Texas is really, really bloody scary right now

People were struggling with poverty even when things were going well. They've been hard hit by COVID, and now this.

Terrifying.

yup. And they were talking about seccession from the union mere months ago.

TankGirl97 · 19/02/2021 13:49

And their senator has popped off to Mexico on his hols!

It is scary and I feel so sorry for the poor/old/vulnerable population there, there is so little support for them. The images look like something from The Day After Tomorrow.

AntiHop · 19/02/2021 13:50

I had no idea how much poverty there is in Texas. In such a rich country, this is so awful.

Porcupineintherough · 19/02/2021 13:51

They are suffering as a result of the values they uphold. I am really struggling to feel sympathy for them - which probably makes me a terrible human being but there it is.

megletsecond · 19/02/2021 13:53

Cruz is despicable (although I think we knew that anyway). Claiming he went away because his kids were cold.
12yo DD was watching him like Shock.

^^THIS!
Actions have consequencesWink

Over 2 million without power since the weekend, in homes that just aren't built for that kind of weather. It feels like something out of a disaster movie.

The country is rich but most of the people are poor America is wealthy but the wealth is not shared evenly or fairly
SimonJT · 19/02/2021 13:55

Poverty is a huge issue in the US, the storm would have been awful if poverty was a problem in Texas, but this is going to put so many people in a dire situation.

Happytentoes · 19/02/2021 13:56

To be fair @Porcupineintherough they do not all uphold those values.
I lived there for many years. There’s a huge dichotomy in the population; huge swathes of poverty and endemic discrimination. Those will be the first people to be hit by both the pandemic and the current conditions. They have poor housing, but even the best of it was not built for such weather. Many may be ‘off-grid’ or otherwise disenfranchised.
This is common in many southern states in my experience.
My close friends were card carrying democrats, but the big money generally goes Republican.

oil0W0lio · 19/02/2021 13:57

It's shocking to see third world conditions in a first world country, but a wealthy country with high levels of inequality is not a 'rich' country it is a cruel and morally bankrupt country

BestestBrownies · 19/02/2021 13:57

My God that is frightening

Wetalkedaboutthis · 19/02/2021 13:58

That's terrifying, will the government help them out?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 19/02/2021 13:58

I'm sure I wouldn't see eye to eye with a lot of Texans, but being pleased about them starving and freezing to death isn't great either.

They aren't a hive mind - nearly half of them voted for Biden.

The wealthy and Powerful people who made the decisions that led to this situation will skip off to somewhere warm and comfortable

MarshaBradyo · 19/02/2021 14:01

Those empty shelves, poor people

And no power

Viviennemary · 19/02/2021 14:01

I thought it was the rich part of the USA. I've only got watching Dallas to go of. And I can't remember any poor folk on that. Still I'm sure Biden will fix it.

ThePelicansBriefs · 19/02/2021 14:01

I’m in Texas. Yes we had no power for 2 days straight. House was freezing and nowhere to go. No hot water. No means to cook. Freezer food all thrown away. And I did keep thinking, what about the homeless, the elderly, those with small children? It has been hell. We are lucky our power came back on but so much loss for all the community in terms of wasted food and still places with no water. Unbelievable this has happened.

sadpapercourtesan · 19/02/2021 14:02

What @JesusInTheCabbageVan said

It's a terrible situation. I don't understand how anyone can say it serves them right for voting the wrong way. Imagine your children starving, terrified and crying because they're cold. In your own home, and there's nothing you can do about it. Burning their toys to stay warm. It's horrendous Sad

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 19/02/2021 14:02

It's noting that Texas was very close to Democratic this election - it was a toss-up state as was Georgia and Pennsilvania.

It is the ones that should the loudest getting international attention.

It really does. Are the children there Republican? The hyposcrisy of this statement would be surprising if it wasn't so typical of the liberal left.
rawalpindithelabrador · 19/02/2021 14:03

And it will soon be the same here. Like father like son. All their values, they got them from us.

McEwan · 19/02/2021 14:04

I find this quite unfair. Texas is a big state, any many of the people who are suffering will not be the type of people who want to secede, or voted anti-government.

MechantGourmet · 19/02/2021 14:06

This is caused by Texas' isolationism though- they didn't want to be part of a national grid, because other states would take all their power... so you have three grids in the US- east, west, and Texas. Will this catastrophe change their practices?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 19/02/2021 14:07

I really hope things get better for you all soon.

It's the kind of event that would normally get a lot more attention, I think, but at the moment its just being buried under all the COVID news.
