I was. I have chosen NOT to tell my nearly 4yo about this. I haven't discussed it in detail with 9yo ds either I CHOOSE not to put the news on in our house. I really resent this being shoved at my children before a U cert movie. Completely inappropriate imo.

What WWW said.

Skribble · 01/07/2007 21:03

I haven't seen the ad so I won't fill that out. those who have seen it and object should though.

MrRuffalo · 01/07/2007 21:03

yes www i agree
i have not seen the ad so should not comment

binkleandflip · 01/07/2007 21:03

plus I go to the flicks for escapism - see a film and some trailers for other stuff if I get there early. If I want the news I'll stay at home and watch it. It is completely wrong that any news is shown in cinemas and complaints should be made, whatever the subject matter.

FelicityMontgomery · 01/07/2007 21:04

Enids comment was not about easing the parents feelings but about the inconvenience and upset it causes/could cause her family.

I really did find that shocking in it's selfishness.

we may all think we know what would now be best for the parents, but probably (a guess obviosuly as I can only fleetingly bear to imagine their position), they still feel a need to live in some hope.

for me, a crucial point here is about timing. if you are going to expose young children to this at all, you need to do it in a quiet moment when you are available to answer their questions.

Greensleeves · 01/07/2007 21:06

I think you misread Enid's comment FM. No selfish motive is implied in it at all, she just said things like this - ie these long painful dragged-out examinations of the whole thing - make her wish something would happen to end it, like the body being found. You're projecting a motive onto it which wasn't there IMO.

Thanks, have complained to the ASA online.

Two tribes ad is awful too, agree, but for different reasons. As if The Daily Mail leads to people sitting quietly reading! It makes me froth at the mouth.

My dd's teacher has taken the time and effort to describe the story in detail to all her class. While she was at it she decided it would also be a good idea to recount to them the tale of Jamie Bulger and the fate he met long before any of them were born.

furReal · 01/07/2007 21:09

I think that all this publicity runs the risk of backfiring though. MAdeleine's picture will be seen in so many places that it will almost be a part of what we see on a daily basis, and people will tune out to it and won't even look.

Everyone in the UK must know by now, and those that don't either aren't aware, or choose not to be aware of what's going on in the world so aren't the types of people to look out for her.

It's been about 8 weeks of this now, and there's been nothing. don't you think that if she was out there, given the amount of publicity, she would have been found?

bakedpotato · 01/07/2007 21:09

useful point Noonar. Try doing this awful story justice in the dark while the ad for the Red Bull air race is coming at you.

WideWebWitch · 01/07/2007 21:09

I think given a £2.5m reward...

Jesus Spider, I would be incandescent . Who the HELL do teachers think they are, to take something like this into their own hands? I was angry enough about a teacher taking it upon herself to explain the crucifixion to ds1 this Easter (it's not a Christian nursery!!), but that would have really made me blow my stack.

Ellbell · 01/07/2007 21:11

I was shocked by this today, too. As it happens my dds (5 and 7) do know about Madeleine (mainly because dd1 shares her name and was therefore immediately drawn to newspaper headlines about her when it first happened). But we don't discuss it at length, and if they ask questions I answer as minimally as possible. I just thought that this was really inappropriate, tbh.

binkleandflip · 01/07/2007 21:11

Slightly off point but WHy does everything have to be labelled sexist, not sexist, racist, not racist, prejudiced, not prejudiced?

Does everything need to be labelled one way or the other? Not trying to start a row but it's getting beyond reason in my opinion.

I've seen it and sort of think - so what? It's sending up stereotypical stuff about blokes and women, big deal. Adverts aren't generally supposed to be taken literally are they?

furReal · 01/07/2007 21:17

I think the publicity should stop now, which for the most part it has to be fair. But I think now that the McCanns have done all that they can. Madeleine's picture has been put out there, there's not really anything else they can do, the police are there to do the investigating after all, and the more publicity there is, the more speculation there is and that also includes not such positive speculation.

I read somewhere that Gerry Mccann has put in his blog that people should put the local police numbers into their mobile phones before going on holiday just in case they spot MAdeleine. Surely only gules would do that?

whats 'gules' fureal??

PandaG · 01/07/2007 21:22

ghouls ?

binkleandflip · 01/07/2007 21:23

AH, but they didnt show that at all now did they? And erm - as far as I know - women do tend to be into make-up....

I'm not getting into a dispute about it, I just dont get why we have to look for reasons to be affronted in the most trivial of things.
