I've always said not knowing is worse than actually being there. I am sitting here with tears coming down my cheeks. Belize and the city of Chetumal (Mexico) are taking the full force of Hurricane Dean at the moment. I am from Belize and lived and worked in one of the towns that is currently being flattened by this storm.

Please pray for all those caught up in this storm The outer islands and the coastline were mostly evacuated but their livelihoods will be flattened.

my family in ambergris caye always evacuate by airplane to Flores in Guatemala.

those on the mainland, move further inland and stay with rellies or batten down the hatches real well.

those who evacuated will not be allowed home till the electricity and sewer pumps are working. things ain't so bad. listening to the news, most homes withstood it in ambergris caye. just between running to look after dd, have not heard much from Corozal yet.

my family in Belize city are fine

oh, the picture on my profile was actually taken at 6 am on February morning from my very own verandah. I lived 30 ft from the Caribbean sea.

IRL, it was an aweinspiring sunrise. the light was actually pink(!) but the camera couldn't pick that up. as you can appreciate, that sea can also be an angry sea.

Flores is lovely. Went there on holiday a few years ago - and visited Tikal, of course!
Glad to hear that everyone should be fine.

That is the thing with Belize - because the coast is East facing you get much nicer sun rises than sun sets ... you have to be up early (or late ) to catch them ... but they are well worth it.

Flores is majical. like the place that forgot sitting there in the middle of the rainforest.
