Including in cases of rape and incest.
Bye bye women's rights.

This abortion outrage (first Georgia now Alabama) is slowly turning into the Hamdmaids Tale! It's mental! How are these laws getting through?? Next they will be taking away women's right to vote and work!

SaskiaRembrandt · 15/05/2019 08:41

Please excuse the terrible SPAG, I'm still not awake.

Breastfeedingworries · 15/05/2019 08:47

I’m horrified and disgusted by this, no woman should have to give birth against her will! It’s her body, hope they carry guns and shoot men in their cocks as that’s about how painful childbirth is!

tisonlymeagain · 15/05/2019 08:49

Why the hell wouldn’t you be?!! The erosion of a women’s right to choose impacts us all. It sets precedents all over the world. You’d be INSANE to ignore it.

@OhFFSMary THIS! In spades.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/05/2019 08:50

Just listened to the man behind this bill. He considers life to begin from the moment the sperm joins the egg.

That would mean the morning after pill and several forms of contraception would be ruled out, although I don't know if the new law addresses this. If it doesn't, it will only be a matter of time.

Blessed be the fruit.

Teacakeandalatte · 15/05/2019 08:52

I know Tomtom apologised but the point is they are a modern 21st century country, with so called equal rights for women- just like us- taking away women's rights. So doesn't that say this could happen here?
I was especially concerned by the Georgia version where women could be sent to jail for life if it is considered that their behaviour caused them to miscarry. No matter what you think of abortion that has to worry you.

Thunderwing · 15/05/2019 08:55

Yes the man behind the bill considers life to begin from the moment the sperm joins the egg... unless it happens in a clinic in which case it's not important. The Bill has sweet FA to do with caring for the rights of unborn children, and is only about the control of women.

Under His Eye indeed.

OhFFSMary · 15/05/2019 09:02

I feel so helpless watching this stuff happening. It’s like the proverbial slow car crash happening before your eyes, you know the impact and shock waves are going to happen but you can do nothing to stop it. A very sad and frightening time to be a woman.

RaptorWhiskers · 15/05/2019 09:12

I'm guessing it's anything that furthers the rights of men
In many cases men get women pregnant but don’t want to be fathers and would prefer abortion. There’s been much talk about how unfair it is that they have to pay maintenance for a child they didn’t want because the mother chose to keep it against their wishes. So there will be a negative effect on men too.

In the US can you travel out of state to have an abortion?
The Georgia heartbeat bill specifically says that travelling out of state to procure an abortion is conspiracy to murder.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 15/05/2019 09:19

This is fucked up.

And what happens if you miscarry? As well as going through that trauma, will every woman who miscarries also face some sort of investigation or be arrested? What if you can't afford legal representation? The medical community have admitted that there's still a lot they don't fully understand about pregnancy and more research needs to be done ( <a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=beta.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/long-overlooked-by-science-pregnancy-is-finally-getting-attention-it-deserves/2019/03/06/a29ae9bc-3556-11e9-af5b-b51b7ff322e9_story.html%3FoutputType%3Damp&ved=2ahUKEwjdmNbBiJ3iAhU-SxUIHXCJCi4QFjAJegQIARAB&usg=AOvVaw3694wvfuJw93nyPnjENWv7&ampcf=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=beta.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/long-overlooked-by-science-pregnancy-is-finally-getting-attention-it-deserves/2019/03/06/a29ae9bc-3556-11e9-af5b-b51b7ff322e9_story.html%3FoutputType%3Damp&ved=2ahUKEwjdmNbBiJ3iAhU-SxUIHXCJCi4QFjAJegQIARAB&usg=AOvVaw3694wvfuJw93nyPnjENWv7&ampcf=1 ) so how are they going to prove a miscarriage? Will they be able to pick apart a woman's lifestyle choices and find her guilty of abortion if she does things they deem risky to pregnancy?

It smacks of a great big witch hunt, may as well bring back the ducking chair.

More will follow. Gilead is here.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 15/05/2019 09:22

It's so bloody terrifying. What next? I mean are women in the US actually looking at becoming 2nd class citizens with all autonomy over their own bodies being taken away? And if the US can do this, where next?

Flaggyvase · 15/05/2019 09:23

Sounds like a good time to become a lesbian. Or will that be illegal soon too?

