Including in cases of rape and incest.
Bye bye women's rights.

They are hoping it will go to the supreme court because the make up of the judges is more right wing because of the two new Trump appointments.

As to the precedence of Roe and Wade , apparently (according to DH), there was a recent ruling on something (not sure what but tax related he thinks ) where they reversed a supreme court previous decision.

I think they are hoping the combination of a new political make up of the judges and some recent rulings where precedent has been ignored will mean they bypass Roe and Wade.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2019 07:13

Right. How far out does our reach extend?can we talk about issues in France now? After Brexit?
Thanks for the apology but I personally still find your initial views which I assume still stand blinkered and short sighted.

So, so corrupt

@tomtom1999xx I think my concern about this is more that these are rights that are being taken away, rather than rights which were never there in the first place. Of course we should fight to try to change the law in NI, but when women's rights are being actually removed, it's quite a scary thing!

lightlypoached · 15/05/2019 07:15

yes, legal consequences of up to 99 years in jail - even if you do the abortion out of state - as i understand it.

hypocritical religious nutters, may they rot in hell for this decision.

Yes I see that now.

Hadn’t heard the full news report.

Apologies again op.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2019 07:22

Thanks. Now the people who actually want to discuss this can continue.
Does anyone know how long the next step will take?

Awful, awful, awful news.

specterlitt · 15/05/2019 07:36

The "free world" where women are still being told what they can and cannot do with their body. Pieces of shits. But is this any surprise? I think it will only get worse in the US for women with that pumpkin in power and knowing who really call the shots in decision making.

OhFFSMary · 15/05/2019 07:36

And so women will have to hide pregnancies, try and leave the state without anyone knowing, have an abortion and return home as if nothing happened. No support, no care, no respite.
Is the morning after pill still legal?

Totally agree with the poster who said it is the REMOVING of women’s hard fought for rights which is so terrifying. How are we living in a time where women’s rights are being taken away? The trans movement has caused and still is causing a lot of damage too IMO - whilst I acknowledge the inequalities towards trans people needs to be addressed why must it always be at the expense of women’s rights?

How on earth is this happening and what can we do?

LovelyCocksReg · 15/05/2019 07:39

This is fucking awful. What can we do?

Goandplay · 15/05/2019 07:40

I’m struggling to word what I want to say so if it comes across clumsy please excuse me.

It feels like the ‘state’, the collective whole of the country (UK as well) think they own women and our bodies. At the very least that it’s acceptable to comment and pass judgment freely.

This is another step towards making us ‘legal’ second class citizens.

Flaggyvase · 15/05/2019 07:40

If this doesn't indicate the difference between the UK and parts of the US I don't know what does. The only 'solution' to this is to think that everyone who doesn't agree will have to move out the state (or never have sex or be raped Hmm) leaving only people who are completely happy with the law. Shame for kids and those who can't move away for various reasons of course.

God it is utterly depressing. Welcome to the 21st century.

Waterandlemonjuice · 15/05/2019 07:42

So depressing

Mummaofmytribe · 15/05/2019 07:45

This removal of womens rights is going to spread. Alabama won't be the only state to do this.

Flaggyvase · 15/05/2019 08:04

Of course, banning contraception is the next logical step.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2019 08:05

And decriminalising rape

To be expected from such a gropey president

Those on the tv last night cheering it on - I was wondering how they would feel if it was their (child) daughter who had been raped (god forbid), or pregnant with a child who may be born alive but not survive beyond a few moments.

How will these people support the babies and families born as a result of the ban? Are they going to open more orphanages or give more money to support families who can’t manage?

What about the mums who will die as a result of backroom abortions?

Justheretosee · 15/05/2019 08:10

tomtom I know what you meant in original statement and as citizen of the north of Ireland I did initially think “do they know we don’t have that right here” aswell as so many others but then reread that Alabama did actually have it then pulled which does seem even worse! I do appreciate you voicing support for us over here though!

Sorry for hijacking thread !

GabrielleNelson · 15/05/2019 08:19

When Georgia was in the news last week for planning to ban abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy Hmm I saw on Twitter a suggestion that some filmmakers would no longer go there to film because they considered it unsafe and unacceptable for their female crew and cast members. (I think there was a growing film industry, which was why this was more than just a gesture.)

That kind of economic consequence might make a difference, but looking at the fanaticism of some Brexiteers who wave adverse economic consequences away because 'it's the principle that counts' I wouldn't bet on it.

Lexilooo · 15/05/2019 08:22

And this is what we can expect over here if people persist in supporting Rees-Mogg and his ilk

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2019 08:23

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD I suspect the answers are 'tough' and 'tough'

I was just going to say this. We already have a situation where abortion is severely restricted in part of the UK, we can't complacent and assume that couldn't be extended to the other constituent countries. There are political and religious movements with anti-women agendas gaining political prominence at the moment who would be only to happy for that to happen.
