What's all this fuss about Kate Middleton's mum? All because she worked for a living! And had the temerity to say 'toilet'. FFS! They obviously have only contempt for real people.

Kate Middleton will be the Koo Stark of our generation

ie whatever she does at all, will all be harped back to William

hope none of them sell their stories, that would be cheap

doggiesayswoof · 19/04/2007 13:28

Well tbh I don't understand why more people don't want to live in a republic.

doggiesayswoof · 19/04/2007 13:29

x-post with Koo Stark reference - now that is a blast from the past

suejonez · 19/04/2007 13:31

what a pile of upheaval - moving to a republic with all associated law and paperwork changes - for no practical benefit.

I can understand the philsophical arguments against a hereditary monarchy but they really have virtually no practical impact on us at the moment. Any more than the replacement head of state would. Bet the head of state (and his associated office) would cost much the same.

suejonez · 19/04/2007 13:33

I'm not entirely sure that changing their name to Windsor is particularly relevant, it was only done because of of the war with the Germans - it wasn;t because they had any burning desire to be "Windsors"

Tanee58 · 19/04/2007 13:34

Califrau, the Americans (apart from any who are lurking, I'm sure MN Americans are MUCH more knowledgeable ) claim that almost ANYONE or anything famous is American. They probably think Catherine Z-J is American now - she certainly sounds like it. What happened to her accent? Now Richard Burton - lovely boy - lovely voice .... love everything Welsh (biassed by lovely welsh dp

But about the Royals - I think Kate Middleton's better off without - nothing against them as an institution, they're useful to the tourist industry (Americans love em!) but they don't seem to do relationships too well and don't really have a CLUE about how 99% of the country live. Opening allotments and shaking hands at garden parties isn't exactly getting to know the people. Kate'll probably go on to have a much happier life with a real human being (or two - even if they use words like toilets, serviettes and lounges .

suejonez · 19/04/2007 13:35

and the heritage is not "made-up" the lineage of the Royal family is openly taught in schools. They are no more 100% angl-saxon than most of us are if we traced our ancestry back.

doggiesayswoof · 19/04/2007 13:35

Yes I know suejonez, but everyone bangs on about 'our heritage' and my point re the Windsor thing is that they are a total construct.

How many people know they changed their name? Not that many ime.

doggiesayswoof · 19/04/2007 13:36

God, imagine all the paperwork when they scrapped slavery. What a bind

Tanee58 · 19/04/2007 13:37

Come to think of it, even the Royals are a bit Welsh - from the Tudors...

suejonez · 19/04/2007 13:39

I doubt there was very much paperwork at the time and you're not seriously comparing the monarchy with slavery are you? Is that not a little OTT?

But then, as I said, I just don't get the passion. Most of the things I feel passionately about are things which would make a difference to someone (usually me )

doggiesayswoof · 19/04/2007 13:39

Come on the Celts!

suejonez · 19/04/2007 13:41

there are many past kings with a dubious claim to the throne, but probably none for hundreds of years (SJ desparately racks her brain for someone after William of Orange).

doggiesayswoof · 19/04/2007 13:41

Of course it's OTT - I realise I'm being silly. I just feel strongly about living in a country where people have the same (theoretical) opportunities at birth - and having a royal family is a bad starting point for that aim imo.

suejonez · 19/04/2007 13:43

I suppose I just can't get past the practical arguments - ie scrapping the Royal family won;t have one blind bit of difference to anyones opportuniies in this country. Scrapping the government on the other hand...

suejonez · 19/04/2007 13:44

and you just know it would be the govt responsible for bringing in a new system to deal with the republic... and what a good record they have of project management.

doggiesayswoof · 19/04/2007 13:47

Yes, agree that would be an absolute nightmare. 10 years in power and look at the House of Lords - what a massive cock up/wasted opportunity...if they couldn't even manage that...

doggiesayswoof · 19/04/2007 13:51

OK, for anyone who does give a toss!

\link{http://www.republic.org.uk/topfive/index.htm\reasons to be a republic

They say it better than I could.

niceglasses · 19/04/2007 13:56

Maybe if they allowed the daughter of a 'catalogue queen' to share the throne they wouldn't get themselves into so much trouble showing themselves to be so utterly removed from reality.

doggiesayswoof · 19/04/2007 14:06

Whoops

reasons to be a republic

donnie · 19/04/2007 14:12

doggiesayswoof · 19/04/2007 14:17

trice · 19/04/2007 14:18
