Do you think the floods in the South are more newsworthy than the ones in the North?

as Sky and BBC have all decamped and are LIVE 24 hours a day, all in waders and macs

yet Sheffield and Hull didn't get the same coverage

why is this do you think?

Like I said SaintGeorge my sister was flooded when the ground water rose out of the drains as well and no mention in the news, other areas took precedence.

SaintGeorge · 24/07/2007 22:45

Okaaay, and the reason you are aiming your posts regarding your sister at me are....?

Spidermama · 24/07/2007 22:46

(True 2shoes. The one that got away!)

Desiderata · 24/07/2007 22:47

Sheffield got coverage. The Hull conundrum was brought on on BBC news (Saturday coverage last week).

The BBC apologized.

biggitdad · 24/07/2007 22:58

My point is there are floods in the south that are not reported, yet posters on here want to moan that all news that is reported is in the South. Lets face it the floods in Gloucester etc are in the West country and posters want to include it in the south. South west is Devon/Cornwll/Dorest etc.
I looked at your profile Saint George and I am sorry if you have been flooded, genuinely so.

SaintGeorge · 24/07/2007 23:10

Oh I agree bgd, a lot of areas do get missed out. I think the general moan here though is that it seems the further south you get, the more coverage there is (usually!).

Wherever you are I think live 24 hour news coverage, with reporters who can retire to nice warm, dry hotel rooms each night is really a kick in the teeth for those living through it anyway.

UnquietDad · 24/07/2007 23:20

To be fair - and I live in Yorkshire - the floods here were the main story on BBC News 24 for quite a while, and made the main headlines of all the national papers. So one can't accuse the media this time.

All the same, I imagine most trendies in Islington will have tutted into their lattes, hopped on to their aluminium scooters and forgotten it in an instant. Probably because they expect life in the North to be pretty much like that all the time anyway.

What does annoy me is how much more quickly the Government have agreed to give aid now. It didn't seem to matter when it was only a few grim Northern council estates and suburbs under water. Now that pretty places are starting to be affected, they are taking it seriously...

UnquietDad · 24/07/2007 23:22

And yes, friends have mentioned it being on the news as far afield as Australia and Sweden.

SaintGeorge · 24/07/2007 23:23

But Hull wasn't!

Like Desi said, even the BBC felt they had to apologise and put out a special program because they just forgot about us.

UnquietDad · 24/07/2007 23:25

Yes, even to us in Sheffield the Hull floods seemed to come as a bit of an afterthought story.

Desiderata · 24/07/2007 23:28

StG - I have compassion in my heart for you.

aloha · 24/07/2007 23:29

What floods in Hull?

UnquietDad · 24/07/2007 23:37

@ aloha

gloop
gloo p
gloop!
SaintGeorge · 24/07/2007 23:39

Throws bucket of flood water in aloha's direction.

We could do with a little fishy or whale at the bottom of all that water UQD

Pan · 24/07/2007 23:43

StG - update on my friend who was flooded a week last Wednesday?? United Utilities have agreed to survey the locality to determine was has caused the localised flood. A hugh relief, as without it, insurers were threatening to not provide cover. thanks again.

UnquietDad · 24/07/2007 23:44

I know, but I'm not very good at all that.

Look, it's Tewkesbury Abbey:

SaintGeorge · 24/07/2007 23:46

Snort, I am liking the art UQD.

Excellent news Pan, glad to hear they are doing something. Hope everything goes ok for her from now on.

aloha · 24/07/2007 23:46

Like the little drowning person!

Is it John Prescott?

SaintGeorge · 24/07/2007 23:49

No sign of a jag so it can't be.

I would hold his head under if it was.

Desiderata · 24/07/2007 23:56

Yes, what is that fat, unfeasibly ugly fecker from Hull doing about the flooding.

I doubt that he's allowed to walk the streets. He might start a bow wave.

Pan · 24/07/2007 23:59

Well, he's probably doing nothing. As recent current affairs indicate he is no longer Dep. PM?

Pan · 25/07/2007 00:04

Or..he could be used as a dam??

UnquietDad · 25/07/2007 00:05

Two Sandbags!

Desiderata · 25/07/2007 00:11

Good thinking, boys. Lie down, you fat fecker. The nation is depending on you.

SaintGeorge · 25/07/2007 00:13

Gawd no, if 2 Jags sees water he thinks he's back on the ferry and would start asking for tickets.

Although Pauline's hairstyle would make a suberb dam. Enough hairspray to hold back the Atlantic.
