Yes, definitely.

I don't dispute the extreme difficulty of the police's job here and do not, in the least, envy those faced with these decisions.

But...

The mistakes made were huge and, more importantly, were judged to be avoidable. Among other things, he was allowed to get on 2 buses when the police thought he was the suicide bomber and not one of the witnesses recalled hearing a warning that indicated that the armed men were police officers.

For some time after the error was known, a false account of the incident continued to be put out by the Met.

An innocent man died. His immigration status does not alter that one little bit despite the views of some to the contrary.

There was a time when, in a case anything like this, the top man would have wasted no time in resigning as a matter of principle.

Ian Blair must, absolutely must, resign without further delay.

No.

yurt1 · 10/11/2007 23:32

A close family member was very good friend's with Harry Stanley (Hackney, table leg guy). The met's record is not good with accidental shootings. I do think he should resign.

southeastastra · 10/11/2007 23:33

fgs he should resign

Spidermama · 10/11/2007 23:36

Yes.

Someone has to be held accountable. It was a monumental fuck up. A completely innocent man died.

Also it concerns me that Sir Ian didn't know that a man had been shot dead until the following morning. How shit is that?

edam · 10/11/2007 23:38

Of course he should bloody well resign. He lied, and then broke the law trying to cover up, and then tried to smear the poor man his officers gunned down, and then tried it all over again! The tactics of the Met in the court case were disgraceful, yet more attempts to blacken the poor man's name.

His defence seemed to be: "I'm the only person in the whole Met who didn't know we'd killed an innocent man." If true, he's an absolute idiot who didn't have a clue what was going on in his own force at the most crucial point in its recent history. Hardly someone who deserves any responsibility, let alone such an important role. If not, he's an appalling liar, and the same conclusion follows.

He obstructed the IPCC investigation, meaning crucial evidence was lost. And the police on the ground were able to tamper with their log books. I wonder what else was carefully hidden from view?

Always a very bad sign when a copper starts to believe they are above the law.

edam · 10/11/2007 23:39

And bananaknicker's post just shows how successful his appalling, lying, smear campaign against poor Jean Charles was...

Spidermama · 10/11/2007 23:39

Very well said Edam.

Why are so many high profile people backing this fool. Jaquie Smith, Mayor Ken, 'Downing Street' etc?

Spidermama · 11/11/2007 00:01

Oh.
Bye then.

yurt1 · 11/11/2007 00:06

yup agree with edam

RosaTransylvania · 11/11/2007 00:34

Yes, he should resign. Where does the buck stop, if not with him?

Spidermama · 11/11/2007 00:37

It's increasinly insulting to the De Menezes family that he refuses to resign.

He was out speaking to press at the Old Bailey within minutes of the jusdgement agasint the force banbging on about what a fantastic job they were all doing to combat the threat of terrorism in London. That stood out as sbeing extrenely insensitive in the circumstances when he should have been concentrating on this case alone. Very defensive.

He should go, of course.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/11/2007 10:17

Yes

edam · 11/11/2007 10:19

Went to bed after posting, thanks for kind words, SM!

edam · 11/11/2007 10:20

And you are dead right about 'incredibly insulting' - he has lost no opportunity to slag off the poor man. I've read columns in the nationals suggesting he's seen as a liberal copper so left-wingers (are there any left?) are supporting him. Strikes me as very odd. And wrong.

edam · 11/11/2007 10:21

Jacqui Smith wasn't too fulsome in her praise, was she, though... smacked of 'I have to say something but don't really want him to hang about or look like a fool if he does go'.

bananaknickers · 12/11/2007 11:39

I have heard some other things damning things about him since regarding other issues.
I agree with you Edam. I am someone who never normally comments on these type of threads.I don't examine news stories and just sort of catch things on the news sometimes.
Watched the Wright stuff on Friday morning and found it an eye opener. Apparently at the last general election he allowed his police cars to display " Vote Labour" on them.

bananaknickers · 12/11/2007 11:44

Think I will stick to my normal threads in future

Upwind · 12/11/2007 12:04

The lies and smearing of de Menezes good name were truly disgraceful and when revealed would probably have forced most people in a position of authority to resign - can you imagine a CEO or football manager behaving in this way and keeping their job?

The man is either extraordinarily incompetent or very deceitful. Either way he seems to think himself above the law.

CAM · 12/11/2007 14:39

I bet he's a mason
