article

I find the above incredibly sad - those poor little babies - would those parents have stood by and watched them die for the sake of their religeon??

I can't believe anyone would not want to do everything in their power to keep their child alive???

themildmanneredjanitor, I have copy pasted this plus scriptures:-

"4. Birthdays: The only two birthday celebrations spoken of in the Bible were held by persons who did not worship Jehovah. (Genesis 40:20-22 20 Now on the third day it turned out to be Phar´aoh?s birthday, and he proceeded to make a feast for all his servants and to lift up the head of the chief of the cupbearers and the head of the chief of the bakers in the midst of his servants. 21 Accordingly he returned the chief of the cupbearers to his post of cupbearer, and he continued to give the cup into Phar´aoh?s hand. 22 But the chief of the bakers he hung up, just as Joseph had given them the interpretation; Mark 6:21, 22, 24-27 21 But a convenient day came along when Herod spread an evening meal on his birthday for his top-ranking men and the military commanders and the foremost ones of Gal´i·lee. 22 And the daughter of this very He·ro´di·as came in and danced and pleased Herod and those reclining with him. The king said to the maiden: ?Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.? 24 And she went out and said to her mother: ?What should I ask for?? She said: ?The head of John the baptizer.? 25 Immediately she went in with haste to the king and made her request, saying: ?I want you to give me right away on a platter the head of John the Baptist.? 26 Although he became deeply grieved, yet the king did not want to disregard her, in view of the oaths and those reclining at the table. 27 So the king immediately dispatched a body guardsman and commanded him to bring his head. And he went off and beheaded him in the prison) The early Christians did not celebrate birthdays. The custom of celebrating birthdays comes from ancient false religions. True Christians give gifts and have good times together at other times during the year."

We look to Jesus as an example and Jesus never specifically asked us in the Bible to celebrate his birthday.

True but it is notable that the birthdays that are recorded in the Bible are not pleasing (for want of a better word) occasions and if birthday celebrations were important then you would think that birthday celebrations of Jesus and his disciples would be recorded for us.

For the record Jehovah's Witness children do not miss out, most parents regularly host parties for their children and surprise gifts are often given (I have a couple lurking in my cupboard for my DSs at the moment, just waiting for the right moment).

No, that would be sending out a confusing message to my children.

No prob.

peanutbutterkid · 25/02/2007 04:52

Completely irrelevant, but since thread has descended to chat level...

My male cousin married a devout JW, he converted and they used to do the door-to-door thing. He barely spoke to family for years, refused to come to any family celebrations.

Then they decided to ease up on being JWs, but still didn't visit for Christmas (went to Las Vegas, instead).

Then they split up. She raided their joint bank account and spent it all on a boob job (!).

One day I hope to meet a nice and sensible practicing JW person.

Spannapiana · 25/02/2007 05:01

Please don't, go and make a pumpkin pie, he'll be sorry and she'll love you forever xxx
