TrinityRhino · 15/02/2007 20:50

me too cod

lulumama · 15/02/2007 20:50

me three awful

ILoveBeingWelshBoris · 15/02/2007 20:50

The two most recent ones, the toddler murdered in her bed and the video one have left me feeling ill.

Am never reading another in the news thread, would rather live with head in sand

oliveoil · 15/02/2007 20:51

I opened the thread but didn't open the link.

The posts were bad enough.

MegaLegs · 15/02/2007 20:52

I avoid them too - have managed to avoid the coverage in rl too, just too upsetting.

Carmenere · 15/02/2007 20:52

I agree, I almost wish there was a without 'In the News' option. Only that I quite like news in general, I just can't bear the bloody child murders and general abuse

MegaLegs · 15/02/2007 20:54

There was a lot of debate about this a few months back and there was a good spell where people semd to avoid upsetting stuff but it's creeping back.

tortoiseSHELL · 15/02/2007 20:57

Sorry, I started the toddlers, one and wish I hadn't, have been feeling bad all evening about it, don't normally 'do' ghoulish news stories. I'm really sorry if anyone was upset. I've asked for it to be deleted, because I don't think it's a nice story to read.

Sorry people!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 15/02/2007 20:58

Oh i know.

Same here. I feel utterly helpless as well as shocked, and angry and upset.

i mean, those poor children dont stand a chance do they?

MegaLegs · 15/02/2007 21:01

It's difficult tortoise, atleast you didn't go for the schocker tabloidy thread title style that posters have done in the past, threads titles that you get confronted with everytime you click active convos.
These stories effect us all and many people deal with it by discussing it and hearing other peoples' reactions. I understand why they get posted.

MegaLegs · 15/02/2007 21:02

My typing is appalling - a long day and a large drink - sorry.

tortoiseSHELL · 15/02/2007 21:04

I do feel really bad about it, and I hope they delete it. I'm really really really sorry anyone who was upset.

MegaLegs · 15/02/2007 21:06

Don't feel bad ts.

divamumplus · 15/02/2007 21:19

no tortoise, ppl should not read if they are seriously easily upsets. i get upset, too. but not some1 posted here, because something like this happens.

dont feel bad , tortoise.

MrsJohnCusack · 15/02/2007 21:39

thing is, once I see them, I just can't NOT look, however much I know I shouldn't
I actually cried for quite a long time last night over one recent story, am 39 weeks pregnant and can't sleep, plus have a 2 year old. Couldn't stop thinking about it.
I wish I could select 'without in the news too'.

but don't feel bad tortoise.
it's the ones where there's no comment or discussion, just 'look at that this really depressing awful news story' with a link no accompanying comment or invitation to discussion that bug me (I know we've discussed this before). I mean I can see the headlines on the BBC website if I want to I don't need them stuffed down my throat on here as well...

MrsJohnCusack · 15/02/2007 21:40

god what happened to my grammer? think it just about makes sense....

tortoiseSHELL · 15/02/2007 21:48

That totally makes sense, and I agree with you! Completely.

madamez · 15/02/2007 22:11

I think everyone's got to take responsibility for their own peace of mind and not read stuff that looks upsetting, if easily upset. Because sometimes it's important that things get discussed, especially when it's the usual tabloid crap about some or other marginalised group, and someone's able to point out either the holes in the story as reported or indeed some facts which change the way one might think about the subject.
It's always a bad idea to suppress discussion or expression on the grounds that someone, somewhere, might be upset by it. For one thing, there are some people who some times deserve to be upset.

MrsJohnCusack · 15/02/2007 22:28

but my point is they DON'T actually get discussed on here quite often
someone posts a link with no invitation to any sort of discussion and then everyone posts 'how sad' and 'string 'em all up' etc and that's the extent of it - not exactly very illuminating. So I'm not sure what the point is most of the time, apart from spreading doom and gloom

I don't mind at all when it's discussed sensibly - and when the thread poster has made an effort to make the title a bit more descriptive than 'awful news story - look here' or 'how sad' BUT also without including unnecesary upsetting details that pop up in your face every time you look at active convos. Of course we should all take responsiblity for not looking at things we know we'll find upsetting, but it's bloody hard sometimes.

but we've been here before, and it didn't come to anything

paulaplumpbottom · 15/02/2007 23:04

I think people should be able to post whatever it is that is interesting to them or have caught their eye. I understand you point though about how some of the grimmer things aren't discussed. There are lots of things that are posted that don't encourage discussion just sadness.
