If you are against it - why are you?

Going on the binge drinking thing - does anyone think it may prove a catalyst for more violence when people can't smoke in clubs? (bearing in mind a lot of nightclubs don't provide an outside area).
This does concern me and I am far more concerned about the behaviour and danger on our streets caused by alcohol rather than smoking!

thanks for the lecture

wisteria, just look at the countries that already ahve the ban in place

no bust-ups in clubs over smoking
hardly a single fine handed out

thereofre, its not the hooha or big deal you and everyone else is expecting, believe me

unless yo english folks are planning on reacting differently

ruty · 27/06/2007 13:42

but it is the smokers here who keep trying to make the dangers of smoking so relative, and not as bad as pollution in China/violent drinkers on the streets/global warming etc.

If you gave up, I am pretty sure after a year or two you would start realising how appalling smoking is, how bad it smells, how it can make your eyes water and your clothes stink for days. You may be lucky enough not to suffer from asthma or chest problems, but you will realise what we non smokers are all on about to some degree. Why not give it a go? You can get to the point where you won't want cigarettes at all and will probably detest them around you.

Wisteria · 27/06/2007 13:43

I think that's what I'm worrying about, the English mentality with alcohol in particular seems awful anyway and I've lived all over the place!

francagoestohollywood · 27/06/2007 13:46

other countries don't seem to have the same problem of violence associated to drinking np, though.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 27/06/2007 13:47

ABsolutely ruty. I am an 'ex-smoker', and we are of course, one of the worst.....

Isn't it KIND of smokers to pay for my lung cancer treatment, after they've given it to me
Not long ago I met the teenage daughter and the little boy of just seven with cerebral palsy left behind by a brilliant successful
woman who died from smoking-related lung cancer. You really don't want that to happen to your kids.

ruty · 27/06/2007 13:50

it is because we are 'born again' VVV.

Wisteria we haven't noticed any extra violence, and we live in a Welsh town which is a student area with nothing here but university and many pubs- I think if there were going to be issues we'd be vulnerable (though we have no nightclubs, they're a few miles away- lots of entertainment pubs / theme nights though)

plummymummy · 27/06/2007 14:04

tbh I am still shocked at just how many people smoke. We went to a beer garden the other day and although smoking is still allowed inside there was someone smoking on almost every table - and it's a large garden

southeastastra · 27/06/2007 14:05

you should have seen the amount of smokers at the mn meet up

bookthief · 27/06/2007 14:05

"other countries don't seem to have the same problem of violence associated to drinking" - you have presumably never spent a night out in central Glasgow. Seriously, all these fears were being trotted out before the smoking ban here. Total non-event as it happened. Pretty much everybody just accepted it.

Peachy · 27/06/2007 14:05

Ruty is right I think about smokers making things relative but really, relative is menaningless. So what if pollution is worse or heroin is mroe dangerous (debatable in controlled trials I am told but anyway), all of them have to be managed then- you can't say because one is worse the other becomes negated- 'So sorry your wife was atatcked Mr X however Mr Y had his wife muuges and atatcked and so we will deal with that isntead'-

francagoestohollywood · 27/06/2007 14:06

Which meet ups to you go sea? horror movies addicts? I watched the descent btw...

Peachy · 27/06/2007 14:07

bookthief quite right- did anyone see how much that Cardiff lass on the new Gillian McKeith programme alst night drank? 3 bottles a night!!! Just as bad most palces in the UK I think, not noticed any differences moving from rough poor town in England to here in Wales, tbh.

francagoestohollywood · 27/06/2007 14:09

I wasn't thinking about violent reactions to the ban, bookthief, I think westeria was referring to people congregating outside to smoke and being drunk. Glad to hear that it's probably a groundless fear.

Wisteria · 27/06/2007 14:12

Yes I did - used to live in Cardiff as well and would say that there was not as much nasty trouble in the clubs then as there is where I live now (although obviously I don't frequent them anymore - friends do).
Peachy she did actually say she has been known to drink 3bottles - not every night! I did it once or twice too but I'm certainly not a binge drinker!

bookthief · 27/06/2007 14:15

Nope, nothing like that's happened. Really you don't see big crowds of people congregating outside to smoke. If it's nice weather and tables have been provided then people do stand outside. If it's pissing it down (and this is Scotland we're talking about so...) then 2 or 3 poor souls at any one time most places.

I think a lot of people have majorly cut down the number of fags they smoke on a night out. Not much chain smoking happening any more. Two of my friends are very heavy smokers but if we're out in a pub now they won't have any more cigarette breaks than they would when they're at work and they don't take any longer on them. One says to the other "coming out for a smoke?", they're gone for 5 mins and then back to join the rest of us.

Peachy · 27/06/2007 14:17

I know Isteria but twas funny!

So you know where we are then- student night out spot caerleon (pissheads and romans )

Wisteria · 27/06/2007 14:19

I know exactly where you are now although had thought you may be in Aberystwyth!
She was funny I thought!

bohemianbint · 27/06/2007 14:19

I'm for it, I was even when I still smoked. I figured if they banned it in pubs I'd probably give up entirely as that was when I found it hardest not to light up.

I also cannot stand the smell of stale smoke on your hair and clothes the morning after, eurgh.

Hardly ever get to go to pubs these days though.
