So says Jeremy, according to the BBC.
We need some emoticons for this, a daffodil, leek, thistle and shamrock probably...

You're contradicting yourself a bit there

How so? The world doesn't grind to a halt, and people might work more efficiently, not longer hours (which was my second point).

Bringmesunshite · 23/04/2017 08:05

Still waiting for the free trampoline I was promised at the referendum. All JC needs to do now is offer me a unicorn to go with it.

bluediamonds · 23/04/2017 08:06

HatHen, what tuition fee announcement is that?

TheMonkeyandthePlywoodViolin · 23/04/2017 08:06

Yes better that you get enormous cuts and a rise in food bank use.

TheMonkeyandthePlywoodViolin · 23/04/2017 08:07

The same article suggests the tories will.cap everyones fuel bills..including the wealthy who dont need it..but i dont see everyone whinging about that.

AuntieStella · 23/04/2017 08:10

I don't think it's the worst thing ever.

Just that putting more in spring is the wrong.

Lack of support for this particular policy isn't a frothing attack on the whole Labour manifesto.

meditrina · 23/04/2017 08:11

"The same article suggests the tories will.cap everyones fuel bills"

Than the article is wrong. The actual announcement is about those on the (expensive) standard variable rate. And is actually a nicked Miliband era Labour policy. It was welcomed by left-leaders back then...

Garnethair · 23/04/2017 08:14

Would have thought Corbyn would be keener on a bank holiday to celebrate Lenin's birthday.

TheMonkeyandthePlywoodViolin · 23/04/2017 08:16

I trust everyone on this thread will be insiting on working on the next Bank holiday and not sitting in garden enjoying the sun..

Penfold007 · 23/04/2017 08:20

What's the advantage of four extra bank holidays? Current legislation around annual leave says workers get a minimum of 28 days off but this can include bank holidays. Many employers only offer the 28 including BHs.

SexTrainGlue · 23/04/2017 08:22

"It rust everyone on this thread will be insiting on working on the next Bank holiday and not sitting in garden enjoying the sun.."

Why? Genuine question. As this seems a bit like straw man territory.

Being against adding 3more in the 3 months where there are already 4, or being against adding any at all, isn't the same as not valuing or enjoying the ones already in the calendar.

Headofthehive55 · 23/04/2017 08:22

Nightmare for some of us in the NHS. I work in a bit that doesn't open on bank hols.
In those weeks there is pressure to take a holiday day not on the bank hols but one of the other days that week. To balance the rota.
Less flex for me to choose and I might end up with a random Thursday off.

NoDramasPlease · 23/04/2017 08:25

Thing is, it wouldn't be four extra days off for most of us. For most workers bank holidays must be taken from their holiday allowance. So it just gives us less flexible holidays.

If they were to increase the minimum holiday allowance above 28 days, then that would be more time off work.

This^

In think people are missing the point. It wouldn't be 4 extra holidays, it would be 4 more days of annual allowance that are you are told when take and 4 less days you can choose when to take, if your work closes for bank holidays. If you ordinarily have to work BH then its 4 more days to find child care for and if you have school age kids you'll know BH are a nightmare to get childcare for, no holiday clubs etc.

Biker47 · 23/04/2017 08:28

Would rather have 4 days added to my leave to take at my discretion, rather than 4 days where everywhere is ram packed with people and the roads are as busy as a regular working day. I'd still have to cover them in some capacity anyways. But then again, I'd rather shit in my hand and clap than vote Labour, so all is well.

TheMonkeyandthePlywoodViolin · 23/04/2017 08:31

Oh how cruel of him

Bringmesunshite · 23/04/2017 08:32

Surprised at the saint's day connection. Thought he was an atheist.

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 23/04/2017 08:33

In theory, I love the idea.

In practice, it would cost the NHS a fortune - and local councils. It would mean two more days away from school at the run up to key exams and for parents with younger children it would mean finding childcare.

I don't think I agree with it, but I do like the principle. It's more the timings.

sheepflower · 23/04/2017 08:39

Seeing as a very high percentage of people are self employed these days, bank holidays are not really a bonus.

AnguaResurgam · 23/04/2017 08:39

If you have leave + BH, then it'll be a nice extra.
If you have leave inc BH, then you lose holiday flexibility

Not wild about that.

Also not wild about adding 3 more in spring - 7 BH in 3 months seems the wrong distribution.

Headofthehive55 · 23/04/2017 08:41

So people like the idea of having your timing of your holidays dictated? I like to choose!
It's not four extra, it's from your own allowance.

scaryclown · 23/04/2017 08:43

I actually think this would be very positive. The Easter bank holiday was wonderful for finding a lot of people ihadnt seen for a long time were all hanging loose over the same weekend. I thinks it can be good for society, and maybe give more people a chance to earn a modest premium too where employers are absolute cunts.

Headofthehive55 · 23/04/2017 10:08

And when you are waiting elective surgery, (which doesn't happen on bank hols) it's an extra day to wait....

alicemalice · 23/04/2017 10:13

I like the idea of more bank holidays.

But in the scheme of things, there's far too many other important issues to address. Hence it seems a trivial issue for Corbyn to take up airtime with.

georgie22 · 23/04/2017 10:15

This would just mean more pressure on already stretched NHS services and the financial impact of increased bank holiday pay for staff.

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 23/04/2017 10:25

I like bank holidays but not in Spring. June or September would be nice. Why do we have a Late May bank holiday anyway?
