Is fifteen minutes of fame really worth it?

Just read that Charlie from big brother was attacked outside a nightclub by another girl. What with the current media frenzy over Heather Mills, Britney, kerry catona etc do you think the obsession with celebrity is ever going to end?

Not really.

I've just been trying to search for a website that was linked on mn the other day that had a tongue in cheek article that 'Britain runs out of non-famous people' and it couldn't have been truer.

If you stick your head above the parapet you should expect to get it blown off.

Joekate · 01/11/2007 10:02

My son asked me yesterday "would you like to be famous". I can think of nothing worse to be honest. People who court it should be primed for when it goes against them, which it inevitably (sp?) does. I remember Charlie on Big Brother and, imo, she was really gobby and had a go at everyone which begs the question "was this an unprovoked attack?" And I can't help feel that Heather Mills has engineered her media frenzy - she was on GMTV, This Morning, FiveLive and, I think, Good Morning one after the other.

oliveoil · 01/11/2007 10:03

I couldn't think of anything worse than being famous

good god no

paulaplumpbottom · 01/11/2007 10:03

I wouldn't want to be famous either. I like my privacy

LadyHeatherMillsMcCartney · 01/11/2007 10:04
Hmm
Carmenere · 01/11/2007 10:05

So do you think that there is a correlation between the fact that you would have to be thick to want to be famous and the quality of some of our slebs????

RubySlippers · 01/11/2007 10:05

i would personally hate it
TBH being "famous" now seems to be an aspiration and a career for some people
so, no i don't think you will ever have a shortage of people lining up for their chance

I'd hate to be famous.

About seven hundred men would look at me and think ... wasn't that the girl I shagged in 1982?

UnquietDad · 01/11/2007 13:33

Kids DW teaches now have "to be famous" as an aspiration. Some want to "appear on BB". Aspiring to do a skilled job seems to be a minority pursuit.

onebatmother · 01/11/2007 13:38

lol desiderata. 82 was a ... busy.. year for me too.

southeastastra · 01/11/2007 13:40

while crappy publications like ok and heat keep printing their stories, taking their pics and giving them their own column, of course it will still go on.

southeastastra · 01/11/2007 13:41

the majority of the uk public are pretty dumb to buy it it seems

choosyfloosy · 01/11/2007 13:43

same as wanting to be a film star in 1955

at least these days there's much more chance of a 'job' being famous if you actually want it - it must be 1 in every 2000000 instead of 1 in every 20000000

the only kind of fame worth having is the 'reluctant' sort

unfortunately i will never be quite reluctant enough

artichokes · 01/11/2007 13:46

I had 15 seconds of exposure to minor, fleeting fame (to call it 15 mins would be WAAAYYYYYY over doing it). It was horrendous. The intrusion (which was v v minor really) was so scarey. It was also strangely boring at the same time - everyone around you is soooo self obsessed and has a very narrow world view - at the same time your liberty is restricted and you are not master of your own day.

More more more Artichokes!

FlameFromBonfire · 01/11/2007 14:12

Heather Mills has always wanted fame from what I can gather.

Intrigued by Artichoke

Wouldn't want fame either... money - yes, fame - no.

Lazarou · 01/11/2007 14:37

The story about charlie was in heat, along with a story about channelle and ziggy - pair of feckin morons, and victoria beckham saying why did she lie about her spots!!!!
THey obviously are scraping the barrel and I think at some point this whole vacuous world of celebrity is going to implode.

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 01/11/2007 14:56

Now we all have to guess about artichoke.

Contestant on Deal or No Deal?
Winner of Countdown?
Photographed on the arm of bloke from now-defunct boy band?

onebatmother · 01/11/2007 15:00

... Other Woman in political marriage-breakdown? With a ... .. Tory? Involving Chelsea football kit?

Doubletop · 01/11/2007 15:02

A family at my school have just ben the subject of the Jeremy Kyle show .!!

So the desire to be in the media spotlight, for whatever reason, can be very strong for certain types of people.

Rhubarb · 01/11/2007 15:02

Yes, I was mobbed wherever I went.

onebatmother · 01/11/2007 15:02

! (Was it good?)

onebatmother · 01/11/2007 15:03

re Jeremy Kyle
