Oh I wanted to hear the announcement - doh! That's fab!

bookthief · 09/11/2007 13:16

I think they're planning to hold the bowling events across the road from me. How exciting

Actually I wasn't really bothered until today and then I got inexplicably nervous for them and really wanted Glasgow to win.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 09/11/2007 13:17

OOOO I was going to listen for this but totally forgot - fantastic

turnbacktime · 09/11/2007 13:18

Good good - another something good for British sport - jut going to have to start churning out the fantastic athletes now! (we seem to be good at getting hopefuls but once they start their events, they look rubbish!) Come on Britain - love something liek the Olympics or Commonwealths (or any excuse) to get patriotic!

TheApprentice · 09/11/2007 13:19

Its great news! hopefully we will be able to take ds to something as he will be 7 by then. I was living in Chester when Manchester had Commonwealth Games in 2002 and Dh and I went to the Opening Ceremony (as well as athletics and diving) and it was very exciting!

pooka · 09/11/2007 13:21

How fantastic. Is a wonderful city and am sure will be an excellent host.

Babyramone · 09/11/2007 13:29

Hurray for Glasgow

bookthief · 09/11/2007 13:32

I was one of the (many) children in coloured tracksuits that ran onto the pitch to make patterns at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games in 1982. Was a huge amount of hanging about but we got a free pair of Nike trainers which I remember seeming like a very big deal at the time

EricL · 09/11/2007 13:34

That is fantastic news.

With the national team doing well and two Glasgow footie teams in the Champions Leaugue this is great for the city.

Will totally transform the East end of the city too - well oberdue.

Bowling will be in Kelvingrove Bowls Complex

Habbibu · 09/11/2007 13:42

Oh fantastic! I was so stupid to miss the Manchester games - will NOT miss these!

bookthief · 09/11/2007 13:44

pmsl at bowls "Complex". Otherwise known as the park bowling greens where as students we used to lie pissed at midnight looking at the stars

EricL · 09/11/2007 13:46

Well - it will get tarted up for the games.

Just make sure you don't go stumbling over there in the meantime and piss in the bushes......

bookthief · 09/11/2007 13:47

I will obviously be more respectful of their status in future.

AitchTwoOh · 09/11/2007 13:48

LOLOLOL at 'complex'. they're beautiful greens, though.
how fab and exciting!

do you think there'll be fireworks tonight?

geordiemacminx · 09/11/2007 13:48

Going to cost £280 million, but bring in £80 million of revenue for Glasgow

bobsmum · 09/11/2007 13:49

Aw - Bookthief - do you live near the lecturer's pub formerly known as The (Brewery) Tap?

bookthief · 09/11/2007 13:57

Yes I do bm. It seems to be changing hands, or at least getting redecorated, every 5 minutes at the moment. No idea what it's called just now.

gmm, I know what you mean re: costs but I think the Council are using it as an excuse to spend a lot of money on doing up existing sporting facilities in the city which will benefit us for years to come so I'm pretty pro that.

EricL · 09/11/2007 13:59

Yes - it will cost a lot but the infrastructure it will leave behind will be fantastic.

The East end needs it. I am still embarrassed at the approach to an international sporting complex like Parkhead is so dire and depressing.

It will do wonders for the area.

(And hopefully my house price too eh?)

ChubbyScotsBurd · 09/11/2007 14:00

Glasgow's East End will benefit enormously, I agree. Brilliant city for something like this, not surprised it won. Maybe by then DS will be less limpet-like and we can go to some events!

EricL · 09/11/2007 14:05

Maybe thos dodgy pubs on London road will finally get bulldozed.

Can't see international visitors nipping in there for a swift half...............

MaureenMLove · 09/11/2007 14:12

Congratulations! I drive round Glasgow every year onmy way to Loch Lomond and I can't wait to see the changes every year. I do love a bit of sport! I'm just up the road from some of the Olympics in London and dispite what a lot of people think about it all, I am thrilled to be able to be part of history. I'm sure you're the same. well done again.
