Gove stands for Conservative leadership

Very good news. He has principles and integrity, a great mind, a great sense of humour as well as having conservative principles and progressive ones. I think he will win.

Murdoch and Dacre will probably back him.

I personally think Gove knows where Boris hid the bodies Grin

Zampa · 30/06/2016 17:44

Theresa May was responsible for those awful "go home" vans. She wants to abolish the Human Rights Act. She's diluted protection for victims of domestic abuse. She's vile.

Gove on the other hand is just incompetent.

raisedbyguineapigs · 30/06/2016 17:45

Im not in the least bit surprised that Boris has ruled himself out. He ran a campaign for leave, that he didn't really believe in, thinking he'd lose and never have to face the consequences of his reckless attempt to undermine the prime Minister and take his job. Now, faced with the prospect of being the PM in charge when the whole thing falls apart, a recession in this country and a nightmare negotiation with Europe, in which he will get nothing like what he promised, he has bailed. Idiot. I hope the party remember his backstabbing cynicism the next time the Tory leadership job comes up.

HelpfulChap · 30/06/2016 17:45

I think May will win the leadership contest with Leadsom likely to be Chancellor.

Good team I think.

HelpfulChap · 30/06/2016 17:47

Although dubious tax (inheritance) affairs and party contributions may hurt Leadsom.

Mistigri · 30/06/2016 17:49

Amused to see the usual leave suspects supporting Gove.

Did you read the bit of his speech about, you know, actually leaving the EU? He won't be "hurried or hassled" into it.

He isn't going to do it. He's not your man.

HelpfulChap · 30/06/2016 17:56

I still have an inkling that after article 50 is declared (still 100% not convinced even that will happen) and PM May comes to some sort of Leave a agreement she will come back to the electorate for 'approval' via a referendum or GE.

Silvertap · 30/06/2016 18:12

I quite like Theresa May's speech quoted above.

She comes across as someone who genuinely believes what she says and tries to make the world a better place.

Is this the same man who was always causing chaos in schools? (I'm Scottish)

derxa · 30/06/2016 18:27

Is this the same man who was always causing chaos in schools? (I'm Scottish) Yes it is. I'm also Scottish but taught in English schools.
He left me completely scunnered.

ChrissyHynde · 30/06/2016 18:33

Couldn't agree more raisedbyguineapigs.

She's diluted protection for victims of domestic abuse

I'm not entirely sure in what way Theresa May has done that. She strengthened the law against abuse, introducing a new offence of "coercive and controlling behaviour". She has also criticised police attitudes to domestic abuse. She has made dealing with violence against women a high priority, including failures to investigate rape.

Regarding the Human Rights Act she seems to have moved away from her previous position today, saying that she would not take the UK out of the ECHR.

Is this the same man who was always causing chaos in schools?

There are, of course, differing views on this. Some were very unhappy with his changes. Others, including some teachers, thought Gove was doing the right thing. However, he has a reputation as someone who could have an argument if he was alone in a locked room. His actions today will have alienated a lot of Boris' supporters. I doubt he will win the Conservative leadership. He may not even make the final two. I wouldn't be overly surprised if that turns out to be May and Leadsom.

TheCrowFromBelow · 30/06/2016 19:54

Gove is an utter twat who, by his own admission, does not have the skills to be PM.
I sense the Hand of Vine in his decision and she's bloody awful too.
May is the best of that bunch IMO but I'm not a story and feel quite dejected at the moment.

tinymeteor · 30/06/2016 19:58

Gove is barmy. A swivel eyed crusader with no listening skills.

Boris is an egomaniac with no actual qualifications for the job. He was used by Murdoch to deliver the referendum and has now been dumped.

May is just a Tory. She'll do.

prh47bridge · 01/07/2016 00:05

Thank you Zampa. One minor problem with that story. It is rubbish. You should not believe everything you read in the press. Theresa May did NOT scrap Domestic Violence Protection Orders. She introduced a pilot of these orders in Greater Manchester, West Mercia and Wiltshire from June 2011 to ensure they were working as intended. The pilot was supposed to run until June 2012 but it was subsequently extended. The pilot ended when DVPOs were introduced nationally in March 2014. I therefore stand by my view that Theresa May has NOT diluted protection for victims of domestic violence.

claig · 01/07/2016 00:09

The Daily Mail and Dacre have spoken. They have backed Theresa May, so I think it is probably all over and that Theresa May will now win.

JudyCoolibar · 01/07/2016 00:17

The Conservatives made a deliberate decision to keep Gove away from the media at the last election because they knew he was electoral poison. Why on earth would they risk having him front up any future campaign?

JudyCoolibar · 01/07/2016 00:26

May does have a somewhat flexible approach to the truth. For instance:

claig · 01/07/2016 00:28

I like Gove, lots of real conservatives like him, but lots of other voters are not that keen on him.

I think that Gove may not really want the leadership even now. I think that Dacre didn't want Boris and Gove has removed Boris and Dacre has now immediately backed May, which makes me think he preferred May all along.

Gove may even step down and let May run unchallenged by him. The BBC on Newsnight were trying to put the message out that maybe it would be better and quicker and easier if there was no real election and that everyone anointed May.

PurpleHebe · 01/07/2016 00:40

Hahaha, Claig, guess you don't have any children at school then?

claig · 01/07/2016 00:50

I do and I think Gove improved standards. I think it had to be done. Under Gordon Brown, grades just got higher and higher because exams got easier.

I have just seen that it is a Mark Steel article. He is brilliantly funny so I think it will be good.
