Oh, that's horrible.

The report says he opened fire with a Kalashnikov before detonation.

EdithWeston · 28/06/2016 22:01

Lead story on the ITV news.

Awful Sad

giraffesCantReachTheirToes · 28/06/2016 22:07

Utterly awful

EdithWeston · 28/06/2016 23:32

The number who died has risen to 28, with about 60 injured. It's being described as a major coordinated attack

Yes and with all the Referendum stuff going on terrorists will see this as a
good chance to cause more havoc Sad but not surprised

jacksoncannery · 29/06/2016 06:33

Went to bed early and missed this. Utterly horrific.

StealthPolarBear · 29/06/2016 06:35

I briefly saw this last night. I didn't realise there were two of them. Awful.

StealthPolarBear · 29/06/2016 06:36

At least 36 dead now

EdithWeston · 29/06/2016 06:50

Yes, I've woken up to the news of the increasing death toll and number of casualties - now estimated to be about 140.

Fairylea · 29/06/2016 06:59

There doesn't seem to be as much coverage and outpouring of emotion about this attack compared to the recent ones in Paris etc. I think it's very scary that we are becoming more desensitised to these things.

P1nkP0ppy · 29/06/2016 07:06

Dd flies via Istabul for her job, thank heavens she was there for an early flight yesterday and is safely home. We're both very shocked, she said it was a matter of time when we last spoke.
Utterly horrific, those poor, poor people.

Helmetbymidnight · 29/06/2016 07:09

Terrible news.

meditrina · 29/06/2016 07:15

Yes, to desensitisation.

The coverage of attacks in huge swathes of the world is much lower than in others. There have been multiple terrorist atttacks in Nigeria, Afganistan, Egypt, Pakistan, Iraq and Turkey itself just in the first six months of this year.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 29/06/2016 07:51

Yes, I don't think it's just desensitisation. Or at least it is but we are more desensitised to it in places where we assume it happens lots.

This is the 4th attack in Istanbul this year I think.

meditrina · 29/06/2016 07:56

Though as they pointed out, this could have happened at any major airport.

This one did have screening for foot passengers on the way into the terminal buildings (before they go through check in and full security for airside access) but it's less clear about cars. But even those partial level of checks are more than happen in many airports.

And I suppose that wherever your outer perimeter is, the risks will remain.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 29/06/2016 08:02

There isn't screening for cars, or at least I don't remember ever having been screened. But I think you are right about just moving the place of the attack to the outer perimeter wherever you place it.

meditrina · 29/06/2016 08:07

BBC correspondent has just said that it is a major, co-ordinated attack to get round the level of security measures around the airport.

Turkish authorities said they believe it was Da'esh.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 29/06/2016 08:27

That seemed to be what they were hinting at last night, while not completely ruling out other groups. They sound a bit more clear on that this morning.

areyoubeingserviced · 29/06/2016 08:34

I am surprised that this happened at the airport.
I have been to Istanbul several times and bags are checked as you enter the airport.
It's sad , Istanbul is a wonderful place to visit

Cathaka15 · 29/06/2016 08:39

This is very sad but not surprising. Also Turkey joining of the eu was my main reason to vote leave. That country is spewing out so many terrorists it's scary. I feel sorry for the people of turkey. Their government is evil.

Nannawifeofbaldr · 29/06/2016 08:45

This is very shocking. I've travelled through Ataturk hundreds of times with work. I always felt that the security there was very high.

Those poor people.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 29/06/2016 09:46

This is very sad but not surprising. Also Turkey joining of the eu was my main reason to vote leave.

Really? You think now is an appropriate time to bring that up?

meditrina · 29/06/2016 09:49

Some people can't help but see everything through referendum tinted lenses atm Rafa and with

"Yes and with all the Referendum stuff going on terrorists will see this as a
good chance to cause more havoc Sad but not surprised"

as the second post on the thread, it's not surprising that others read that as carte blanche to continue.
