Captain Tom Foundation spent more on costs than causes

This is a disappointing read.

"More than £240,000 of the registered charity’s expenditure went on the costs, while four grants totalling £160,000 were paid out to good causes. Of the foundation’s costs, £125,000, almost one-tenth of its income, went on fundraising consultancy fees, including to a firm run by Captain Tom’s daughter."

Was reading recently about the Ladbaby pillock being given a Greggs Black card - which basically entitles you to free food. Despite having been the 'face' of a charity single raising money for foodbanks. Clearly didn't see any disconnect there at all - getting free food (despite being well off) whilst asking the public to donate money for people who can't actually afford food!

The lack of self awareness among these people is staggering.

There's a lot of people feathering their own nests on the back of charity work. Like when all these celebs go to 3rd world countries to 'visit the poor' having flown there 1st class, staying in luxury in a suite in the country's best hotel, full security detail etc, all on the charity coin. After those expenses are all paid for, how much value do they really add, it can't be much!

Sorry for the DM link,I read this extract last year, it was pretty clear at the time that his daughter although a PR professional, fell for her own spin in regards to hero worshiping her father and thought the family would always have the press on their side, if she thought that this extract was in any way good for her father’s brand.

With a tame press, the management fees would easily be spun by the tabloids as fair compensation for a hardworking devastated family and anyone suggesting otherwise would be shouted down as heartless and unpatriotic for besmirching our nations hero whilst his family and country are still in mourning. I can imagine the tear soaked interviews with daytime tv now with the dignified but outraged daughter .

Unfortunately for her, The Conservative party and it’s tame press require as many fallen idols as possible , so that the British public can be led to believe that no one behaved well at that time rather than single out Boris and friends. The quicker the public use the phrase ‘ they’re all as bad as each other’ the quicker it can be glossed over like the rest of the past 10 years and the country can carry on in its apathy.

Yes, spot on.

I'll tell you some thing even more scandalous

The money that was given to our ambulance trust was "spent" buying boxes of snacks from Tesco as a "cheer up" to us over Christmas while we were at surge black and really struggling.

All junk food. All from Tesco. What a farce.

Recycledblonde · 10/02/2022 11:50

We got 'hampers' which consisted of 2 packets of sweets, 2 packets of candied nuts and 2 hideously sweet cereal bars. No doubt they cost a bloody fortune but were covid safe blah blah blah. As were our laminated xmas decs as christmas trees spread covid apparently.

Recycledblonde · 10/02/2022 11:52

Another trust go an extra days holiday each year for the next three years, much more appreciated and appropriate I'm sure.

WouldIBeATwat · 10/02/2022 12:16

There’s a financial cost to time off which a charitable donation may cover.

Joystir59 · 10/02/2022 12:26

From the very start I loathed the idea that the NHS required an old man to push a trolley round his garden to raise money for it. The whole fucking thing, the clapping, people knitting and sewing PPE and Old Tom pushing his fucking trolley made me want to puke.

Toanewstart23 · 10/02/2022 12:28

The money didn’t go to the NHS!!!

It went to NHS charities (go on the website… it went to royal British legion and some hospices)

That sounds much better than some of the other examples. Enjoy your days.

I wish it was our trust, much better use of charitable monies than tooth rotting sweets and the pointless coin that we got.

Every NHS Trust charity signed up got money.
Toanewstart23 · 10/02/2022 14:23

The initial fundraising went to trusts

The foundation…

* The Captain Tom Foundation was set up after this and in addition to our four charity partners, in spring 2021, as lockdown restrictions began to lift, we focused our work through the Captain Tom 100 campaign on mental health.*

The 4 partners being Mind, RBLegion and 2 (wonderful) hospices

Toanewstart23 · 10/02/2022 14:23

No donations to any nhs trusts from the foundation at all

withoutawordofalie · 10/02/2022 18:43

My daughter told me about his daughters companies involvement at the time and I didnt believe her. I thought that it was just gossip on social media. I wish I had taken notice of her now as I would not have donated a penny.

It was all very unpleasant.
Draytoncb · 10/02/2022 19:03

I have worked for many charities over the past 50 years. Increasingly “professionals” have got involved…and paid themselves well. But this stinks.

oakleaffy · 10/02/2022 19:05

I wish id not donated either now i know this.
His daughter allegedly milking the funds to make her family richer seems morally wrong.

Loads of money clearly to be made out of charity.

Thats awful. Who is living high on the hog ? His daughter?

That's diabolical. What an utter, farcical waster of money- Plus a daft coin? Sheesh.
HelloFrostyMorning · 10/02/2022 19:11

Oh dear. Shock

CorrBlimeyGG · 10/02/2022 19:18

I have worked for many charities over the past 50 years. Increasingly “professionals” have got involved…and paid themselves well. But this stinks.

I volunteered for a baby loss charity that was, apparently, completely volunteer run. The founder of the charity has very much made herself the face of it, and looking at their accounts, she (her limited company) invoices them over £60,000 a year for 'events management'. I wouldn't mind so much if there were not people working full time hours for nothing.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/02/2022 19:38

Have I understood this correctly, then: CT raised money from donations towards the NHS/NHS-related charities that was then in fact spent on buying commemorative coins of him to give out to NHS workers? Wow. I can't believe for a moment that he himself would have planned or wanted that, but talk about the serpent eating its own tail....

Each trust spent the money on its own thing.
User1isnotavailable · 10/02/2022 19:58

Oh dear. Sounds like the McCann's with the way they used expenses on their fundraising. Does this type of thing bring out the greed in family members as in how they can make extra money for themselves from it.

WorstXmasEver · 10/02/2022 20:30

Seems corrupt really but I bet the vast majority of charities are the same way.

Charity bosses make fortunes while counting on volunteers to help out in shops etc.

Charities aren't really about charities, they're just businesses with different funding models.
