The Security Bill for Princess Eugenie’s Wedding is £2 million

And it is coming out of the public purse.

Excellent opinion piece by Libby Purves in today’s Times pointing out that this extravaganza will have an impact on real people and actual crime.

Does the silly Bridezilla really think her Wedding is as interesting as Meghan and Harry’s? If she wants to copy their Wedding, she needs to pay for it.

I criticised the York princesses for not doing more charity work, but that could be difficult considering many charities already have a Royal on their books, and the Yorkies couldn't muscle in on someone else's patch. But Eugenie recently spoke up about scoliosis, which she could have done years ago. Probably there are other issues they could have got involved in.

Yes, there would probably be security expenses if they did any official charity stuff. But that would be acceptable in promoting a good cause. Instead, there's huge security expenses just because of a fancy, look-at-me, carriage drive.

As I said before, it's extraordinary that the Palace really doesn't have a good PR person who can point out the absurdity, but Andrew is the golden child.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/08/2018 10:37

Surely there must be a national charity for people with scoliosis who'd love a royal patron?

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 24/08/2018 10:45

maybe the Queen is extra fond of Andrew because of her friendship with Lord Porchester.

SamanthaBrique · 24/08/2018 15:45

That's the rumour anyway, though can't see HM going in for that sort of thing.

pasttimes11 · 24/08/2018 20:13

The police should be able to say no when ridiculous demands are made on them such as this. They haven't got the man power. I've read of loads of events in the past few years which haven't been allowed because the police can't cover it. It's like Andrews trying to make his daughters wedding more important than it is, they shouldn't be able to have the power to take the police off their normal duties just because she wants a fancy carriage ride. What a pretentious prat Andrew is.

RapidlyGoingMad · 24/08/2018 20:30

Isn't her STBDH brand ambassador for George Clooney's tequila brand? Maybe they could ask him to chip in?

SheStoopsToConker · 24/08/2018 21:03

Oh dear, they come off like their characters in The Windsors here. But maybe they were just nervous.

BishopBrennansArse · 24/08/2018 21:51

@SheStoopsToConker ooh I'm cringing so hard at that

Butteredparsn1ps · 24/08/2018 22:51

Ouch. Hard working Women my arse.

The whole "public" wedding is backfiring a bit by putting the Princesses (and cost of them) under the spotlight, again.

legolammb · 24/08/2018 23:03

Not impressed by this. Especially having recently spent 30 mins on hold trying to get through to the police after my elderly neighbour got assaulted by a road rage wanker. No idea why they can't pay for it themselves if they make the decision to have such a high profile event. I'd like to see B & E stepping back from the public eye a bit and living more down to earth

MissEliza · 24/08/2018 23:27

Queen exactly!!

SamanthaBrique · 24/08/2018 23:42

Eugenie comes across as fairly thoughtful and not unintelligent in this interview. Seems that if they do care so much about various issues then surely there's nothing to stop them being more involved?

pasttimes11 · 25/08/2018 09:57

Even if the pathetic father doesn't have the sense to realise that the public aren't happy about paying for his privileged daughters security, you'd think the queen would realise the mood of the people. Granny's worth approx £365 million, it'd be a trifling sum for her to pay. Instead this over privileged family are after even more once again. I presume they realise how overstretched the police are these days, crime in London at a record high, but what the hell, sod the cost, and taking police off doing their job, protecting the general public, Eugenie wants a carriage ride.......Sickening.

FirstOfHerName · 25/08/2018 10:11

The whole thing runs the risk of becoming a rather embarrassing debacle. Firstly an open-top carriage ride IN OCTOBER is not the most sensible of ideas. Secondly Eugenie may be a "blood princess" but she has nowhere near the wow factor or public interest that Kate and Meghan command. It smacks a bit of keeping up with the Sussexes, only she won't get anywhere near th crowds that Harry and Meghan did. Second-tier princess with grasping parents marries tequila ambassador (whatever that is) doesn't exactly capture the public imagination like St Diana's little boy marries glamorous actress. Far better to do what Zara did and let cameras film her entering and leaving the chapel and maybe sell some photos to Hello.

catherinedevalois · 25/08/2018 10:12

But didn't the recent Trump visit cost us 12 million in security? Did we have a thread about that?

SamanthaBrique · 25/08/2018 10:21

That sounds about right for a visiting head of state, which unfortunately Trump, and I'm not sure how it could be avoided. I'm sure there were similar bills for Obama's visits. The expense for Eugenie's wedding is completely unnecessary.

pasttimes11 · 25/08/2018 12:18

What's the relevance between a visit from the US president and the child of Prince Andrew getting married.

SamanthaBrique · 25/08/2018 13:15

Come on @catherinedevalois, you can't compare the two! Detestable as Trump is, he's still the US president.

MissEliza · 25/08/2018 18:04

The police operation for the Trump visit was the most expensive operation TVP ever carried out. However presidential visits are a necessary evil. Carriage rides for minor royals are not.

pasttimes11 · 25/08/2018 18:40

Exactly, Andrews daughters and their wedding plans are no concern of ours. Why the hell should the taxpayer pay the security of someone who belongs to one of the richest families in Britain. Shes of no interest to the majority of people i should imagine.

catherinedevalois · 25/08/2018 23:34

My point about Trump was meant to include the fact that his decision to nip to Scotland to play golf cost an estimated extra 5 million in security. It was a whim just like Eugenie's with the tax-payer picking up the cost.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 27/08/2018 13:34

Doesn't the police have an overall budget for protection though. So say it's £75 million or whatever.
The weddings come out of that same as large religious conferences and the like. They can be as much as 30 million despite a large number of people not being of that faith.
Maybe with the Queen and DofE slowing down there is more budget for other Royal things like weddings.
My guess would be that it's a bit like local councils. If they don't show they are using their budget it gets slashed. I expect the police force are happy to spend money policing non events like the wedding.

SilverySurfer · 27/08/2018 13:45

Those poor girls work so hard. Do you have any idea how hard it is to go on holiday as many times as they do in a year? It must be exhausting. Hmm

I am a Royalist who believes that Andrew and his daughters take but contribute nothing, although I guess they have provided entertainment over the years with their atrocious sense of fashion. I would like to see all three disappear into obscurity.
