It's being reported on the news that two of this weekend's terrorists are doctors. Whatever happened to their Hippocratic oath?

The doctor named in the papers this morning works at my local hospital.

But yes as cod says only 'suspected' as yet.

Judy1234 · 02/07/2007 09:48

Most of the people they pick up are completely innocent and cleared. I wouldn't assume anyone they stopped on the motorway is guilty. At least they didn't kill him this time.

suedonim · 02/07/2007 09:51

They've named someone?

It was reported yesterday that they were not British Fio. I think generally you just have to have 'permission to work'. Which just means that being here legally I suppose.

I think people are just shocked that a doctor maybe involved in that you see him or her as a 'trusted' person.

ruddynorah · 02/07/2007 12:23

but even if that were the case fio- what would you expect a security clearance check to show up? that they are terrorists?

nailpolish · 02/07/2007 12:23

my friend is Russiana nd qualified gp in Russia. she cannot work here as a gp as she cannot pass the exams requred to work here as a gp. including the english exam

Non-nationals have to have the same security checks as nationals as far as I know.

My friend is Australian, to work in a school here, she had to have the usual police checks with the police in the UK! She did point out that since she ad just arrived here for the first time it was rather pointless but boxes have to be ticked

Judy1234 · 02/07/2007 13:55

I had to contact the criminal records bureau a few months ago and I was told they don't have ability to check criminal records abroad except in some EU states but not India which was the country concerned in our case.

Judy1234 · 02/07/2007 13:57

Most potential terrorists etc have very clean records which is why finger printing and various other intrusive surveillance type things we have introduced just get data that isn't needed and reduce our rights whilst not helping catch criminals - same with ID cards. Not that hard to produce fake pass ports etc if you're a proper criminal.

tissy · 02/07/2007 14:00

np, all non-EU foreign nationals have to take a certificate of competency in English, and have to prove that their medical training is up to scratch- we don't have close educational links with Russia, so that would be tricky, I think.

What's more bizarre, is that EU nationals don't have to prove they can speak English!

Judy1234 · 02/07/2007 14:01

I saw that and also 1 in 5 of the recent doctor recruits (following all that trouble over recruitment recently) are not from the UK leaving UK trained ones without jobs because the system was set up to be completely neutral on your nationality. Interesting issues.

themoon66 · 02/07/2007 14:29

Not surprised about them being doctors.... I saw how a lot of ours sat in the doctors mess watching telly and cheering as the twin towers fell on 9/11

Um, as others have pointed out...they are not 'terrorists', they are people who have been arrested as part of an ongoing investigation and have not been charged yet, and the title of this thread is potentially HUGELY defamatory if the two men are found to be innocent of all blame. (Which has happened in previous 'terrorist' investigations). So perhaps a thread title change might be in order?

(Yes, I am paranoid about libel, part of my job...)

contentiouscat · 02/07/2007 14:53

"the tendancy of the west to bomb and fund the bombing of majority-Islam countries"

You know I keep hearing this as justification for their actions but surely the escalation of problems with the west started when fanatics flew two planes into the twin towers killing thousands of innocent people of all religions and nationalities.

contentiouscat · 02/07/2007 15:05

I am quite suprised by the tendency these days to name someone as soon as they are arrested, like the chap in Portugal if he was completely innocent that has potentially destroyed his life.

nailpolish · 02/07/2007 15:08

Eu nationals dont have to prove they speak engilish?

krang · 02/07/2007 15:24

Naming someone at least ensures that in this country the police cannot arrest someone in secret. The theory is that if people are named then they can't be 'disappeared' the way they can in many other countries. Dragging people away in the dead of night and never saying who they are or where they've been taken is a characteristic of many repressive regimes.

Naming someone shouldn't be a problem - it's the tendency of others to libel the arrestee that's the problem. Including both the public and the press.

speedymama · 02/07/2007 15:33

There is no justification for these actions and why people keep blaming the actions of the West for the actions of these murderers is beyond me.

In 1998, the US Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania were bombed by Al Qaeda. Nearly 300 people were killed and about 5,000 wounded in Kenya . In Dar es Salaam 10 were killed and 77 wounded.
Guess what? Most of them were Africans, not Westerners. Do you think that bothered those murdering Islamists? Of course not. Does not stop the apologists trying to justify their twisted logic though.

Why don't these wannabe bombers remember that it was Western govts like Britain and USA who stopped the genocide of Muslims in Bosnia and Kosovo and saved thousands of lives.

Why don't they campaign about the treatment of the Kurds (who are also Muslim) in Iran,Iraq and Turkey?

Where is the villification of the genocide of black Africans by Muslims in Darfur?

Why don't these misguided fools stay in their Muslim countries and use their energy to reform their corrupt govts and mediaeval traditions such as murdering a female in the name of honour for having the temerity to show an ankle in public or allowing schoolgirls to die in a fire rather than flee a burning building because they are not wearing the proper attire?

mumblechum · 02/07/2007 15:47

Well said, Speedy.

policywonk · 02/07/2007 15:55

Agree w/ Krang, Xenia and iCod - innocent until proven guilty. How many times have the police picked people up recently, announced that they were involved in similar plots, held them without charge for as long as they could and then had to drop all the charges? This thread title is a bit out of order.
