Madeleine McCann info shown before Shrek, anyone else cross about this?

I was. I have chosen NOT to tell my nearly 4yo about this. I haven't discussed it in detail with 9yo ds either I CHOOSE not to put the news on in our house. I really resent this being shoved at my children before a U cert movie. Completely inappropriate imo.

OP posts:

well it is rare here

and my children don't need to know about it

and even if I did bang on about Madeleine McCann or Jamie Bulger, like some demented obsessive person, the fact is that if someone wanted to break into my house and take them from their beds, they theoretically could and there would be bugger all we could do about it.

katelyle · 03/07/2007 10:34

Thank you, speccy. Happy to be corrected. My point remains valid, I think.

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/07/2007 10:34

The "if it were your child you would want it to happen" argument doesn't wash. I dare say I would want it to happen, but it wouldn't make it right.

If my child were murdered, I may well be baying for blood. But I am against the death penalty.

Rational decisions should be made by people who are not so distraught that they, quite understandably, lose sight of the bigger picture.

Rhubarb · 03/07/2007 10:35

Was this an ad about stranger danger or an ad reminding people to look out for her?

Because your kids live in a cupboard under the stairs, surely they know about this little girl by now? Her picture has been EVERYWHERE.

katelyle · 03/07/2007 10:36

Thank you too, expatinscotland. Still think my point remains valid.

expatinscotland · 03/07/2007 10:37

Katy, I never disagreed with any 'point'.

bundle · 03/07/2007 10:37

Madeleine's own siblings who are very young have been told that she's "gone away" for a bit..though this is obviously very hard for the parents, they've done this with advice from experts and I think any parent would anyway, to protect their children.

KrustyTheClown · 03/07/2007 10:38

I think even the McCanns said (and I'm not sure whether this has changed now that she's been gone for so long ) that they hadn't told their twins exactly what had gone on - in fact, I think there was a story fairly soon afterwards saying how they wanted to shield them from it all.

KrustyTheClown · 03/07/2007 10:40

sorry bundle x-posted with you there

Rhubarb · 03/07/2007 10:40

Err people - can you tell me a little more about the ad please or do I really have to read every single post?

actually the stats for child abuse have been state as high as 1 in 7 by some sources so warning children about stranger danger or not a stranger danger is sensible. it also starts to empower them - it is ok to feel uncomfortable to expect someone to respect their body and that they can ask for support in changing / stopping a situation they dont like.

LennyLapin · 03/07/2007 10:41

McCanns try to shield twins

biddzy01 · 03/07/2007 10:42

Well I can't believe what I am reading on here and I am quite sure that if any of your children were taken by a peadaphile or for whatever reason you would all be doing as much as you could to get your children back. Mind you reading some of your comments I'm not so sure that you would be bothered.

Bunch of idiots

wannaBe · 03/07/2007 10:42

it's a find Madeleine ad Rhubarb, which makes reference to her having been snatched from her bed, something which people felt it was inappropriate for their children to know as it might scare them into thinking the same could happen to them.

Rhubarb · 03/07/2007 10:44

Thank you Wannabe. In that case I agree, I would not want my dd to watch Shrek and come away being scared that someone will snatch her from her bed. She has enough fears as a youngster anyway.

If it was just a look for Madeleine ad, fair enough.

I didn't go into all the details about how he was killed Enid but yes I did tell her that occasionally small children get taken from their parents/carers by other people who don't care about them and hurt them and used Jamie's case (not his name) as an example. She was about 3/4 at the time - she was and still is a bit of a wanderer and I thought it better to explain to her why she ought to stop with her family rather than just run off as she felt like it once she started coming off reins. Granted Jamie is thankfully an extreme example of a bad combination of events. I think it's probably more effective to tell her simply that some children have vanished and why (in line with stranger danger talks) once she'd done it a few times always stressing that I would be worrying about her until she was back in my arms again. I won't say that it hasn't done her any harm and maybe it didn't do her any good either.

feel the love! .

seriously, if my child were taken by a paedophile I would do anything in my power to get that child back. But I really do not believe that people watching shrek, who have seen the news a hundred times over anyway so are already well aware of what has happened, will suddenly be in a greater position to find Madeleine than they would have been before having seen the advert. In fact I don't think the advert will do anything at all.

she's not in the UK.
she's not going to be in any of the holiday hot-spots in Europe.
she's not going to be at the cinema watching shrek.
she's probably not even alive any more.

fgs get real.

dara · 03/07/2007 10:47

All this talk about teaching kids about stranger danger, warning them about wandering off & role playing kidnap attempts is totally irrelevant to the Madeleine case. This girl was snatched from her bed while she slept. What on earth can children 'learn' from that? To be terrified of their bed? Not to go to sleep?
It's not their job to protect themselves from the zillion to one chance that a maniac might creep into the house and steal them from their bed! I think it is almost abusive to let little children think this is even a possibility.

LennyLapin · 03/07/2007 10:47

Oh great, now we're going to be deluged with people joining up just to tell us what selfish bitches we all are.

Biddzy01, it helps to actually READ the thread.

Rhubarb · 03/07/2007 10:49

Biddy my dear, I agree with you that of course they would do anything they can to get her back. So showing a Find Madeleine ad in Shrek is not necessarily a bad idea as it keeps her in peoples minds, and those people are planning their holidays and might just see or hear something.

But you have to understand that children go to see Shrek and as parents, whilst we don't mind ads to try and find her, we don't want our own children to be too frightened to go to bed in case they are snatched. There is no need to add that detail.
