It's being reported on the news that two of this weekend's terrorists are doctors. Whatever happened to their Hippocratic oath?

Speedy "why dont these misguided fools stay in their muslim countries" is a little out of order.

dinny · 02/07/2007 18:54

unbelievable - what the hell happened to "first do no harm"?

lunatics.

mumblechum · 02/07/2007 19:40

Glitterfairy, I think Speedy was referring specifically to extremists, not the law abiding majority of Muslims.

speedymama · 02/07/2007 19:52

Glitteryfairy, I was referring to the foreign terrorists who come here to commit their atrocities. They hate the West and its values so why debase themselves by mingling with the infidel?

These people hate everyone in the West and that includes the 99% majority of law abiding Muslims. In fact, as said below, these people are not true followers of Islam anyway. They are just misanthropists who want to murder anybody who does not believe in their twisted dogma.

islandofsodor · 02/07/2007 21:05

We do have to keep this in perspective.

They were doctors at my local hospital which is just round the corner from my dd's school. There are many, many asian doctors children at dd's school, in fact parents evening is a bit like a consulting room. The majority are the most lovely people you could come come across.

In all walks of life you are going to find extremists. It is scary being so close to home but I do hope there isn't a backlash against these hardworking immigrants. The BNP is getting too much of a foothold around here as it is.

glitterfairy · 02/07/2007 23:06

I guess I felt that the wording was a trifle unfortunate though Speedy. It is such a difficult and emotive subject in any case.

I dont think people's occupation as such prevents them from holding deep political or religious beliefs and often these may seem incompatible with their work.

jampot · 02/07/2007 23:27

a muslim girl ive been sitting next to at work for the past couple of months has a lot to say on the subject of islam and terrorists but mainly that Islam is basically a peaceful religion and terrorists acting in the name of islam are doing the exact opposite of their supposed beliefs. That said it didnt stop her from telling me that "America is the root of all evil"

Martha200 · 02/07/2007 23:40

Can't help but think also of what it says again about a country that takes on professionals who trained abroad rather than take on its own talent

suedonim · 03/07/2007 00:04

Oops, so sorry, I didn't intend to offend with the title of this, I didn't check it properly before I posted, though I vaguely realised it didn't read well.

I've been in touch with MN HQ, who can't change the title, but suggest that I could add here that I mean suspected terrorists, which was indeed my intention.

Martha2000, if we didn't ake on any overseas doctors, the NHS would grind to a halt! Due to the nature of the work, we need far more junior doctors than we have senior positions for. If we trained enough UK doctors to fill the junior posts, many would be unemployed 10 years later. Of course, we could expand the numbers at the senior level, but then we would have to pay Consultants large sums of money to do the less skilled tasks, and they would have less time to do the skilled work.

In addition, there is a scarcity of training avavilable oversea- many doctors come here to get training, and fully intend to go home at the end of it. In fact, just prior to this latest recrutment fiasco, the government, with the connivance of the EU, has made it MUCH more difficult for (eg) Indian doctors to get jobs here, but we still have to consider EU doctors for jobs. Indian doctors train using the English language, and are usually fluent, albeit with an accent. The EU doctors who actually want to come here don't. In addition, UK medical schools and Royal Colleges have longstanding links with Indian medical schools, and have influenced the training, so it is very similar to ours. No such influence in the EU.

End of rant

glitterfairy · 03/07/2007 08:05

Our medical training is put on a pedestal by many countries and in Egypt doctors have to come here at a junior level in order to get jobs in hospitals.

Eliza2 · 04/07/2007 08:56

Some of the doctors who come from Muslim countries may well have deep-seated views about the Iraq war.

Well, this is a free country. They can write, blog and talk about these views without fear of being arrested. They will probably find a lot of Brits are very sympathetic to them.

Nobody needs to plant a bomb to make a point over here.

There is no justification for this.

speedymama · 04/07/2007 09:10

I wonder if these people who use the Iraq war to justify their terrorist acts were similarly outraged when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait or when he started the long war with Iran or when he destroyed the land of nearly half a million Marsh Arabs in Southern Iraq or when he gassed to death over 5000 Kurds in 1998?

Their logic is illogical imo.

Come to think of it, where are the flag burning, chest beating screeching hordes who always manifest themselves when they take offence to something as outrageous as Danish cartoons or an author receiving a knighthood but never appear when attempts are made to deliberately murder innocent people?

glitterfairy · 04/07/2007 09:35

Speedy I totally agree with you.

I also agree that no needs to bomb anyone but somehow they feel that it is the onyl option adn I wonder what it takes to make people realise it is not an option which gains anything at all.

SueBaroo · 04/07/2007 09:41

Yes, it would be nice to see a big Muslim demo with the slogan 'Terrorism - not in my name!' or something like that.

glitterfairy · 04/07/2007 09:42

After the Danigh carton fiasco there was a wonderful muslim web site where two men discussed freedom of speech and apologised for it.

mozhe · 04/07/2007 09:47

Doctors come in all 'shapes and sizes', morally and ethically.....there is nothing special about us compared to other groups of workers imo...it's a myth that clings to the profession, not true and not helpful either.

speedymama · 04/07/2007 10:04

I'm currently reading The Islamist by Ed Hussain as recommended by Martianbishop. It is a real eye opener. These people are driven by a political ideology of Islam based on the writings of Abul Ala Mawdudi and regard Muslims who do not follow their version as Partial Muslims and the rest of us as Kafirs, an Arabic derogatory term for non-Muslims.

Mawdudi wrote "Islam is a revolutionary doctrine and system that overthrows governments. It seeks to overturn the whole universal social order. He also wrote
"It is therefore the primary duty of all those who aspire to please God to launch an organised struggle, sparing neither life nor property for this purpose"

Mawdudi's clarion call is for his followers to remove disbelieving rulers and to create a society ruled by the righteous, ie Islamists.

These people are very dangerous. What's more, Ed Hussein mentions former members of the group that he use to belong to (Jamet-e-Islami and its off-shoots like the Young Muslim Organisation) who went on to be head of the Muslim Council of Britain, chair of Muslim Aid and an activist for the Respect Party.
