Madeleine McCann

Instead of starting lots of new posts about Madeleine, could I politely request that anyone who wants to post on the subject please post on this one thread? (N.B. Duplicate threads may be flamed hysterically.)

Please note that this thread is not to criticise Madeleine's parents or family, as this is not in the spirit of Mumsnet.

Please can I take the liberty to quote from this article:

"This is the real life of Kate and Gerry McCann, and it must now have become a place of agony beyond all understanding. Pity them, if you have any compassion at all, and demonstrate the minimum of grace: the ability to desist from judgment."

OP posts:
wannaBe · 12/09/2007 21:03

the quotations around "doctors" was more to demonstrate that the media had constantly referred to them as "doctors Gerry and Kate Mccann".

No i have no problem with them being middle class but I do genuinely think that the fact they are has made a difference to how this case had been reported. If a single parent on benefits had gone to the pub and her child had been abducted I genuinely believe that the media response would have been totally different.

And I think the media insist on keep telling us that "doctors Gerry and Kate Mccann" returned to their "£600000 house" because they feel the need to reiterate that they are middle class.

toomuchtodo · 12/09/2007 21:04

agree fabby

but like jooley there will be lots of poeple who don't feel like this

SpeccieSeccie · 12/09/2007 21:04

I can't believe that anyone would suggest that the McCann's should sell their house. Nevermind the total upset and chaos that is their world at the moment but those poor twins should be kept as stable as possible. A house move is a seriously inappropriate idea.

welshdeb · 12/09/2007 21:06

uh no
But image you are facing criminal charges in a foreign country I would expect you would want the best. Puts a Barrister who could keep a dictator with hundreds of peoples blood on his hand away from justice top of the short list.

Blu · 12/09/2007 21:06

Wannabe - and because the media like to pad out thin stories with little real content (like actual evidence) with details of anything they do know.

Blu, 23 year-old blonde optician.

WideWebWitch · 12/09/2007 21:07

Fabby, that is not a FACT that is your OPINION.

Suggest you look up the difference between the two, it will change your life.

jooleybee · 12/09/2007 21:07

yes I know fabby but, we all do things that we are not supposed to I am sure at sometime in our life (bit out of date with threads) and they are paying for it arent they?. However......

fabbylucesmum · 12/09/2007 21:08

It would the equivalent of me and dh going out to our local pub and nipping back regularly. Although I would not consider the possibility of our dd being abducted (she is 2) I would worry alot that she may wake, fall out of bed and would naturally want the comfort of her mummy or daddy. This would be enoogh to make me not do what the McCanns did.

toomuchtodo · 12/09/2007 21:08

wannabe, of course they have been treated differently, thats obvious

oliveoil · 12/09/2007 21:09

well

if I had more than £2.37 in my purse, I would donate to their legal fund

welshdeb · 12/09/2007 21:10

Wiked water witch for information from the NSPCC on leaving children alone look at my post on 19.58
I think I would defer my opinion to a respected children's charity, but hey thats just me.....

oliveoil · 12/09/2007 21:11

and I couldn't give two craps what class they are or how much their house is

I look at that womans face and it is horrific

whether they left their children or not

show some compassion

toomuchtodo · 12/09/2007 21:11

I would donate it to "save the children"

anyway hope against hope they are completely innocent, I'm beginning to have my doubts now

its a really strange case and very very tragic

jooleybee · 12/09/2007 21:11

EXACTLY that is what I have always said. I would be more worried about a fire starting or child getting up and falling over/being scared or falling over etc etc than actually being taken etc etc .....

beansprout · 12/09/2007 21:12

What Olive said.

welshdeb · 12/09/2007 21:13

Olive oil what about some compassion for Madelaine. She is a child.
2 responsible adults left her alone and she disappeared. Whther you feel sorry for them or not they are responsible.

Madelaine is the real victim in all this.

ScoobyDooooo · 12/09/2007 21:13

About the "new fund" it was actually stated by there madleine funder in a statement, that many people have been phoning wanting to offer finacial help with there legal costs, the only way these people can give there money is to set up a "new fund" the Mccann's have not sat & thought i know lets start a new fund to foot our legal bills, people off there own back whoever they may be want to give them money & want to know how they can do so, as i said the only way is to set up this new fund.

oliveoil · 12/09/2007 21:13

righty ho

I stand corrected

lucyellensmum · 12/09/2007 21:13

i do agree with your comment re the single mother wannabe , but thats a sad reflection on the british public.

One would imagine that now of course, because of the allegations, their profession is very relavent, sadly.

For anyone commenting on whether they should have left the child, just FARK OFF, its been done to death, it is neither useful or relevant to get your bloody claws out again.

haychee · 12/09/2007 21:14

blu
The media are crap and sensationalist. They do pad out thin stories with nonsense.

But,

They are everywhere, theyve got their noses into every tiny detail. They are accountable for what they report to a degree. They are open to libel in a big way. Of course they are willing to take the risk of that for a good story to print and therefore sell it well. So my guess is that they do know quite a bit, even if its just hearsay and not posistive fact. They are the best detectives imo, its in their interest to/its their job to investigate crimes/the news/events etc and then report it.

HorribleHorace · 12/09/2007 21:14

for goodness sake welshdeb, just because someone says they feel compassion for the McCanns does not mean they don't feel compassion for Madeleine

jooleybee · 12/09/2007 21:15

Here bloody here!

quint · 12/09/2007 21:15

First of all apologies Wannabe, I got mixed up, I realise it wasn't you. But what do you mean by "doctors".

Welshdeb, of course it is a public forum, but as I said, is there anyone who doesn;t know that they left the children and this was done weeks ago, why bring it up again now? If you read my posts you will also see that I said that I didn;t condone it and wouldn;t do it myself, however the parents have also said they regretted it and they were not the only ones who have done something like this. They obviously felt it safe to leave them, unfortunatley for them it has had terrible consequenses, something that they will have to live with.

Surely that was Phillip Greens decision to donate towards a fighting fund, no body made him do it.

Yes I am also reminded of Lindy Chamberlain (just couldn;t remeber her name) and for those of you who don;t know the name, she too was accused of murdering her child and villified in the press (noone believed her story that a dingo had taken the baby) years later it was shown that she was telling the truth. She also managed to stay composed in her grief, must be where these parents are going wrong.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 12/09/2007 21:16

Welshdeb if you care so much about Madeleine McCann it would be nice if you could be bothered to spell her name correctly.

chonky · 12/09/2007 21:16
