I read the news today and saw that Labour admitted they never costed this out, and don't know where the money will be found, so won't be doing this if elected. Hang on wasn't this the reason the young voted for them.

So Corbyn LIED.

Which newspaper? A Tory rag probably.

Sirzy · 09/07/2017 15:54

Because of course May have never lied has she... or back tracked on promises....

kittybiscuits · 09/07/2017 15:55

Bullshit

Spanneroo · 09/07/2017 15:57

The young aren't stupid enough (on the whole) to vote based on a single policy. There are other reasons that Corbyn won over younger voters.

Link?

Hear, hear

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/07/2017 16:01

link please

akkakk · 09/07/2017 16:02

Of course - sadly we seem to have politicians whose approach to elections is simply how do they get into power, rather than really thinking about what the country needs...

Foxley11 · 09/07/2017 16:03

Eh?

prh47bridge · 09/07/2017 17:06

Story is on the BBC website here. It relates to Corbyn's suggestion in an interview during the campaign that Labour would wipe out all existing student debt.

raspberrysuicide · 09/07/2017 17:07

He said he would look into it, it wasn't in the manifesto

PuckeredAhole · 09/07/2017 17:09

Wasn't this obvious to most sane people? You know, that there was no way we could afford to have no uni fees. Now all the Corbyn supporters have scurried away. Hmmmm....

originalbiglymavis · 09/07/2017 17:10

Politicians promise the earth pre-election. They all do. No surprise there. They they back-pedal and weasle out of their pledges.

mistlethrush · 09/07/2017 17:12

Why is this surprising (it wasn't in the manifesto anyway, but that's by the by) - surely you've worked out that politicians lie by now? Brexit promoters lied when they said it would be millions for the NHS every week - and admitted this the day after the vote. The Tories have 'found' money so they can buy DUP votes. And that's just recent blatant examples.

raspberrysuicide · 09/07/2017 17:13

Sorry posted too soon.
The Labour manifesto said it was going to scrap university tuition fees. Then at one point Jeremy Corbyn said that they would look into possibly look into writing off historic student debt. Of course most of those don't need to be paid back until you earn over a certain amount.
The BBC news item that is linked makes no sense whatsoever.

TeaChest100 · 09/07/2017 17:17

I'm pretty sure I heard something similar this morning on the Andrew marr show - labour spokesperson stating that they'd cost it out and do it if they could, i.e. clearly that it wasn't a promise.

She made their manifesto sound like a wish list. Whilst I don't expect a manifesto to be a guarantee I do expect it should be realistic and only contain policies that they are fairly confident will be affordable/achievable.

PineappleScrunchie · 09/07/2017 17:21

How've they worked that out though? Most of the student loan debt will be written off eventually anyway.

elephantpig · 09/07/2017 17:21

As a recent graduate my vote had nothing to do with the possibility of my student loans being wiped, but rather the policy that I felt would bring the best outcome to the highest number of people - and importantly, would give the highest 'baseline of living' to people with the current lowest standard of living. I know (from discussions) that friends in similar situations (recent graduates) also didn't vote based purely (or largely) on their student debt.

It does make me cross when politicians (esp Tories) seem to believe that people only ever vote in their own narrow self-interest.

(I didn't think cancelling historic student debt was in the manifesto anyway)

LapdanceShoeshine · 09/07/2017 17:28

But there's no reason why future student loans shouldn't be scrapped. Many countries manage it. UK student debt burden is now the worst in the world.

Valentine2 · 09/07/2017 17:28

Was it in the manifesto? Did you read the manifesto?
There is a magic money tree. It was always there.

LapdanceShoeshine · 09/07/2017 17:36

Manifesto said tuition fees would be abolished from 2018.

Whodoesthis17 · 09/07/2017 17:43

It was an Article in the Guardian about how it wasn't possible as Labour have no idea where the money would come from, but the paper has taken it down.

I'm young and I voted Tory, Corbyn can't be trusted to make a cup of tea!
