I just read it on the BBBC website - sorry, no good at links.

What message does this send to people, if possessing child pornography is viewed as so minor an offence?

I am very angry about this.

Google references don't necessarily give the true picture thou Elizabetth, do they?

morningpaper · 15/11/2007 12:23

What will happen Winky is that he will never be able to leave his house ever again because if he does he will have the crap beaten out of him by an angry mob, and he will either go mad or kill himself, I'd imagine.

NoNameToday · 15/11/2007 12:25

Chris Langham may be the most perverted man in history, he may also be a very sad traumatised man.

What makes a person download pornography of whatever form?

My posts were to illustrate that I don't know what type of man he is, not to excuse him.

The media will always make the worst of a situation in an endeavour to promote their sales, sometimes issuing rather samll apologies after the event for ruining someones life.

HomeintheSun · 15/11/2007 12:27

It is "Normal" for people who have been caught for offences like this to try and justify why the pics are there or how they got there, they do it to get their rocks off and some progress to making their own pics others are happy just to look at what someone else has taken, usualy a person who just downloads will not thing of themselves as a paedophile because they are just looking and not taking part. As for them getting help or a "Cure" there is no cure once a sex offender always a sex offender.

Elizabetth, how do you know he's pretending he isn't a paedophile?

sorry bad use of language. they are of course images of child abuse. horrific.

mmj - that was his defence, and he claims that experts said he had "no sexual attraction to children"

he'll be on teh sex offenders' register but not sure what level (if any) supervision he'll get

beansprout · 15/11/2007 12:42

I just don't get this. If we are (quite rightly) horrifed by the terrible damage that child abuse does, why is there not a single ounce of compassion for someone who was abused as a child?

At what point do damaged people tip over into just being "evil"? Traumatised people do all manner of strange things to come to terms with what happened to them. It's awful that this could be one of them but the mob mentality on this thread is genuinely frightening.

NoNameToday · 15/11/2007 12:43

Before the advent of the internet I looked at pictures of children who had been subject to abuse.

They were horrific and it was beyond my comprehension that anyone particularly parents/carers could subject anyone, particularly a child to that sort of torture and abuse.

Looking a them didn't make me an offender or likely to offend in that manner.

It was part of my occupation at that time.

As I have said, I do not know Chris Langham so I have no personal interest in him.

Maybe he was trying to come to terms with what happened to him as a child?

Had the poloce not found the images on his PC, and he had put his story in a glossy magazine explaining his history of abuse as a child, would everyone have been so judgemental?

I may be wrong and am happy for others with more knowledge to correct me, but the issue came to light because of someone with lots of menatl health issues making statements which were judged to be untrue.

NoNameToday · 15/11/2007 12:46

And yes beansproutI agree with the mob mentality statement.

Bundle · 15/11/2007 12:49

mob obviously don't help/try to understand what's behind this kind of behaviour. many people who are abused themselves do not go on to offend in this way - have they received support?

Elizabetth · 15/11/2007 12:54

Not being impressed with Langham's protestations that he isn't a paedophile and that he has a clear conscience after downloading images of child rape = "frightening mob mentality"

Elizabetth · 15/11/2007 12:57

Could someone explain to me how you come to terms with being sexually abused as by watching little children being raped?

I mean I've been mugged but I don't want to watch videos of other people being mugged in order to get over it. I'd feel complicit in the crimes against them if I did that. Similarly I've been burgled but really don't want to see videos of people breaking into unsuspecting people's houses and ransacking their property.

NoNameToday · 15/11/2007 12:58

That is you being judgemental Elizabetth, but, you are entitled to hold that opinion.

Doesn't mean that you are any more correct in your assumptions or beliefs than any one else.

NoNameToday · 15/11/2007 13:02

Maybe if you had been sexually abused as a child Elizabetth, your questions may be more valid.

But it isn't the sort of thing many people would admit to in public is it? even hiding behind the anonimity of mumsnet IDs

Perhaps only a sexually abused child has the answers.

I'm sure I would be prepared to kill anyone who sexually abused my child, in fact the urge to punish someone who hurts your child even without sexual connotations is probably the strongest emotions known to parents.

I will mention the Stefan Kisko tragedy again.

goingfriggincrazy · 15/11/2007 13:16

I speak as someone who was sexually abused as a child (aged 3-10).I have also taken the abuser to court so I think I'm qualfied to say I KNOW how it feels..

I don't feel the need to look at child pornography-I have enough flashbacks...I wouldnt be able to bear looking at those children's dead eyes..

goingfriggincrazy, thank you for your honesty and bravery in posting, I appreciate that it is difficult beyond belief to live with that sort of history.

I never made any suggestions that child abusers should not pay the price for their crimes, and I truly hope that the person in your situation did pay, although I realise that their punishment may not necessarily bring you any form of closure.

CodDickinson · 15/11/2007 13:28

can someone sum up please?

donnie · 15/11/2007 13:34

saying that he is ' only' guilty of downloading child porn - does that make him somehow better than the people raping those children? where is the line drawn ? he is not a passive observer.Isn't it curious that he was also charged with other 'contact' offences ( to use a previous poster's term) involving minors? ie the sustained abuse of a young girl? oh yes, not enough evidence. Funny that, just like 98% of rape cases in the UK.

He is downloading child porn - that means he is paying people to rape children so that he can watch it. And he maintains he is ' not a paedophile'.

Go figure.
