Why is the UK such a bad place to be a child?

Unicef's survey of 21 industrialised countries looked at 40 indicators including family relationships, health and poverty and the UK came BOTTOM for the well-being of children. We are a country of relative wealth so why are we failing our children?

Yes but Mrs Spoon when you go to a bar in Spain the atmosphere is completely different. You could go in the afternoon and not find people drinking themselves into oblivion. Here bars are places people go to get drunk not to socialise.

And I am in Scotland too, it is UK wide I think. Did you find out where the customs officials were going?

Two, that's what I mean there is a nice family atmosphere in bars abroad, over here you wouldn't dare take your kids into most pubs even if it was allowed.

No idea where Customs were off to, I was a bit freaked.

ernest - I live in Somerset and yes. I've lived here on and off for most of my life. I have roots in the sense that I know the area very well but the town where we live atm is the kind of place where the majority of the population has been there since for ever! Which means that although they are friendly they don't need any more best friends... so all my good friends are newcomers. So my roots as such are not people but the place. Having said all that I find people round here in general very welcoming. The town has it's bad points (ask Peachy!!!) but all in all I'm happy here. So I think that you are right about 'roots' mattering.

I've often said to DH that I'd find emigrating easier than moving to a totally different part of the UK.
