While discussion is almost over I have set up this thread incase anyone wants to post any comments to posts in the previous thread.

OP posts:

How on earth can anyone claim to know what went on in the hospice though? I cannot imagine for a moment that they wouldn't have administered pain relief if it had been required. That twitter link is just so depressing.

agelimit · 02/08/2017 08:58

11122 how did your Dad respond to the news in the end?

11122aa · 02/08/2017 11:05

agelimit - relatively calmly through he was blames Social Workers for the treatment delays.

The difference between the parents and the guardian position statements is startingly. The parents does seem to hold GOSH responsible whereas the guardian clearly shuts down any negligence claim.

I must say though Dr Hirano comes across as you would expect a researcher to in the Guardian statement and not at all how the parents one portrays him.

There is no way that the hospice would not have given pain relief if needed.

Its not quite the same but this is interesting as to the ramifications of posting stuff on social media (and if GOSH had not been a public hospital)

The effect social media had on a photographers business after they refused to pay and she sued them and they have to pay her.

Yesterday 18:32 TinselTwins

Just a suggestion, can we keep these threads going but change the title to populism: current issues & campaigns
Or something like that?

IF this "discussion" has to continue, then certainly changing the title would be advisable. I am finding this preoccupation a bit disquieting, frankly, and the title is inappropriate.

and how would peopl know what to look for

FlyingAnts · 02/08/2017 12:18

I find the discussion of the potential misuse of social media by aggrieved persons very useful.

And that link by Quartz is very interesting.

Salmotrutta · 02/08/2017 12:37

nina2b - I think a lot of us have been appalled at the reporting of this case and the, frankly ignorant, stances taken by people like Donald Trump and others.
I've also been horrified to learn (through these threads) that an awful lot of people who were part of the "campaigns" seemed to know nothing about the separation of law, government and institutions such as the NHS.
So these continued threads have thrown up real issues about public understanding (or lack of).

Salmotrutta · 02/08/2017 12:38

And meant to add that the above is why this case has caught many peoples' attention.

agelimit · 02/08/2017 12:42

nina why do you keep coming onto these threads to tell us how much you dislike them? I don't get why you can't just ignore, do you go on every topic you don't approve of to tell the posters that you don't like them?

The subject frequently moves far far away from that directly connected to GC if you cared to look.

Salmotrutta · 02/08/2017 12:50

Yes agelimit - it's the huge wider issues of reporting, children's rights, public understanding, ethics etc. that has interested me following on from this sad case.

Quartz2208 · 02/08/2017 12:58

It's about the appropriation of social media at the expense of facts that's interesting and this case is one where the legal system got involved because of it.

I agree though the lack of knowledge of how the British system works interesting and the way it works in other countries

But it also highlights how statements can be taken out of context and misconstrued. Newspapers are terrible for this doing a headline that whilst strictly speaking true does not reflect the situation. The daily mail have one at the moment about British passengers being delayed at EU airports, implying that it's picking on the brits. Whereas it's actually new security rules coming into play affecting everyone with an EU passport

The Charlie gard case was a perfect storm of a lot of these issues

Sostenueto · 02/08/2017 13:05

Ex CA followers have joined a fb group Alfie's army in their hundreds, but the poor woman whose fb it is has had to put up a notice saying that her child is NOT the one in a coma in hospital. He is a little 2 year old disabled boy who she is raising funds for. For goodness sake these followers are ridiculous.Shock

agelimit · 02/08/2017 13:07

Oh Sos what a nightmare!

GabsAlot · 02/08/2017 13:11

thyv all migratd to alfie evans its like their obseessd

poor pareents

Sostenueto · 02/08/2017 14:11

The father of the baby Alfie in hospital said he was frightened as he has no diagnosis that he will be switched off too. Apparent he has been in coma since December and they can't find out what is wrong with him except apparently he had a seizure. CA have promised to support him all the way. This was reported in the daily mirror. Feel sorry for the family, I really do!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/08/2017 14:16

Was it ever clarified what the issue was regarding the doctor who arrived (late) to last Wednesday's (?) court meeting? There was talk of him being an intensive care doctor, but then it seemed he was "just" a GP? How on earth did that happen?

I could be wrong, but didn't something happen about this when the judge suspended the court proceedings for a while so a private discussion could take place? One minute it was reported the "expert" was running late, then after a break he suddenly wasn't mentioned any more

Quartz2208 · 02/08/2017 14:17

But isn't that fear a symptom of not understanding the Charlie guard case. In that case he had a terminal illness and ventilation was merely keeping him alive. Until Alfie gets that prognosis the hospital will be working hard to figure it out

BubblesBuddy · 02/08/2017 15:09

This case will be forever known as the Gard case and it will be on the court and other records as that. It just cannot be anything else and the ramifications from it are very important. Hiding the name is besides the point when it was a case played out in the full glare of the public. Rightly or wrongly.

The transparency project summary is excellent. It was clear that the parents had a major divergence of opinion from everyone else about a number of things. However, others kept Charlie as the important person in this, the parents were really arguing from their position.

mikado1 · 02/08/2017 15:53

Thanks Looby

derxa · 02/08/2017 20:09

I beg you. Give this a rest.

agelimit · 02/08/2017 20:21

I received my Peter Pan mug which I have to say is quite lovely, very delicate. When my DT's were in GOSH, I don't remember there even being a shop there, well I was so distracted that I barely noticed a thing - nice to be able to support them in a little way. Hope some kind of normality has resumed for everyone there.

Quartz2208 · 02/08/2017 20:45

The thing is important legal/ethical/moral points often arise from tragic situations. Hills borough for example had a huge impact on English and Welsh law (one of which the bland case feeds directly into this case). Discussing the in and outs should stop but the social media implications and negligence claims should be discussed
