Sad
tiredemma · 14/08/2007 13:53

no- dont want to be seen as being wrong- sorry QoQ- what I meant was that she may have gone undetected by local services as she had only recently arrived.

Sorry QoQ- please dont take my comment out of context- that was not what i meant.

sorry

MyTwopenceworth · 14/08/2007 13:56

Africa as a country. Always love that. [irritated]

tiredemma · 14/08/2007 13:57

Oh please come on- I only quoted the news report.

Im really sorry- feel like bloody crap now.

Dropdeadfred · 14/08/2007 14:00

Tiredemma you've done nothing wrong - don't worry.

doggiesayswoof · 14/08/2007 14:03

Agree with OO and thomcat and others - OP please consider thread title in future. I am off now too until this thread goes away. Don't want to keep reading title in active convos

TheQueenOfQuotes · 14/08/2007 14:03

sorry didn't mean to upset you - I just wondered where the "africa" bit came from (not in BBC News report??).

Nbg · 14/08/2007 14:05

oh god thats sickening

tiredemma · 14/08/2007 14:06

no ITV

I would have put in whichever part of the world the report said that they were from- I just wanted to highlight the fact that it was someone who could have just been left with no social support upon arrival in a new country.

sadly this looks like the case.

louii · 14/08/2007 14:06

Well the title of this section is "in the news" and like it or not this sad story is in the news so whats the problem with the op posting it?

Its a fact, toddler was stabbed to death.

Maybe we should all just post happy stories in case we offend anyone.

MyTwopenceworth · 14/08/2007 14:06

Oh, TM, I didn't think it was you, I didn't read the story (if I avoid it I can live in my little bubble and pretend the world is not a shithole, terrible of me, isn't it). I assumed you were quoting from the article.

tiredemma · 14/08/2007 14:07
  • I felt bloody awful for a few minutes then!
TheQueenOfQuotes · 14/08/2007 14:09

I thought the same as MTP.

louii - many people have children who read over their shoulder while they're on teh computer - my DS1 is now at the reading stage where he would be able to read that title - and understand it - and while I do let my children watch the evening news with me - many others don't and would prefer not to have to try and explain to their DC what had happened/how it won't happen to them etc etc.

louii · 14/08/2007 14:13

I would have thought the many thread titles on MN with swearing and sexual references would be more to bother about.

wheresthehamster · 14/08/2007 14:14

agree louii!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 14/08/2007 14:16

Well thats' your opinion - but many would prefer to try and shield their chidlren from the violence that occurs in the world (particularly towards children) until they're older - swearing and sexual references.......well IMO very difficult ot get away from in real life

oliveoil · 14/08/2007 14:16

I am not arsed as my children cannot read

I do not want an image of a toddler being stabbed in my head, thank you very much. Funny that .

but I have said all this time and time again, yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn

hertsnessex · 14/08/2007 14:20

having just been through the loss of a friends baby - at 3wks old - i told my boys about it - as they asked (after hearing me talk about it on the phone) and explained what happened etc. its all part of life. my boys are 2.5 and 3.5. i wont be shielding them from a thing if they ask about it - so the title doesnt offend me - i think its precise and to the point. then you can choose whether to read it or not.

oliveoil · 14/08/2007 14:21

HOW CAN YOU CHOOSE TO READ A THREAD TITLE?

By the time you have 'chosen' you have read it?

TheQueenOfQuotes · 14/08/2007 14:22

herts I don't shield my DS's from this sort of thing either HOWEVER some parents prefer too and that's their choice - some peple don't even watch/read the news and as such would prefer not to have such titles "in their face" while browsing active convo's looking for threads on nappies and childbirth.

MyTwopenceworth · 14/08/2007 14:24

You can swear like a trooper, you can ask for advice on how to best utilise an aubergene in your love play but you cannot mention Unpleasant Events.

I know, it's odd.

I do it at times, avoid reading something I know is going to upset me, it's stupid I know.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 14/08/2007 14:28

sex and swearing both (like it or not) pretty much part of everyday life (even if you don't swear the chances of your children hearing outside is pretty high) and you can't really avoid.

however some people avoid news stories such as these for personal reasons (wide vareity from simply not wanting to be upset, through to knowing someone that it happened to).

Rhubarb · 14/08/2007 14:28

Sigh. I dunno, I was listening to Radio 1 in the car yesterday with dd and they did this huge discussion about condoms and safe sex. They also don't hold back with their news items - I can't switch off quick enough at times.

I knew about this story. The thread title doesn't offend me that much because I'd already heard about it, but I wouldn't click on the link nor would I start a thread like this because I don't see the point in sharing bad news with others. If I wanted to hear bad news I would go on News 24.

However if other people want to discuss the details of this case, well fine by me. Perhaps it helps them come to terms with it?

louii · 14/08/2007 14:28

So do you never read a newspaper, watch the news etc??

I would love to live in a bubble but sadly these awful things happen in society whether we read about it or not.

My son is two and a bit, I have explained to him about relatives dying etc. Bad things happen, I explain things concisely and age appropriately to him, think its pretty important.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 14/08/2007 14:31

Louii - please read my posts carefully - I never said I was talking about me did I???

However I DO know people that don't read newspapers or watch the news - they don't live in a "bubble".

However I do think your point about "age appropriately" is quite important - if I were one of those people that preferred my DS's to hear from me about these events then I would not be telling my 6yr old (who can read) that "a toddler was stabbed to death" - that would NOT be an age approriate way of telling him IMHO.
