Saw on the news yesterday that some woman objected to wounded soldiers using the local pool.
here

we get it when we take disabled kids to a pool too.

i cannot believe that to be true...surely not?

NAB3littlemonkeys · 25/11/2007 19:08

They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 25/11/2007 19:09

The women who complained, that is.

neverfree · 25/11/2007 19:09

Well it was in the Mail but having seen how some people behave when you take a disabled child somewhere I must say I'm not suprised.
I was asked to leave TumbleTots cos dd has cerebral palsy. The other mothers found it 'too upsetting.'
ahem

A couple I knew at university were thrown out of a pub for some mild snogging -- because they both had disabilities, and apparently the clientele didn't like to think of people with disabilities as being sexually active.

i was embarresed to see that this was the local pool i used as a youngster. neverfree that is awful. we have been ok when taking dd(cp) but i normally have ds and one of his mates with me,

paulaplumpbottom · 25/11/2007 20:13

What is wrong with these people? These men should be treated as heros not lepers. That discust me

southeastastra · 25/11/2007 20:15

it's depressing. hopefully they're ashamed of themselves

Marina · 25/11/2007 20:20

Isn't that quite close to where locals objected to an accommodation house for relatives of seriously injured servicemen needing to stay medium-term near the hospital? That was commuter-belt Surrey too. Although from what people are saying on here, this sort of offensive prejudice is everywhere. Shame on those women

wheresthehamster · 25/11/2007 20:24

It's the same place.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 25/11/2007 20:25

I saw this in the paper yesterday (in... ahem... my friends Daily Mail, not mine } and was utterly appalled. Everytime I hear about narrow minded, selfish biggots, I can't believe there are people still like it around.

Marina · 25/11/2007 20:25

Oh surely not Really? What is wrong with them?

southeastastra · 25/11/2007 20:39

i wish they'd come out and tell their story.

DrSpeckschwarteSurprise · 25/11/2007 20:49

There was a story about this in the papers recently. The armed forces charity wanted to buy a house near the rehab centre and had to go to court to get past the protest of the NINBYish neighbours.

The plan was that the visiting families of wounded servicemen would have someplace to stay.

Residents protested that the plan would increase traffic and lower their houseprices.

Thankfully the court ruled in favour of the army charity.

These people should be ashamed of themselves.

FeelingOld · 25/11/2007 21:07

That is disgusting!!

catsmother · 27/11/2007 14:43

What possible difference to these harpies' swim does sharing the pool with anyone else make ?

It's quite astonishing how ignorant, selfish and appalling some people can be. They should be banned from that pool, and any others owned by the same local authority, for life.

oliveoil · 27/11/2007 14:45

The pool should have thrown her out

in her chuffin costume

fgs

moljam · 27/11/2007 14:46

thats horrible.

Bouncingturtle · 27/11/2007 15:00

I never agreed with the Iraq war, but if I saw these women abusing these veterans I would have given them an earful. Disgusting bahaviour. I hope the swimming pool does the right thing and bans these narrow minded, ignorant cows and let these men get some exercise in peace.
This sort of thing makes me so .

EmsMum · 27/11/2007 15:08

The women should have been asked to leave.

What if seeing injured soldiers did scare children? Maybe those soldiers have children themselves who really know about being scared.

Perhaps the leisure centre should make sure it has a notice on the entrance to the changing rooms and mark up their timetables so that the squeamish can avoid sessions they don't care for.

krang · 27/11/2007 19:23

When I take DS swimming we sometimes see old, obviously ill, injured or disabled people using our local pool and I am glad to see it: swimming pools are there for everybody to use and enjoy. I have never seen any children in there being 'scared' - what a load of rubbish. Kids can handle differences, they don't care. It's the adults who have the problem. Disgusting.

(By the way, neverfree, I also think your Tumble Tots experience is vile, especially as in their literature they say they welcome kids with special needs. If you were in my group I would have left in disgust that you were being forced out and made a huge stink about it. Hope you complained.)

phdlifeneedsanewlife · 27/11/2007 19:29

I think the pool should have turned round and given those soldiers - and anyone else complained about, ffs! - free passes for life.

agree with krang about tumbletots - am APPALLED.

MicrowaveOnly · 27/11/2007 19:41

That's near me ..the really sad thing is that the swimming pool workers did not throw out the woman and instead the soldiers left. They must have been so upset.
P.S lots of verrry nice houses near where they wanted to build their place for the soldiers. Unbelievable really.

Eliza2 · 27/11/2007 20:17

I feel so ashamed. What kind of values do we have in this country?
