Do you think the floods in the South are more newsworthy than the ones in the North?

as Sky and BBC have all decamped and are LIVE 24 hours a day, all in waders and macs

yet Sheffield and Hull didn't get the same coverage

why is this do you think?

"The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Engines stop running and the wheat is growing thin,
A nuclear error, but I have no fear,
'cos LONDON IS DROWNING - AND I - I LIVE BY THE RIVER!!
(ow-ow-ow-owwww-oooo!!!)"

UnquietDad · 25/07/2007 00:22

I don't really live in London.

twentypence · 25/07/2007 05:35

I saw 24 hours of waders and macs in Sheffield when I was over recently (on BBC). But I don't understand what was national and what was regional telly with those 8 million channels you have - so it could have just been very local.

Southern floods are international news though - people keep saying to me - at least it wasn't flooded when you were on your holidays - yes it was, I didn't go to the south, and there wasn't a 24 hour period with no rain.

flightattendant · 25/07/2007 06:12

Realised I have been very complacent simply because we're not flooded. it's only happening to 'other' people.

But for the grace of God...it's appalling and I'm horrified at how much damage there has been.

I think there is a bias toward the south as most of the BBC's employees probably live here...also people generally richer...doesn't make it more newsworthy, of course it doesn't. Just more likely to get coverage (for everyone above Watford)

Ashamed to be a southerner emoticon

Yoohoo from Gloucestershire. I don't know whether the north floods were on telly as much but yes these floods have had solid coverage for 2/3/4 days on both BBC 24 and Sky. I think these floods have caused so much coverage as their is sooo much water 4/5 maybe 6 counties have been affected, God knows how many people couldn't get home on Friday due to the sheer amount of rain that came down. Alot of houses are still waist high with water 4 days after the rainfall and now 98% of Gloucestershire is without running water and we also up until yesterday had a threat of no electric as well.

I'm not saying it's worse as it's worse for anyone who has had their house flooded but it has deffo been a rollercoaster even for me who luckily has not had a flooded house.

Anteater · 26/07/2007 16:49

Spidermama,
daughter due to leave for Hickstead tommorrow.. has it stopped raining yet?

SueBaroo · 26/07/2007 17:05

Well, as far as I'm aware, the red cross appeal covers everyone - see here.

And bloody good on 'em, I say.

biggitdad · 26/07/2007 21:35

The floods on the news are not in the south, they are in the west country.

SaintGeorge · 27/07/2007 00:47

The west country of course being approx 150 miles further south than the previous, ignored, floods.

soames · 27/07/2007 09:08

Noah has been providing all these waders.
They are Waders of the lost Ark.

AramintaAlice · 27/07/2007 12:28

Hear hear, FioFio

My thoughts all the way through this thread , lol.

kitkath · 29/07/2007 21:34

Does it really matter who gets the most press coverage?! Is it a competition to see who is more popular? I live in gloucester and thank the lord did not get flooded out, however i have not had running water to feed or bath my baby in for the last week and for a period had no electricity. The services have been great giving out the free stuff though but still very distressing for all. So instead of sitting and moaning about who is worse off why not count yourselves lucky that you can sit in your house, flush your toilet and wash your hands and body whenever the fancy takes you.

Peachy · 29/07/2007 21:44

People ahve died in Gloucester area now (to an earlier post) and at least one young man was missing for a few days before his body was found, so that's news in itself.

I can see long term why te north- south debate needs to happen but right now its about supporting those who ahve no water, whose homes a re damaged etc. Not arguing about whose floods are more on view nationally, iyswim.

Peachy · 29/07/2007 21:47

Oh and trust me there are eareas of the SW which get ignored and left to fester, DS1's a;st school- didnt have a flood but on site it had a storage area for the nuclear waste wagons!!! Now tell me that could happen in London

EricL · 30/07/2007 00:54

I think it has become a much bigger news story now as there were lots of accusations of mis-management last time. The politicians were quicker to respond this time cos they got a bad press for the northern floods.

The fact that it has happened again has also made the issue hit even more headlines because we have all realised now that this is a taste of the future, and the news crews know we all want to know what is being done about it.

I don't think we should make this into a north/south issue so easily.

This fuss about Cameron not being there is ridiculous too. I don't like the guy at all - but what exactly could he have done about it? Talk to us about what he would do if he was in charge? What bloody good would that do for all these poor people?

nappyaddict · 30/07/2007 01:37

since when is gloucescter in the south? its the northest part of the west country/southernist part of the midlands. not sure southernist is a word but it works for what i want to say. worcester was atually worse than gloucester. not sure if it still is though. .

Tortington · 30/07/2007 01:39

course it is an issue i think its naive to suggest otherwise frankly.

those who can commute tot he city are more newsworthy than those who cant.

Peachy · 30/07/2007 11:27

Isn't a lot of the problem in Gloucester realted to a polluted water supply anyway, even in alrge areas that weren't hit by floods as such?

Gloucester is the northenest (not a word LOL) of the West Country yes- it was kinda half way to the Midlands from home (which was Somerset).
