I'm so sad at this news. To the sad spotty geeky dinosaur-teen, his radio programme (10-midnight, Mon-Thurs) of the late seventies/early eighties was like a telegram from another world, convincing me that I wasn't completely alone and that somewhere out there were other people who liked what I liked... For years my brother and I used to take it in turns at Crimbo to stay in and record Peely's Festive Fifty...he's been one of the greatest influences on my life imaginable, one of the people without whom I wouldn't be the person I am today. Rest in peace, John. And thanks.

there a tribute programme on radio 4 tonight - not sure about the time.

Oh dino- you've made me cry. Was feeling wobbly already admittedly, after hearing him say how lucky he was on R4pm. He was such a darling.

dinosaur you've started me off now

here are some other tributes

zubb · 26/10/2004 17:32

I think I still have some tapes of the festive fifty in the loft.
Strange how some songs that he played stay with you forever, whether you liked them or not, I will never be able to forget 'lets take the skinheads bowling' by camper van beethoven. Which other DJ would ever have played that? although it is arguable that they would have been right.

Very shocked and sad.

That's really sad - DH will be sad too; he loves listening to Home Truths

nasa · 26/10/2004 17:45

and I loved the way he played a record and then played it again straight afterwards if he really liked it. Teenage Kicks was always his favourite song and he's said previously that he wanted it played at his funeral

I'm completely shocked. Gutted, actually. What sad, sad news.

Zubb - love that Camper van Beethoven song! And as you say, would probably never have heard it if not for JP. All my Festive Fifty tapes are in my car - it's the only tape deck I have and I couldn't bear to get rid of them - and definitely not now.

Can't read all of this but very shocked! and Sheila survived cancer a few years ago. Can't bear Home Truths but no question JP a true original who championed Punk and really loved music.

There's a tribute on Front Row (Radio 4) right now.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who cried (I'd assumed it was pg hormones!)

it is sad. but (nervous cough) would really love to know why this was the top story on radio 4's 6 o'clock news

God just seen this! What a shock. He was such a nice, genuine bloke. Have to go away and think about this now.

Tinker · 26/10/2004 19:41

Yes, it was the top story on Channel Four news - did wonder whether it really should have been

Ikwym, bakedpotato and tinker. I reckon it was because other broadcasters loved and respected him so much that they got a bit carried away. Understandable, though I think he would have {blush]ed somewhat. Or maybe they were responding to the public interest- Eddie Mair said that the level of emails/calls they were getting at the beeb was pretty much unprecedented. JP was obviously very widely loved. I enjoyed hearing Teenage Kicks on R4 too, bundle.

did you notice the dig at the end about R1 putting his show on later & later and him saying to andy kershaw that it was killing him?

Report
Tinker · 26/10/2004 20:24

Yes, noticed that. Very pointed.

Had to explain to my little girl that Teenage Kicks isn't, in fact, a Busted song

ScummyMummy · 26/10/2004 20:30

I expect AK is v upset and looking for someone to blame. JP definitely struck me as having a melancholy/depressive side to him sometimes and it may have just been a figure of speech.

Tinks- eek! I bet Busted wasn't one of JP's favourite bands.

I would also guess that most people in charge of news programming at the Beeb are "our" age - mid thirties to mid forties - and like all of us, grew up listening to John Peel, often under the bedclothes with the lights out. Dh and I are both miserable about it and that lovely post from LunarSea was the final straw!
He'll be so badly missed. Teenage Kicks has always been a fave of mine (love the Undertones full stop) but I'll always well up when I hear it now.
Glad in a very bittersweet way that although he was a long way from home Sheila was with him. My first thought when I heard he had died abroad was for her and the kids and how far apart they would have been.
We have a William too and he is showing steady signs of also being a "Slacker's Slacker".

agree marina about the r4 psyche, and he was regarded as one of our own, probably their biggest sure-fire name. i suspect R3 and jonathan ross will get even more refugees now on a saturday morning.
