t vote for it themselves, you know?
Although its 'suggested' by an independent body, don't the politicians actually vote to ratify it?

No. The decision making process has been devolved to an entirely independent body. Of course individual MP's could refuse to accept it, but that is unlikely.

That’s 2.7% with prices rising at 10.2%. So this year they are guaranteed to be worse off to the tune of 7.5% on their base salaries.

And that’s £80K a year for a job that requires zero qualifications that any one of us could choose to do if we were willing to put in the time and effort it took to stand for Parliament.

They made different choices to me. They earn more than I do because they chose to do a job I wouldn’t like, put in work I wouldn’t not be willing to put in, and put up with sh.. I wouldn’t choose to put up with.

So, seeing as I had the choice and chose to do something else instead, I won’t complain about a pittance of a 2.7% pay rise, or the salary the job receives.

That’s why I don’t complain about what train drivers or doctors or nurses or teachers get paid either. They made their choices, knew how much they would earn, put in the work, got their jobs and earn their money. They all had the same choices. Any one of them could have done something else if they had wanted to. So they have no right to complain.

They do of course have every right to strike, or quit if they choose. They could quit and run for Parliament. It’s never too late. Some of those MPs are ancient.

It's terrible that MP's are getting 2.5% and the NHS are getting 1%.

This is a political choice that our government are making - it's not because they don't have the money - and it's wrong.

Tippexy · 12/02/2023 00:25

Where have you got 1% from @rexythedinosaur Confused

Namechanger355 · 12/02/2023 00:33

It’s bad timing

but we do need the brightest, best people in politics and for that we need to incentivise people to join from the private sector - ie they should want to be in politics rather than work in a consultancy for example

i would rather have capable people in politics rather than mr rich but dumb

but of course healthcare workers, teachers etc should get more - i don’t think the two are mutually exclusive

Emotionalstorm · 14/03/2023 22:05

Most people are getting a payrise this year so why can't the MPs have one ? £2k isn't much, after tax it's £1k.

FixTheBone · 14/03/2023 22:14

So is mine as an NHS doctor... However the MPs have decided to overrule the reccomendation for the last 15 years...

Hence the strikes.

You should challenge your pay rise percentage. But the jobs are not comparable so not sure why you expect salary rise to be aligned from two different sectors. You would take the additional rise if given, then why object to pay rise in a sector you don't work in?

I'd have thought that was obvious - the Govt claim wage rises are driving inflation
(Rubbish as high inflation came first)
Yet have voted in a £2000 per year pay rise for themselves.

Parliament is riddled with millionaires because getting into Govt is a guaranteed way to become extremely rich & if you paid MPs £500k p.a, it would still be the same
.
Few enter Parliament for "public service" reasons, its all about self gratification, just look at their expenses and BTL property portfollio's?

underneaththeash · 14/03/2023 22:21

They should be getting way more, they’re woefully underpaid compared to politicians in every other European countries.

@biggreenhouse the issue we have here is they shouldn't be getting more then the front line workers. People who were actually in the frontline.

Some people will agree with me and some won't.

There getting 2.6% which is a lot lower than most also over 1/2 there salary will be taxed at the higher rate
