I think its only part of the problem to say the public get the press they want. Newspapers have a duty too. They have a duty not to print scummy stories and stories that have not one grain of truth in them, whoever they are about - famous or not. Yes people shouldn't buy them if they don't like them, but I think there is still a role for more responsibility on both sides yes.

I think Celeb mags should be banned! They are dangerous, awful and yes addictive. But I completley hate the 'Look whos a skeleton.......Look whos got a miniscule bump and been eating all the pies.......' Its SO DANGEROUS!

There are lots of wider issues here to do with the whole nature of society.

I have no real views on HMM - I think shes got a point here. I'll go as far as to say she can be, er, a bit annoying!

spokette · 01/11/2007 09:41

This is the same woman that invited the press and other media to watch as she stalked J-Lo for having the temerity to exercise her free will and wear fur. Whether you agree with it or not, wearing fur is not illegal and Saint Mills is a bullying, sanctimonious, supercilious, duplicitous, mendacious hypocrite. Particularly as she herself was dishonest and veracious when she assumed another journalist's identity as her own.

niceglasses · 01/11/2007 09:45

Yeah, well that sounds mad, granted. And she is annoying, granted. I just still think she has a point. Maybe shes not the best person to make it tho!!

Monkeytrousers · 01/11/2007 20:04

This is just what I mean by justificationb of bullying, so she's different, that still does not make her a legitimate target for bullying, not if you are against bullying full stop, as most parents are.

This is the double standard that we set for our kids though; don't be nasty, oh er, except if it's her.

I'm not saying anything about her personality, of defending her even, but the principle that bullying is out of order, where ever it occurs - and especially when it occurs so publically.

I (and we) only know Mills via what has been said about her via the media, and most of that has been admitted to be lies, yet people don;t seem to care about that fact; that we have been lied to.

As for the press, they self regulate; this was a privledge given to them by the government but with it came a duty to be responsible, which clearly, just by picking one up and reading about these (mostly female) people being villified on the basis of spite and bad will.

I hope this petition heps force a review of the self regulation of the press, becasue that isn't working.

her sister was quite good on the radio today. she has a point.

Peachy · 01/11/2007 20:20

Ic an't say I have opinion on HMMc to be honest, i've heard some rpetty awful stories about paul Mccartney recently re wife beating and if we choose to dismiss those then we have to agree to do the same for the other half- either the press is accurate or it isn't! besides, I firmlybelieve that the only people that know ewhat happens in a marriage is the couple- everyone else is getting a one sided version.

If you don't like a lot of what the papers print (and I don't) change your paper!. Its the only thing that will make any difference in a market driven world. But dh's employers get ten freebie sun /mirror type papers taken (free peper to staff- they ahev NI and a few other contracts) for every copy of The Times, because sadly people WANT the gossip.

MrsSeanSlater · 01/11/2007 21:20

The Sun and the Mirror are not the same.

Peachy · 02/11/2007 12:15

clearly I ama ware of that, but are part of the selection of papers they have abvailable to them each day as they handle several newspeper contracts rather than exclusively NI. Indeed, the only paper we cannot get regularly is the iNdiw- sdly as my general apper of choice! typical huh?

krang · 02/11/2007 13:41

Here's an idea: if you don't like salacious stories about celebs or people like the McCanns, don't buy the newspapers and magazines that print them...oh, and don't gossip about them endlessly on websites like this one, because you are part of the media now...

Monkeytrousers · 02/11/2007 16:59

I don't buy them.

And tere is a big difference between gossip, which isn't untrue and can be to a persons benefit, or malicious gossip that is untrue and is only spread to harm that person.

spokette · 04/11/2007 07:55

"And tere is a big difference between gossip, which isn't untrue and can be to a persons benefit, or malicious gossip that is untrue and is only spread to harm that person. "

You mean like Saint Mills's current rant against Stella McCartney? So much for her quest for responsible and even-handed journalism.

Monkeytrousers · 04/11/2007 09:52

Where are you getting you info from?

I don't know what you are on about, I don't read the tabloids, heat or other gossip mags.

And i don't know what you are trying to justify? Bullying?

spokette · 05/11/2007 08:51

I don't read or buy tabloids or gossip mags either. In fact, the last three magazines I bought were New Scientist, Runners World and Sky at Night.

I do however, watch the news on BBC and listen to R4. Saint Mills is doing the rounds on US TV slagging of the MCCartney clan so there goes your assume theory that it is only the tabloids reporting on The Saintly One. It appears that she can't keep away from the media.
