signed pertition recently to 10 Downing Street thought it had all blown over apparently not. This would be the biggest landmark you would see arriving into uk

chocabloc · 09/09/2007 00:00

dont see what the issue is, wacth geitgeist the movie! Would their be an objection to a super chruch, i doubt it ! not evreyone should be tarred with the same brush!! Think this terrorism, muslims are bad nonsense is another moral panic!

TotalChaos · 09/09/2007 00:20

and? could be good for tourism etc.

Carmenere · 09/09/2007 00:24

We have been through this quite a few times on mn before

eleusis · 10/09/2007 10:31

I think one of the key issues is that Tablighi Jamaat is backed by radical Islamists in Saudi. American intelligence believes they recruit young men in Afganistan for training camps in Pakistan.

I don't fully understand the whole story. But, why do we need a monster mosque in East London? I wonder if we could go build a monster Anglican or Catholic Cathedral in the Middle East. I bet that would be popular.

I don't think we shold build catherals in Iran, and I don't think I want a huge mosque in London. (I'm of course happy with the ones that already exist) I just don't see the need for the proposed monstrosity.

ImBarryScott · 10/09/2007 10:32

not been to east london recently the eleusis ?

eleusis · 10/09/2007 10:33

What does that mean?

ImBarryScott · 10/09/2007 10:37

just that your analogy is a bit skewed. there are rather a lot of practising muslims in east london. there are not many practising catholics in tehran.

Blu · 10/09/2007 10:42

Ummm, 'to be built' is a bit ott given that they only have expired permission for their temporary building and planning permission has not yet been granted for any permanent development. If I understand that link correctly.

eleusis · 10/09/2007 11:53

Lots of muslims don't all need to practise in one huge mosque. Am I missing something? Is there some reason smaller mosques are unsutable for muslims?

Yes, Blu, planning permission is far from granted.

I wonder where Red Ken stands on this issue.

minorityrules · 10/09/2007 12:00

We have some beautiful huge cathedrals and churches in this country and now we are getting some beautiful mosques

What is the problem? Are you scared that it will be full of terrorists? The huge majority of muslims in this country abide by the large peaceful aspects of their religion and to have a large place of worship to cater for an area, with large population of muslims is a good idea imo

Would be rolling your eyes if the Church of England wanted to bulid the largest church in the country on the spot?

eleusis · 10/09/2007 12:05

A bit more here for anyone who is interested.

www.cbn.com/CBNnews/83805.aspx

I would be rolling my eyes if the Church of England wanted to build a whopping great Anglican catherdral three times the size of the largest mosque in Iran and place it smack dab in the middle of Tehran.

Tortington · 10/09/2007 12:07

any deffo information as to how it is funded please?

this is my only bugbear.

religeons should not be supported IN ANY WAY by the state.

i say that as a practising catholic.

if i want my kids to go to a catholic school - i should help pay for it

same goes for churches etc

ruddynorah · 10/09/2007 12:07

but why would the anglican church want to do that? you're being daft. that holds no arguement. there are lots of muslims in east london, hence a large mosque is relevant.

minorityrules · 10/09/2007 12:08

Would you still be eye rolling if it was put in a highly populated C of E area of Tehran?

Desiderata · 10/09/2007 12:08

I agree with eleusis.

Tortington · 10/09/2007 12:12

why? desi?

anyone any info on how this huge religious symbol will be funded?

eleusis · 10/09/2007 12:16

Custy my love, google "Tablighi Jamaat".

Oh yes, like Iran would ever permit Christians to practise. No small coincidence that there aren't any in Iran. That's my point. They are an islamic country and they keep it that way. We are a Christian country (Yes we are!!). So why do we need gian mosques that tower over our churches?

Blu · 10/09/2007 12:18

Eleusis - I would be concerned, perhaps, if the CoE wanted to build "a whopping great Anglican catherdral three times the size of St Pauls" in Stratford, East London. In the case of football grounds, I wouldn't want one built in my close neighbourhood, either. I don't se this as some sort of international tit-for-tat as you do. Either a whopping great building attracting huge numbers of like minded people to an area is a good thing, or it isn't. And in this very case it seems to be established small local mosque communities that are protesting.

Planning law will look at the design of the building (hideous, from the scanty computer graphic shown) and it's impact on the area in terms of user numbers and noise etc.

Tortington · 10/09/2007 12:18

nope can't be arsed

lulumama · 10/09/2007 12:19

I have had emails about this for ages, i think it is propoganda

slim22 · 10/09/2007 12:20

here we go again...........................................

Desiderata · 10/09/2007 12:22

And I agree with Custy's point re: funding.

eleusis · 10/09/2007 12:22

In that case, Custy, neither can I.

Blu · 10/09/2007 12:24

"We are a Christian country (Yes we are!!). So why do we need gian mosques that tower over our churches? "

or giant casinos, or sports stadiums, or tourist atractions (like the London Eye) or cultural buildings like Tate modern) all 'towering above churches'...becaue enough people want to visit them.

I am not going to wax lyrical with enthusiasm for Tablighi Jamaat, I don't welcome that sort of influence. But I think the arguments you pose against this proposed mosque are not the most apposite.
