I've always said not knowing is worse than actually being there. I am sitting here with tears coming down my cheeks. Belize and the city of Chetumal (Mexico) are taking the full force of Hurricane Dean at the moment. I am from Belize and lived and worked in one of the towns that is currently being flattened by this storm.

Please pray for all those caught up in this storm The outer islands and the coastline were mostly evacuated but their livelihoods will be flattened.

comfort yourself in that it's always worse for those watching and waiting than for those experiencing. Hope you hear something positive soon ((((hugs)))

i am here trawling the belizean internet sites. One Belize messageboard i visit has given better picture of things on the ground interspersed with black humour and and ribbing of each other so at least we are getting a smile out of this.

MSNBC has broadcasted a dangerous rumour if not an outright fabrication abuot the city's hurricane refuges being unable to cope with the storm and the hospital shutting down.

try to keep busy kiskidee - and don't forget the news bulletins always slant things to sensationalise it. Thinking of you and yours.

totaleclipse · 21/08/2007 07:55

Oh its so awful, the pictures of the storm from space are shocking, mother nature is raging, I hope the damage is as minimalas we can hope

tigerschick · 21/08/2007 07:57

Oh kiskidee - my parents lived in Belize for 9 years.
I am hoping with all my might that this Hurricane doesn't hit as hard as Mitch did.
Thinking of everyone there - friends and family.

totaleclipse · 21/08/2007 07:57

I agree alot of the news channels will dramatise the story.

kiskidee · 21/08/2007 08:04

you're right. i know i need to drag myself away from this. i keep stopping and starting to cry with the updates. the good/bad thing is listening to the local radio over the net. it keeps me informed but also makes it hard. one caller says the house next to his has already lost its roof and it was sheltering a large family.

dd needs her breakfast and get dressed.

thanks for the hugs and concerns everyone.

Try and keep yourself busy for the next 3 hours, turn the radio off, you sadly cant do anything about it so are only torturing yourself by listening and try not to get upset about roofs coming off etc, its only bricks and water, time will fix any material devestation.

kiskidee · 21/08/2007 09:32

some guy, from the BEEB just had his telephone call broadcast live on local radio.

Boy, he was clueless. I will be curious to see how this will be reported.

sorry, can't tear myself away from the radio at the moment.

Which online radio have you got kiskidee?
My firewall is blocking most of them! But I can get Wave radio out of Belmopan.

kiskidee · 21/08/2007 09:39

Got it. Thanks.

tigerschick · 21/08/2007 16:14

Apparently there was an interview with the CO of the Army base in Ladyville just on Radio2 news.
Any news on your family yet Kiskidee?

kiskidee · 21/08/2007 16:47

no, but my family will be fine. those in the worst areas got to safety and we've been through this kind of thing before. so i know they know what to do. some people i know personally didn't evacuate but the reports have been positive so i am not worried about them anymore.

it is just hard to be away from them in times like this. you want to be there to assist with preparations and reassure them.

tigerschick · 21/08/2007 16:50

I know what you mean. My parents were there with the forces so were lucky enough to be evacuated to Miami once and Houston another time. They were so worried about their Belizean friends. One very good friend of theirs has a house on Cay Caulker - they found her jetty about 6 houses along after Mitch.
Fingers crossed that everyone is OK. Are your family in Orange Walk or are they further north than that?

kiskidee · 21/08/2007 16:59

corozal, ambergris caye and belize city

OP posts:
tigerschick · 21/08/2007 17:02

Ooh - like you say they are in the 'worst areas'. Let us know when you've heard something It's the not knowing and feeling 'out of it' that is the worst bit I think.
Thinking of you - and them.
