Sorry - can't link, but there's an article on the Independent website. The over processed palm oil is apparently carcinogenic.

Blimey!

Palm oil is in an awful lot of things, not just Nutella...

JaxingJump · 12/01/2017 21:47

And there are very good environmental reasons also for boycotting products that use palm oil. I do and this news just reinforces my resolve to avoid products with palm oil.

fueledbybacon · 12/01/2017 21:48

That should read SUGAR causes cancer.

Ilovecaindingle · 12/01/2017 21:50

If I don't make it through the night - tell my kids I Ioved them....

GinIsIn · 12/01/2017 21:50

Pretty much everything gives us cancer, apparently.... 🙄www.anorak.co.uk/288298/keyposts/the-daily-mails-list-of-things-that-give-you-cancer-from-a-to-z.html/

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 12/01/2017 21:53

The amount of palm oil concerns me.

And an Aussie friend of mine told me about health concerns ages ago. I think it's been more talked about Down Under.

ElfOnMyShelf · 12/01/2017 21:55

It's to do with the carcinogenics released at high heat in palm oil. (Not the sugar, but some would argue the weight of evidence points that way).
It's the same as everything it's to do with the quantity you eat.

I buy Sainsbury's as I can't remember if it hasn't got it in or it's got their sustainable label.

I really try to avoid the stuff from a sustainability point.

Hi all

Ferrero have been in touch and asked us to post this on their behalf:

"The health and safety of consumers is an absolute and first priority for Ferrero and we confirm that Ferrero products are safe. EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has analyzed the presence of contaminants in a large number of products and oils stating that the presence of contaminants depends on the oils and fats used as well as the processes they are subjected to.

It is for this reason that Ferrero carefully selects quality raw materials and applies specific industrial processes that limit their presence to minimum levels, fully in line with the parameters defined by the EFSA. In addition, our Quality teams constantly monitor such factors and guarantee the food safety of our products to the consumer."

RortyCrankle · 13/01/2017 12:53

I was about to say one thing less to worry about as I don't eat it but I see for those who do, Ferraro has posted via MNHQ to put your minds at rest.

Since palm oil is no. 2 on the list of ingredients after sugar and I tend to avoid items containing palm oil, it's unlikely I will start eating it any time soon.

AltheaThoon · 14/01/2017 08:18

I'm currently on a dairy free diet for the sake of my dairy-intolerant toddler whom I'm still bf. This concerns me because so much of the dairy free foods contain palm oil; it seems to be the standard replacement for dairy. So both he and myself are consuming more than we should. Something else to add to my already out of control anxiety!

Glamorousglitter · 14/01/2017 08:49

I ve just learned this and have cut down and avoided palm oil in the family diet - will continue. Sadly the Nutella went in the bin but we found much nicer chocolate and spreads and made our own too without the same levels of sugar and palm oil.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 14/01/2017 09:13

Makes me laugh the Nutella commercial, they show the ingredients pouring into the jar, ooh all the lovely milk and chocolate, err no, it's filled with sugar and oil, stop the BS FGS.

megletthesecond · 14/01/2017 09:19

I've been trying to cut down on palm oil for the orangutans sake. It means an awful lot of home cooking.

RubyGoat · 14/01/2017 09:24

"All the lovely milk & chocolate"... well there's not much chocolate in it. Chocolate spread was created as a way to make the very meagre amount of cocoa powder available, go a long way, during the war.

www.nutella.com/en/uk/history

And I don't eat palm oil any more.

Gooseberryfools · 14/01/2017 09:25

What's palm oil generally in?

Gooseberryfools · 14/01/2017 09:26

I home cook mostly

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 14/01/2017 09:31

I love Nutella. By the spoonful. Can't see me stopping that any time soon Grin

Gooseberryfools · 14/01/2017 09:35

Just read that Waitrose dark chocolate spread is palm oil free

www.ethicalconsumer.org/shoppingethically/palmoilfreelist.aspx

RubyGoat · 14/01/2017 09:42

Thanks for that link, Gooseberryfools.

megletthesecond · 15/01/2017 14:14

Thanks goose.

helpimitchy · 16/01/2017 20:51

Palm oil seems to be in everything now Sad It makes me feel very sick. It takes a concerted effort to avoid it completely, although it is mainly in cheaper, heavily processed things.

Artandco · 16/01/2017 20:54

Biona range is also palm oil free

ZaraW · 18/01/2017 09:11

I never use Palm oil. After visiting Borneo and seeing miles and miles of never ending Palm plantations is so disheartening. Unfortunately, they are killing their wildlife and if they don't have that there's not much of a tourist industry left.

PetalMettle · 18/01/2017 09:16

What surprises me is how little attention has been pAid to formula milk which contains palm oil

BitOutOfPractice · 18/01/2017 09:21

Can anyone tell me, is palm oil always listed as palm oil in the ingredients? Or is it called different things?
