How will you vote if there is a general election?

Just being nosey... Don't answer if you don't want to. From some of the comments that I have read on threads it seems that even the vomit-inducing BNP are more popular than the tories.

Me first, I will probably not vote. Live in a tory stronghold and it just doesn't seem worth it.

Lib Dem. Married too one. [hmmm] It rubs off on you. I even believe in them these days. We have a Lib Dem MP by the narrowest of margins. We'll be out there campaigning an'all.

Tinker · 02/10/2007 19:22

It would be Lib Dem here. Live in a tory/Lib Dem marginal now. Actually, don't think it's that marginal any more, I'm pleased to say.

Callisto · 02/10/2007 19:25

Well I'll be brave. I'm going to vote Tory because no matter what policies they come up with they'll be better than Labour.

Desiderata · 02/10/2007 19:26

Tory

flowerybeanbag · 02/10/2007 19:26

I'll trot down to the village hall and make a big cross in one of the boxes.

(sorry couldn't resist!)

Carmenere · 02/10/2007 19:27

Lib Dem, they make the most sense to me. I'm just sorry that Charles Kennedy isn't at the forefront anymore.

SueBarooeeooeeooooo · 02/10/2007 19:46

I think I'll spoil my ballot paper. Although the temptation to cause mischeif and knock out a member of the cabinet in a swing seat is rather alluring from an anarchist perspective.

ShaunOfTheThread · 02/10/2007 19:48

Spoilt ballot paper too for me. Can't vote Labour since Iraq, and Lib Dems don't look like an inspiring fallback option atm.

claricebeansmum · 02/10/2007 19:49

Green

ahundredtimes · 02/10/2007 19:52

Why do people spoil ballot papers? It always seems such a stupid thing to do. I don't get it. It's petulant.

I mean I understand why people do it in places where there's a fake election, and you've only got one guy to chose, but here?

Your lucky to have a vote, you should use it towards which ever party you think best represents your interests and sympathies.

claricebeansmum · 02/10/2007 19:53

Can I start my "moral duty to vote...women died getting you the vote" rant now???

ahundredtimes · 02/10/2007 19:54

Oh yes please. I shall hand round refreshments at half time and take names.

Tortington · 02/10/2007 19:54

if there is no party that represents your interests and sympathies i think it says much that you can be arsed going to spoil the ballot and by that gesture say "your all tossers"

rather than stay at home and say " they are all tossers - becuase that is just lazy toss speak.

hunkermunker · 02/10/2007 19:55

I think I'm going to vote Tory for the first time ever.

hunkermunker · 02/10/2007 19:56

And agree, Custy - that's exactly why people spoil ballot papers, imo. Says a LOT, I think.

dinny · 02/10/2007 19:57

God knows - definitely not Labour though.

Hunker - you back yet?

niceglasses · 02/10/2007 19:57

Labour.

Here I stand, I can do no other

ahundredtimes · 02/10/2007 19:58

Well I think its lazy toss to go and spoil a ballot paper and say, oh there are no parties I can vote for because I'm so horribly unrepresented because what I really want is . . .

what?

What party do they want on the ballot paper that isn't there?

You usually have left, centre left, centre, centre right, right and a couple of jolly loons. That's the spectrum isn't it?

ShaunOfTheThread · 02/10/2007 19:58

We've got a duty to participate in the elcection -- i.e. not to just ignore it and stay at home. But that doesn't translate into a duty to support one of the candidates even if they are all vile.

Best thing would be to have an official 'abstain' box to put your cross in. But in the absece of that, spoiling the paper makes some impact - at least the spoilt papers get counted, so can indicate levels of discontent. (Not very accurately admittedly since the numbers also include those who don't know how to fill in the form properly.

SenoraPostrophe · 02/10/2007 19:58

I don't know, I'd have to look at the candidates. Possibly lib dem, possibly labour, possibly green. not tory.

DrNortherner · 02/10/2007 19:59

Labour

My absolute pet hate is folk who do not vote in general elections. Grr.

Carmenere · 02/10/2007 19:59

Yes it says something but achieves nothing. Vote for a party so at least there is a vague chance of your input affecting the future of the country. And if you hate the politics that much join a party so you can at least have a good try at changing things to how you want them

wordgirl · 02/10/2007 20:00

Tories say they will scrap national identity cards so am sorely tempted...

SueBarooeeooeeooooo · 02/10/2007 20:00

I would spoil my ballot paper because I cannot in good conscience vote for any of the 'options', and lots of men and women died so that I would be free to at least make the effort to freely go to a ballot box and spoil the paper. I can't register a 'none-of-the-above', sadly.

DrNortherner · 02/10/2007 20:01

Agree with Carmenere there are ample opportunities around in local politics if you want to make a difference.
