Mum takes 5 y/o out of school as he won't drink water!

Anyone see this on GMTV this morning. A school in Yorkshire has introduced drinking water during the day (in lesson times), but this child won't drink water and his mum want him to be able to have jiuce instead. School has said no and so she has taken him out of school as a protest.

Is she being just a bit ott or do you think that it is acceptable for her to take him out, as she isnt getting her own way? Discuss!

she's an idiot

I also have to say to the poster who admitted to cheating with diluted juice that this used to really piss me off when DS was in reception .. every child having the same is fine .. one child coming in with juice because their parent 'knows best' means that other children start asking for juice and you end up having to deal with it .. and they know you know .. even if the bottle is opaque they know

also constantly sipping at juice is bad for teeth

oliveoil · 29/03/2007 09:35

The school is in charge imo

This is how spoilt brats develop - oh it is against my human rights - and running to parents who are insane and agree with them

Twiglett · 29/03/2007 09:36

we have the drinks bottle with water only policy .. parents who flout it get my goat as explained earlier

the children are allowed juice with lunch

Hulababy · 29/03/2007 09:36

If they are truely thirsty a child WILL drink water IME. DD used to turn away from water all the time when smaller. Not now, not when she has no alternative.

DD's school requires drinks of water to be brought in transparent containers.

bozza · 29/03/2007 09:38

My DS never really drunk water at home. He takes a water bottle to school and drinks not much from it. But it is there if he needs it one day - maybe a bit hot and bothered after PE. And he will probably drink more in the summer.

Also bear in mind that a 4yo is probably getting subsidised milk mid-morning.

princesscc · 29/03/2007 09:38

lol @ nobboid, Oliveoil! That's gonna be my put down of the week! Yes, Ilovethis, you would think that it would cause more interruptions, but our school has been doing this for about 4 years and it seems to work. Although I have to be honest, my dd forgets her bottle most days, so I think the novelty of having a drink in the classroom may have worn off now.

At our school for snack time they are allowed to take water and a piece of fruit only. Also they each have a water bottle in the classroom which they have access to all day. However, if they have a packed lunch, they are allowed to bring in any drink they like to go with it. My dds are fine with water though and choose to have it with their school dinners.

SSShakeTheChi · 29/03/2007 09:41

Ah I see. All sounds very odd to me but then I live overseas and it is all very different here. Can't imagine a rule like that being introduced in our school TBH

Hulababy · 29/03/2007 09:43

DD's school has no access to juice at all throughout the day. All the children survive perfectly happily!

Snack time - they are given milk carton, and hve their brought in snack (fruit, veg, etc.)

Lunch time - all have to stay for school dinners; drink given is water

Class - can take in bottles of water only

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 29/03/2007 09:43

the woman is an idiot.

it's water ffs, no-one's said he can't have juice at break/lunchtime, if he's thirsty he will drink water. in fact if he's really thirsty water is the only thing that is really sufficient to quench thirst, because once you're actually thirsty it's too late and you're already starting to dehydrate.

Hassled · 29/03/2007 09:45

Twiglett - I'm the diluted juice cheat and firstly thank you for letting me know what the opposite of transparent is because it was really starting to bug me . You're absolutely right and I can see it would piss other parents off if they knew. My rationale has been better that I cheat than DS3 gets dehydrated, but he would drink water if desperate so stern words will be had over the holidays.

Hulababy · 29/03/2007 09:46

Article here about story

Twiglett · 29/03/2007 09:46

YAY HASSLED oops caps sorry

ScummyMummy · 29/03/2007 09:47

Sounds very ott. Surely there must be more to it? Some sort of history between the family and the school?

Hulababy · 29/03/2007 09:47

This is from the link:

"She says she will be forced to send both her son and daughter to a private school instead. "

LOL! DD is in private school and as described below, there she has NO access to juice all day!

Twiglett · 29/03/2007 09:48

may I suggest you blame the school

school has said you're only allowed to take water in because its better for you .. so here's your water

its school's rule and its quite right

school rules I said

oh be quiet

(or is that just my house? )

Enid · 29/03/2007 09:48

thats the best excuse I've heard yet

Hulababy · 29/03/2007 09:49

Hassled - if it is so diluted that it tastes like water, why not just start diluting it even more so that eventually it is just water. Would they even notice in the end?

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 29/03/2007 09:49

oh well if she can afford to send both of them there's no issue then really is there,

bonkers.

Enid · 29/03/2007 09:49

(the sending to private school one)

Ladymuck · 29/03/2007 09:50

So she'd opt for private school on the basis that they'll let her children have juice during the day?! Barmy. For £6k+ a year my children would definitely be drinking water!

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 29/03/2007 09:51

nope twig you're spot on. luckily my ds does drink water, but if not he would be firmly told.

PestoEasterMonster · 29/03/2007 09:52

I agree with Twiglett. That's what I do when they moan about homework/tables/spellings etc. I just say, the school says you have to do this, not me, get on with it!

And they do!!

Hassled · 29/03/2007 09:53

I'm considering changing my MN name to "Hassled, the Diluted Juice Cheat" - it has a certain ring about it, I feel.

Blu · 29/03/2007 09:57

Ssshake - in your country are children allowed to sit through class drinking juice, fizzy drinks, chocolate milk etc, then?

This woman is a complete idiot.

It's only recently that children had any drinks in the classroom. it used to be either water with school lunch, or maybe juice if you take packed, and the drinking fountain at play and between lessons.

I bet this woman herself did not sit in her school classroom drinking juice.

But, if she wishes her child's teeth to be bathed in sugar regularly throughout the day, and to pay £10,000 p.a for the privilige, then that is indeed her preogative. But she shouldn't expect sympathy!

What a loon! What is the world coming to?
