here is the link news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/beds/bucks/herts/6960590.stm

Why is there so many people being shot? why are these people even walking around with guns? there seems to have been alot of shootings over the past 2 weeks, what a world we live in.

It says the the man was shot 3 times in the face but is not critical. Sorry for being flippant but what was he shot with - a spud gun!

Yes, scooby, it's not getting worse though. These things have always happened or so I am told by others.

Desiderata · 23/08/2007 16:12

Yes, Scooby, UCM and I are constantly being told that things are all rosy in the garden. Apparently, it's the media that makes us fear violent crime; they're whipping us up into a frenzy.

Particulary the Daily Mail

MerlinsBeard · 23/08/2007 16:14

scooby, i think that there always shootings but because there have been a few high profile ones its considered news worthy to report them now.

doesn't make it right

ImBarryScott · 23/08/2007 16:15

Sorry Desiderata, but there is an element of media frenzy to play in this. As I have posted previously, DH is a detective in the Met. this month 2 of his cases (gun crime) hit the news, one nationally. Last month he had as many serious gun crime cases. none hit the news. I can only assume this is because gun crime is this week's hot topic.

noddyholder · 23/08/2007 16:16

It is getting so scary My ds has been hanging out at a local skate park and although he is sensible and 13 I am worried sick that this awful gun culture is spreading like wild fire and I can't relax til he's home.It is a nightmare and getting worse

i know a man who runs a mediation service that deals with gun/drug/gang crime. He has a couple of kids the same age asm mine - i must watch what he lets his do

UCM · 23/08/2007 16:19

Fio, I was taking the piss . I am constantly being told on here that violent crime is no worse today than it ever was. Like you I don't believe it. I think it's getting nastier and younger perpetrators are committing the crimes.

I remember when I was about 11yrs old (early 90's ) quite a few stories in the local newspaper about people having been shot/stabbed in the local area.......AFAIK only one of them made the national news - these days they'd all of had national media coverage.

redclover79 · 23/08/2007 16:31

Bloody hell, I grew up there! Can't say I'm surprised though, one of the reasons we moved from letchworth was the escalation in violence in recent years... Wouldn't surprise me if this is about drugs, but I would be surprised if it's gang related...

ImBarryScott · 23/08/2007 16:32

My point exactly, QoQ.

southeastastra · 23/08/2007 16:33

i think violent crime is getting alot worse. drugs, gang culture, drive-by shootings. they weren't around 20 years ago.

of course the east end had ronnie and reggie to sort it out.

Tups · 23/08/2007 16:33

2 of my work colleagues live there.
This is just so scary especially as an 11 year old boy was shot dead last night.
what is the world coming to?
sickos

ScoobyDooooo · 23/08/2007 16:34

UCM & fiofio i totally agree with you i really worry about what this world is going to be like when my children grow up, i think it has got worse & worse as the years have gone on.

OP posts:
TheQueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2007 17:10

Southeastra - they WERE around 20yrs ago - I remember clearly in my local paper reading about drug/gang related crimes - I guess most of them didn't make the national news as in those days if they arrested someone quite quickly it wasn't shown - only the ones where they were still looking for someone became big news.

Still shudder at the thought of the man being shot in the head while he slept in bed literally round the corner from our house (and we lived in a quite nice part of town).......don't think they ever did arrest anyone over it !

southeastastra · 23/08/2007 17:13

think the uptake in the availability of drugs now must have something to do with it.

that has definitely grown, cheap cocaine etc.

a kid had got shot in the head and died in Liverpool. Happened last nite ...he was walking on his way home whilst a lad on his bike shot him in the head!!! here

TheQueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2007 20:14

Fio - you're correct I don't currently live in a city....however I'm not talking about where I live now I'm talking about where I used to live

And grime indeed .

I still don't feel "unsafe" in the UK (regardless of whever crime has increased, decreased or gone round in circles )....when 99% of the population have 10ft high fences around their homes, with gates kept padlocked at all times, with bars on the windows (even with new builds) then perhaps I'll start feeling a little more uneasy

TheQueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2007 20:26

mind you it should be noted that all this talk of "young" "teenage" etc........the 6 people arrested of the shooting in Letchworth are apprently in their 20's and 30's. There's no mention of ages on the killers of the 35 year old biker - but they're described as "men" (no mention of "young" or teens etc. The men in this story are by no means "youngsters" either. Again here the accused are not "young"

I'm sure there's more - but my house is a tip - so much so that even I can't bear to look at it!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 23/08/2007 20:37

Gun crime in relation to young people has risen according to this Telegraph report

I agree that there were shootings in the 80's and 90's, obviously there were, but I remember them as being shootings related to armed robbery or terrorist organisations; the IRA for example. Mainly older perpetrators. You didn't have this regular, random killing of and by young people.
