I thought there already were...think a lot of people don't know about the teeth

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 11:57

It's going to make FA difference.

If people want to smoke they will.

charliecat · 29/08/2007 11:59

It MIGHT help when your 14, being able to point at the packet and say....Nah....dont wanna look like that cheers.

southeastastra · 29/08/2007 12:01

they're raising the limit to 18 too, which is a good thing.

zippitippitoes · 29/08/2007 12:07

actually there was a survey on these pics last year linked from mn..i think that's why i remember them

no nothing makes a difference but things have changed...they don't smoke on late night tv cultural programmes any more or on heavy weight political interviews

charliecat · 29/08/2007 12:26

Its harder to ignore the rotten teeth, than the SMOKING KILLS in capital letters, isnt it? Maybe?
Hopefully.
I do think as a teenager it may help to say, No look at what it does, dont fancy that....makes the person with the fag packet look a bit daft hopefully, and more people to back up the one saying No Thanks.

southeastastra · 29/08/2007 12:48

it's too much, if they're that bad they should just ban them. which they won't complete double standards totally patrionising

ntsmum · 29/08/2007 13:00

I think it's a good thing. A visual image has more impact than a slogan. And the more people are reminded of the disgusting realities of smoking, the better imo.

zippitippitoes · 29/08/2007 13:03

i don't really see why it's too much

wine bottles don't have the same sort of graphic images because it is possible to drink sensibly

it's not possible to smoke sensibly

sandcastles · 29/08/2007 13:07

They make NO difference! They do it here in Australia. I don't smoke, but dh does & he said they don't make him want to quit at all.

The pictures are horrible, I won't go into details as I know people probably won't like to read it. Some of them make me feel sick.

I am yet to meet 1 person who has been shocked enough to stop. If they want to stop people smoking then they should stop selling the things. But they wont, too much revenue!

fick · 29/08/2007 13:11

I think it is a fantastic idea. Particularly for those who are hard of reading, or hard of thinking.

OrmIrian · 29/08/2007 13:21

I don't know. Maybe with young people it might help. As you are immortal until you reach about 30 the lung cancer/heart disease threat probably won't get to you, but unsightly throat and mouth cancer and horrible teeth might. As I don't smoke I won't need to look at them and I'll make damn sure DH keeps his tobacco packet well away from me thankyou very much!

zippitippitoes · 29/08/2007 13:22

young children will see them on parents fags and put pressure on the parents and maybe it will slightly affect parents and children at a vulnerable age ..these are educational messages aimed quite a lot at young people before they smoke

UnquietDad · 29/08/2007 13:23

I'm amazed that raising the purchasing age to 18 hasn't been trumpeted more. Let's hope it is enforced too. This government seems to want to bury its sensible initiatives and sign the daft ones from the rooftops.

fick · 29/08/2007 13:29

Unquiet - I think they would prefer to, however, I think they are often tied by the European courts (wrt to human rights issues and other such nonsense).

princessmel · 29/08/2007 13:31

I think its a good idea.

southeastastra · 29/08/2007 13:33

i honestly don't think it will make any difference. more than likey would entice children to buy them more

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 29/08/2007 13:34

why ..what's the logic there?

UnquietDad · 29/08/2007 13:35

Obviously I meant sing the daft ones from the roftops. They may well be signing them as well. With the aid of Pat Keysell and Mr Tumble. But I doubt it.

i just think some children would see the pictures and try them more for a 'dare' you know it's so bad for you it must be good type thing.

UnquietDad · 29/08/2007 13:41

Bloke on Jezza Vine was suggesting kids would collect the nasty pics too! Can you imagine? "I've got two lots of Yellowing Teeth; swap you one for a Coronary Thrombosis. Know anyone who's got Lung Cancer?"

zippitippitoes · 29/08/2007 13:45

i think kids would find them interesting but that is good imo

lou33 · 29/08/2007 13:50

they do it in thailand, makes no odds

LilyLoo · 29/08/2007 13:56

tbh i think all somkers are aware of the health risks and having them on a packet won't make any difference.
I don't smike and think they would bother me more than dp who smokes. However am sure they will just get use to seing them as they do the captions now. Tbh who reads them am sure most smokers have no idea what it says on the packet they currently have!
