"Going to cost £280 million, but bring in £80 million of revenue for Glasgow"

And how much of it is going to be paid for by the council......and how much by business????

pooka · 09/11/2007 15:24

Used to go often to the Brewery Tap. Happy memories.
Also liked the visga beatha (can't remember the spelling too well - might have something to do with the drink ).

Uisge Bheatha! Had embarrassing experiences of being veerry drunk and unable to open the toilet cubicle door (from the outside) in front of one of my students.

bookthief, my husband failed the audition to be in the opening of the Edinburgh Games!

pooka · 09/11/2007 22:14

I used to love that pub. I lived for a while in Willowbank Terrace so was literally staggering distance home. Also remember having lovely hot toddies when had a cold. Perfect pick me up.
Oh I miss Glasgow

pooka · 09/11/2007 22:17

Were you a lecturer at Glasgow? Being nosy, I know.
I did English Lit/Film & TV there. But a fair while ago.

Habbibu · 09/11/2007 22:26

No, but was a grad teacher (in English Language) while doing my PhD there. Graduated 1st degree in 1995 - when were you there?

pooka · 09/11/2007 22:36

Graduated 1997, so some overlap.
But only as first degree so wouldn't have crossed paths most likely.
Happy days though.

Habbibu · 09/11/2007 22:39

Indeed - sure that's half the reason I did postgrad is that I just didn't want to leave...

bookthief · 09/11/2007 22:41

Ooh Habbibu - I graduated from Glasgow in 1995 (English Literature & Language). It was quite a small department as well but I can't remember anyone's names.

I've only recently stopped having nightmares about leaving my Old English final, going home and discovering I'd completely mistranslated the passage from Beowulf. Was crap at OE and just took a guess. Was about 2 pages out

Habbibu · 09/11/2007 22:46

Old English final? I must have known you!

bookthief · 09/11/2007 22:54

How funny! I really have completely blocked the academic side of my University career though. Spent rather too much time in the Beer Bar with engineers, shamefully (in every way).

Habbibu · 09/11/2007 22:58

Shame on you. I tried to be a QM girl, but was insufficiently cool.

bookthief · 09/11/2007 23:00

Yes, that's part of my GUU shame.

ChubbyScotsBurd · 09/11/2007 23:01

Oh the heady days of the QM ... it was Cheesy Pop on a Friday night when I was there, oh how we drank vodka in frightening volumes then danced with wild-eyed goths [nostalgic sigh]

Habbibu · 09/11/2007 23:05

yes, csb. you were the cool girl I failed to emulate.

Still, I never did join the GUU!

Skribble · 09/11/2007 23:08

Bloddy hell I will be busy that year ,.

ChubbyScotsBurd · 09/11/2007 23:09

Oh gad, I was never cool ... I was a total union whore, went where the cheap drinks took me ... although the rugger buggers in the GU did make my teeth itch a bit ...

pooka · 10/11/2007 08:33

I remember cheesy pop nights at the QM. Fantastic. Bit like a school disco in that big hall.
Also Beer Bar (but not after sport). Ah the smell of the gents {yuck}. Basement Bar and The Hive.

bobsmum · 10/11/2007 23:32

Pooka! I did Film and TV (with geography - weird, but it worked!) at Glasgow and graduated in '98!!

Have we had this conversation before I think?

I loved Cheesy Pop!! With DJ Toast! I lived in the QM - their pizzas at were second to none!

Ah the west end....

pooka · 11/11/2007 10:15

Think we have crossed paths before bobsmum! Oh I remember the pizzas. Trying to remember which topics I did for the final year - which would have possibly have been with your year.
Australia in film & TV. One excellent one with an American reader (can't remember her name which is sad because I really liked her - she looked like Katie Pucrick).

pointydog · 11/11/2007 10:26

hmm. I is sceptical of benefits of big sports events.

I used to go to the Brewery Tap a lot too, on a more interesting note.

ScottishMummy · 11/11/2007 10:28
