Oh Tc, I know. He is a real loss. I hope his family will get lots of support- he loved them all so much.

zubb · 26/10/2004 14:34

so much of the music that I loved as a teenager was due to him, feel so sad
Just said on the radio that he had a heart attack.

BadHair · 26/10/2004 14:37

Oh my god I can't believe this. I'm reading this at work and Im actually crying.

Oh no.

What a lovely man he was. My xp is in a band and JP really used to support them and play them all the time. He really helped them on their way.

This is such a sad loss. And no more Home Truths!

Miriam2 · 26/10/2004 14:50

I really felt I got to know something about him through Home Truths- he obviously had a strong marriage and loved his kids to bits. Can't believe he's gone...65 is nothing these days.
Spent many a lonely student night listening to his voice in the dark

monkeygirl · 26/10/2004 14:52

I feel like a family member has died . I can't believe it, he was still young really.

LunarSea · 26/10/2004 14:56

Very sad. He lived quite near to my parents, and only the other day I was reading this about him - the last couple of paragraphs are especially poignant in the light of this news.

bundle · 26/10/2004 14:59

lunarsea, that's lovely, thank you for posting it

Gingerbear · 26/10/2004 15:05

He was ageless, an inspiration to generations of music lovers, a wicked dry humourous man.

I will miss him.

WideWebWitch · 26/10/2004 15:21

lunarsea, that made me cry. thanks for posting it.

JoolsToo · 26/10/2004 15:25

he was a great 'Grumpy Old Man' - only 65 too -

lyndap · 26/10/2004 15:28

The man was a legend. That voice and his deadpan delivery gor me through revision for SOOOOOOOO many exams.
Feel so sad - like part of my formative teenage years has just disappeared.
Also so sad for his lovely wife and kids.
Plan to look out some vinyl and have a big drink in Mr Peel's memory when I get home tonight.

nasa · 26/10/2004 15:36

Utterly gobsmacked at the news. There just isn?t anyone else who crossed over all different musical genres and can broadcast on Radio 1 and Radio 4 with equal panash and credibility. A true loss to broadcasting. Poor SHelia

Its' so shit when good people die isn't it? They played and excerpt on teh radio just now where he was saying lovely things about his life, just how it had been perfect really

cupcakes · 26/10/2004 15:44

Couldn't believe this when I read the title of the thread - am so shocked and am in tears.

winnie1 · 26/10/2004 15:44

I feel very shocked by this news. It is really sad... a man who really did touch so many lives... terribly sad.

stickynote · 26/10/2004 15:55

This is such sad news and to die so far from the home he so obviously loved is just awful .

stickynote · 26/10/2004 15:59

They're playing Teenage Kicks on Radio 5 now and I'm covered in goosebumps.

JuniperDewdrop · 26/10/2004 16:20

Awwww i didn't know that

emsiewill · 26/10/2004 16:23

I felt a bit silly feeling so upset when I heard this news. It seems that he really was loved by so many people.

I remember him on TOTP in the 80's (someone was talking about this on R5) - his deadpan delivery spoke volumes about his feelings for the groups he had to introduce.

A really sad loss.

JuniperDewdrop · 26/10/2004 16:25

Thanks lunarsea, I'm crying now too

marthamoo · 26/10/2004 16:35

I am really shocked - he was such an institution, I thought he would go on for ever I read his column in the Radio Times for years - he seemed like a genuinely lovely bloke, and a real family man - really loving and so proud of his kids. I remember when his wife had her brain haemorrhage he wrote so honestly about it in his column - his fear that he had been going to lose her; they really came across as true soul mates. 65 seems no age at all - he always seemed ageless. I'm really, really sad
