orphans founds starving to death, naked and tied up in iraq, their food sold for profit

This story made me feel v today, in the Mirror (sorry cant do link) all about the soldiers walking in on an orphanage in Iraq where starving little boys were all lying on the concrete dying in the 120F heat.
in the same building their food was being stashed away ready to be sold on for profit..the poor children were like skeletons and covered in their own faeces etc and tied up to the walls.
States all the soldiers were in tears on making their horrible discovery.
Most of the children were too traumatised to talk or move.

Agree re the thread title but I did read the link and I am disgusted and appalled by it. I hope the people that did that got a good kicking when they were found, that's not enough but it's a start. I hope those poor children find some happiness in their lives.

bookwormmum · 21/06/2007 20:12

I don't see what's wrong with the thread title - those poor children.

Just imagine your LOs being in that situation .

Hulababy · 21/06/2007 20:14

THose poor children I hope they are being cared for now.

TaylorsMummy · 21/06/2007 20:28

i don't understand people getting in a strop over this.do none of you read the paper or watch the news? why complain about a bloody thread title?

FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 20:30

We aren't the only ones, and there is currently a thread about this topic in the "site stuff" section with several other posters asking for less brutal thread titles

(there were also a lot of complaints about the bum sex thread FWIW, however comparing discussion of a sexual activity with the torture of children is an odd thing to do IMO)

I find your reaction to my request very rude. I am concerned about this news issue but a less visceral and upsetting title would have been simple to post

there are horrific stories in the news each day as we sadly all know full well, but are we to have detailed and distressing reminders of them all in active convos each time we visit the site?

allgonebellyup · 21/06/2007 20:33

ok ok i wont post another news thread again

OP posts:
crunchie · 21/06/2007 20:39

ffs has MN gone totally PC we'll be having group hugs and toickers next. F&Z IMHO I think you are out of order and being a bit OTT this is the real world brutal as it is. I haven't SEEN the news and would have had NO IDEA about this story unless I had seen it here. I am sorry if this offended you

FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 20:39

That isn't what we're asking, at all

just that it is possible to post threads about news stories without giving very distressing details that people may not wish to see boinging up active convos every 2 minutes

apart from anything else I find it disrespectful to keep seeing the full details of these children's situation sandwiched in between "What's for dinner?" and "Did you see last night's Big Brother?"

FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 20:41

Crunchie there is no need to give all the details in the title

what is wrong with "Tragic news story about orphans in Iraq"? Not gruesome enough for people to come and read more if they wish to?

I don't see what on earth you are talking about being PC for. What does this have to do with being PC? There are some people on the site who find this type of title distressing and I was politely asking if people could avoid posting similar ones in the future. What is out of order or PC about that?

allgonebellyup · 21/06/2007 20:43

its not my fault that people are posting such shallow/meaningless titles such as "whats for dinner tonight?"

Hardly important is it?

OP posts:
crunchie · 21/06/2007 20:45

OK F&Z maybe not PC but too 'fluffy' IMHO

I prefer the rawiness of MN and the variety,, noone forces you to click on a thread

allgonebellyup · 21/06/2007 20:45

If we all went along with our eyes shut then the entire world would be a huge mess (well, worse than it is now)and everyone would be cruising round in their 4x4s thinking "Im ok, sod the rest of the world! lets just pretend they dont exist!"

Reality is shit. Thats life for most people.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 20:47

I feel that you are deliberately misunderstanding me allgonebellyup, but I think I have been quite clear and tried to explain why thread titles such as this one upset a lot of people

I don't think that "What's for dinner" is shallow or meaningless, FWIW

oh here is the thread that also requested more forbearance in titles

allgonebellyup · 21/06/2007 20:51

Well im sorry that some of you are so fragile that you cant spare a thought for how fking shite some other people's lives are..
We are all adults and surely we should accept that these horrors happen rather than sweeping it under the carpet?

and i am on the other thread too..

OP posts:
TheArmadillo · 21/06/2007 20:51

what's the problem with being more considerate with thread titles. It doesn't hurt.

Personally I don't get offended but others do.

Is it worth having an argument over?

beansprout · 21/06/2007 20:52

Life is shit for the vast majority of people on this planet, but forcing that fact in people's faces at every opportunity is not going to change that.

I used to think it was a matter of civic duty to watch the news but since ds was born, and my mummy sensitive instincts have kicked in, I think that people should have the right to edit out information if they need to. Deciding what people should know about is a form of reverse censorship and it doesn't help.

Given that there are a disproportionate number of women here who are pregnant, experiencing PND or just genuinely stressful family lives, I think it is reasonable to not shove traumatic and distressing situations in their faces. I'm 8 weeks preg and am left genuinely distressed by these reports. And what's more, me sitting at home crying about it, won't change any of it, not a jot.

FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 20:52

Allgone I think your posts are rude and aggressive

and you are not listening to a word I am saying, so I will go and find somebody less frustrating to talk to

enjoy your evening

allgonebellyup · 21/06/2007 20:53

Im not rude

im frustrated that nobody gives a shit

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 20:55

You are presuming that nobody gives a shit

you know absolutely nothing about what we feel or think about this situation

just because I don't choose to stew it over on here with a load of people I don't know doesn't mean I don't give a shit

beansprout · 21/06/2007 20:55

Of course we give a shit, we give too much of a shit, that's the problem!!

What do you want us to do? Keep it bumped in active convos to show how much we care?!!!!

allgonebellyup · 21/06/2007 20:56

no

am letting this thread go

if the rest of you would stop saying how much it offends - which actually keeps it bumped up too.

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 21/06/2007 21:01

I think I may be joining hunker very soon.

I hate thread titles like this. They are unecessary, self indulgent, sensationalist. If I wanted to read The Sun, I'd go buy it. But I dont.

doggiesayswoof · 21/06/2007 21:14

I'm totally with F&Z, VVVQV and others on this thread. You can't avoid seeing the thread title in active convos. going into such brutal detail smacks of emotional porn to me. I've been following the situation in Iraq since the invasion - I don't need to be exposed to this sensationalist crap to be informed about what's going on.

I wonder if OP saw the news recently about Iraq now being the no. 2 failed state in the world? Maybe that was less easy to connect with or "care" about because there were no accompanying tragic pictures of orphans?

Those who have objected have only asked for a little more consideration and thought before putting such visceral detail in a thread title, and they have been patronised and insulted in return.

Apologies for bumping this thread - I've had it with this site for now.

Can I ask something?

My perception of MN is that it is a public forum, where we are free to make adult decisions as to what we read and what we post, is that right?

Whilst I find these threads distressing, I choose either to read them or ignore them, thats my freedom of choice.

People should be adult enough to make a decision as to what discussions will upset them and avoid.

my opinion is that if something upsets you the you choose not to read or post.
