Coup in Zimbabwe - 'bloodless transition'

AuntieStella · 15/11/2017 07:59

Though they say it's not a coup

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-41992351

The army has taken control - in what it describes as a bloodless transition - and has also said that Mugabe is safe (though they decline to say where he is)

It's on BBC Breakfast, but not getting that much reporting soon.

Who is likely to be installed as successor?

I wish he could be arrested for human rights offences.

Yes, shame this didn't happen years ago.

PerkingFaintly · 19/11/2017 12:30

Zimbabwe's ruling party sacks Robert Mugabe as leader
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-42043370

Not sure what this means in practice, but fingers crossed for a peaceful and meaningful transition.

Now if only the UK can avoid making things worse by doing ANYTHING AT ALL that could play to Mugabe's "I'm the anti-colonial hero" schtick... Or give even the slightest appearance of messing in elections...

And you know, we have Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary, so no worries.Hmm

TheAntiBoop · 19/11/2017 12:32

Apparently Mugabe is on hunger strike...

Lazy arse bojo needs to keep his mouth shut but not even he can't turn the Zimbabwean people back to him

Butterymuffin · 19/11/2017 12:59

Hunger strike, eh? You go ahead, Bob...

Someone should tape Boris's mouth shut.

TheAntiBoop · 19/11/2017 13:25

Mugabe once said something along the lines of

I'll stay in power until I'm called to join the Angels

🙄

Seriously deluded

MyOtherProfile · 19/11/2017 13:26

I suspect it won't be long til he is indeed with the angels .

TheAntiBoop · 19/11/2017 13:29

I don't think he's going to be with angels

fartyghost · 19/11/2017 13:35

Apparently Mugabe is on hunger strike...

Such a shame.....

PerkingFaintly · 19/11/2017 15:08

Apparently Mugabe is on hunger strike...

Well that will go down well with people who can't afford to buy bread.

tobee · 19/11/2017 15:33

I always find it amazing (and depressing) that old bastards like him seem to live forever.

DaemonPantalaemon · 19/11/2017 18:39

it can only mean more misery for the vast majority of the poor and powerless Zimbabweans. It's bound to descend into shoot-outs between armed factions eager to get their hands on power

Where on earth do people like you get your certainty from? What do you know exactly about Zimbabwe that you can be so certain? I am sorry that your gloom and doom predictions have not come true, instead it has been a lovely show of solidarity from all sides. And by midnight today, Mugabe will be gone.

fartyghost · 19/11/2017 19:35

Mugabe is now saying that he's going to stay on despite the army, though how exactly that is going to happen isn't clear.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-42046911

TheAntiBoop · 19/11/2017 19:40

This isn't good and I'm worried about violence now. I'm just not sure who will be supporting Mugabe now though.

Dh's friends in the country were really surprised (and unhappy). They just want him out

PerkingFaintly · 19/11/2017 19:53
Sad

He didn't get where he is and stay there by being reasonable...

PerkingFaintly · 19/11/2017 19:54

I'm gutted but not even a smidgeon surprised.

TheDayIBroke · 19/11/2017 19:57

Impeachment for him.

I only hope that the evil fool and his wife are stripped of their plundered wealth and it be returned to the people of Zimbabwe. People will be so angry that he used his speech to ramble and not tender his resignation. Honestly, it was a farce of a speech and his senility (everyone in Zimbabwe knows he's not the full shilling, hasn't been for 15+ years) was evident.

My goodness, the people will be fuming! I know I was.

Butterymuffin · 19/11/2017 20:26

It's being reported that Zanu PF intend to impeach him tomorrow.

MyOtherProfile · 19/11/2017 22:27

Where are the MDC in all of this?

VikingVolva · 20/11/2017 08:12

I really thought that, having lost the support of the Veterans, there would be no way for him to continue, and all that remained would be some last haggling over immunity (so he can go off and live quietly somewhere, as Idi Amin did)

Being impeached now seems likely, and what would happen than? Is one scenario house-arrest/detention for life?

TheDayIBroke · 20/11/2017 09:26

Let's see if he will resign by 10am (UK time) today. He will not remain president and will be ousted, either by resignation, impeachment, or by some other means.

It's reported that, whilst Mnangagwa is not sin-free himself with regards to human rights abuses, he knows what needs to be done for the good of the economy. The country is so poor and the people are clinging onto the hope that Mnangagwa will deliver change and turn the country around. Mugabe wanted to divide the country and it's people. A truly wicked man.

PerkingFaintly · 21/11/2017 17:14

Zimbabwe's President Mugabe resigns
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-42071488

Hallelujah!

PerkingFaintly · 21/11/2017 17:18

I bet the cunning old hyaena doesn't actually go, though.

He'll be like a bloke dumped by his wife who somehow doesn't quite move out.

zimbomaman · 21/11/2017 20:06

The happiness on Facebook live feeds this evening is absolutely wonderful to see. I'm 4 bloody 6 and this tyrant came to power just before my 9th birthday. Today is a good day in Zimbabwe's history. Let's focus on this huge positive before turning our attention to the next Zanu Pf crocodile.

PerkingFaintly · 21/11/2017 20:23

I've been sitting here watching vids from the streets! Grin

Yes to everything you said, zimbomaman!

zimbomaman · 21/11/2017 20:27