LovelyCocksReg · 15/05/2019 09:25

Has anyone read Red Clocks by Leni Zumas?

lablablab · 15/05/2019 09:28

Yes the man behind the bill considers life to begin from the moment the sperm joins the egg... unless it happens in a clinic in which case it's not important.

Such hypocrisy! So it really is all to do with control of women. How dare they! How dare anyone make women and girls give birth to a baby against their will?! It really is becoming Gilead. Terrifying.

Where are the wives, mothers, sisters and daughters of these men? They should be kicking their arses back to work to undo these twattish decisions! If any male members of my family were involved in this, I'd make it crystal clear how I felt. Angry

beenandgoneandbackagain · 15/05/2019 09:33

I would love to live in a world where abortion wasn't necessary. Where all pregnancies were safe, wanted, happy and ended up with a beautiful baby.

I would also love to live in a world where women only ever had sex when they wanted to with men who were mature and responsible, where contraception was 100% reliable. So no rape, no sulky men, no coercion, no men running from responsibility or denying paternity)

However, we don't live in that world so abortion is a very sad, but very necessary, intervention.

We are living under his eye. Given the shit maternity provisions in the USA this is really a far greater step backwards for women than just the denial of bodily autonomy. It will also affect a woman's chance of financial independence.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2019 09:34

"
Where are the wives, mothers, sisters and daughters of these men?"
I'm guessing they're ironing their shirts

Baloonphobia · 15/05/2019 09:39

You'd be surprised how many women support this. I don't think it's purely a man v woman thing. I think it's much more a conservative vs liberal thing. That's just my opinion though.

MangoFeverDream · 15/05/2019 09:39

States like Alabama pass laws they know will be overturned every few years (Ohio is another state that does this a lot) because they want the law to be heard at the Supreme Court. They believe that someday a more favorable court will overturn Roe and they’ll be able to outlaw abortion in their state; meanwhile, states like NY and VA are bolstering their abortion access laws, in the case that Roe is repealed. Which is why you are seeing plenty of debate about new laws in those states as well.

If you are a strict constitutionalist in the American sense, you would overturn Roe because it’s traditionally the state’s right to make laws like this. However, I personally am horrified at the thought of Roe being repealed, even though I acknowledge Roe itself is on shaky ground.

Wish we could have Congress pass a real federal law on abortion access, but it would never happen in the current climate.

YemenRoadYemen · 15/05/2019 09:43

The US is tuning into a Wild West banana republic, and it's becoming increasingly hard to have any sympathy, given the ongoing support for Trump.

Enough support, that there's a distinct possibility he will win 2020. In fact, I will go out on a limb and say he will.

I know most of his support comes from stupid, ignorant white men, but why do so many women over there support him?

gamerwidow · 15/05/2019 09:46

tomtom1999xx I get where your coming from. The situation in Alabama is appalling and frightening but where is the anger for the women of NI who are living under the exact same rules right now. Yes we can and should be angry about both but too many UK women are complacent about our own citizens being denied autonomy over their own bodies.

gamerwidow · 15/05/2019 09:48

So doesn't that say this could happen here?
It does happen here. What are we going to do about it?

Papergirl1968 · 15/05/2019 09:50

I'm just reading a Jodi Picoult book about a shooting at an abortion clinic in the USA, which explores what a contentious issue it is over there and how different states have different policies.
Fiction but clearly well researched. It's called Spark of Light.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/05/2019 09:59

Only a matter of time before all women at airports or at the US borders with Canada and Mexico will be forced to undergo pregnancy testing before being allowed to proceed.

prh47bridge · 15/05/2019 11:28

I don’t understand why, with Roe v. Wade in existence, states can still make this law

It is always open to people and states to defy the law or ignore a court decision. It is against the law to break the speed limit but it doesn't stop people from doing so. However, the existence of Roe v Wade means this law is likely to be struck down by the courts since the lower courts are bound by the decision of the Supreme Court. Ultimately I would expect this (and the similar law changes in other states) to end up in the Supreme Court.

Opponents of abortion have been emboldened by Trump's rhetoric (talking about doctors and mothers "executing" babies) and the current balance on the Supreme Court, leading them to believe they may be able to overturn Roe v Wade. It is already the case that over half of US states are considered hostile to abortion due to restrictions on access to legal termination.

I sincerely hope this law and other similar ones passed recently are struck down by the courts quickly and the opponents of abortion are disappointed by the outcome when this reaches the Supreme Court.

Welcome to Gilead. May the lord open. Praise be. WANKERS
