Women's safety in Europe after Cologne

DavidTCDaviesMP · 08/02/2016 09:38

I have been invited onto Mumsnet to discuss the situation for women in Europe following the attacks in Cologne, and the challenge we face in Europe in trying to help millions of mainly young men, who are arriving in Europe from cultures which treat women very differently. I believe this is an issue which needs open discussion by political leaders yet is swept under the carpet. David Davies MP

fighting between german men and migrants at cologne carnival as a migrant groped a women.

The violent incident, which included three people being hospitalised, ended this year's Cologne Carnival, which police have now confirmed resulted in more crimes - including those of a sexual nature - despite the fact there were less people and a greater police presence.

Finally a partial description of the Colne rapists, not that the media are publishing them

Not sure if anyone has already raised this, but what about the Ex-Muslim Council of Great Britain? They are a really impressive organization of pro-secular ex-Muslims (apostates!), many of whom are feminist, including this woman who is giving a talk in London soon (that I shall try to attend if I can get childcare): ex-muslim.org.uk/2016/01/evening-with-ex-muslim-feminist-halima-begum-central-london/

You'll see from their website that they also have partner organizations in other European countries.

LumelaMme · 10/02/2016 20:15

That sounds very interesting, Jo. Definitely one worth following up.

JoMackl · 10/02/2016 20:40

If I'm able to go, I'll try to raise awareness of the petition with the speaker/ organisers, and report back to you all.

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 10/02/2016 21:17

Wow, very interesting Jo! Thanks.

This is a quote from the recent Keighly sex grooming trial that gave 143 years to several men from Bangladesh/Pakistan origins. The local councillor, Zafar Ali, said: "It takes two to tango .....there is some feeling that the victim had a part to play." The victim was 13. This type of attitude is unassailable and cannot be expunged.

here we go again

posted on the other thread too, the boy was not a child after all. over 18.

Mistigri · 12/02/2016 11:52

Even that Mail article acknowledges that assessing the age of adolescents is very subject to error, and that several expert opinions will be required. He may or may not be 15.

LumelaMme · 12/02/2016 12:46

I know no one on here has the slightest interest in facts or evidence
Any chance of you retracting your earlier slur, Misti?

I think you should, really. I reckon I have shown myself VERY invested in facts and evidence. And I'm not the only one, either.

sportinguista · 12/02/2016 14:13

In terms of age I would say he looks in fact much older than my DSS who is 18, much more built etc. Some 15 year olds are very well developed but few have the same muscle bulk as say a 20-22 year old. Although some 20's men can be very weedy also! I suspect the Swedish authorities will do all they can to assess the truth of it however.

There does appear to be evidence that many men are trying to apply for asylum as minors, which does pose significant safeguarding issues when they are placed in acommodation/schools for those under 17. In this case (if he is over 18) it has put both the staff of that acommodation and the children that are genuinely under 18 at significant risk as he not only had psychological issues which he was dealing with, he also had superior physique with which to cause harm.

I don't know the answers to this but where there is some doubt there may need to be separate acommodation for those who have a query over their age so they are not placed with those clearly under 17. It is difficult as verification of any detail may be hard to obtain, even correct names etc.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/02/2016 14:22

Given the reported difference in sentencing depending on age, I very much doubt the Somali male will be co-operating with attempts to prove his real age ...

emilybohemia · 13/02/2016 02:35

Britt, you've ommitted a significant part of what he said, he made his disapproval of those attitudes plain,

‘It is important to be aware that, sadly, a small number of people within the Muslim community do take the view that the victim is partly to blame. They believe it takes two to tango. They must be confronted about their abhorrent views.’

Mistigri · 13/02/2016 08:17

Emily posted that the largest foreign group in British prisons is Polish people. She got accused of making it up, when a few seconds on Google would turn up Daily Mail articles and UK prison service links supporting her assertion. That's what I mean by lack of respect for facts - you're only interested in facts that support your narrative.

Similarly, AMouse wrote that the Somali refugee who murdered the Swedish social worker was over 18 - and no (except me) pulled her up on it, when even the Mail article she linked to acknowledges that in the absence of documentary evidence it is impossible to establish age with any certainty.

januarybrown1998 · 13/02/2016 08:37

This makes heartening reading

LumelaMme · 13/02/2016 08:46

misti: that Poles are the largest foreign-born prison population in the UK is is not actually the point: what's relevant is the proportion of Poles banged up. I would have thought so, anyway.

I haven't read the Mail article on the child/adult alleged murderer: I haven't time to now so I'm not going to comment. I might later, but I'm out all day.

As for interest in the facts, emily has shown a dazzling lack of it. She rambles on endlessly about Muslims, whilst admitting that she knows precious little about Islam. When I post helpful links to a major survey of Muslim attitudes, she elects to ignore them.

It's amazing: emily produced no source for her Poles post, yet if one of us does that, it's all 'Facts! Links! How can you SAY that?' I think posters were just returning the compliment... She was asked for proof, not told she was making it up, and then a few posts later sporting said she was right in her assertion.

I think your the one only interested in the facts that support your narrative.

Moreshabbythanchic · 13/02/2016 09:03

Excellent article January. We need more, a lot more, women of influence to accept and speak out about this problem. We need less women who are accepting and trying to defend this behaviour.

CatchAPlaneToBarcelona · 13/02/2016 09:58

Lumela I agree. Numbers are always irrelevant, it's proportions and percentages that matter.

CatchAPlaneToBarcelona · 13/02/2016 10:12

january as much as I dislike the tub-thumping and the whipping up of fear that any DM report reeks of, I cannot often argue with the truth in much of its content.

I am genuinely scared for the future of Europe over the next ten to 15 years. I believe that if we continue to be ignored, dismissed and sold down the river by an increasingly spineless and clueless left wing then the far right will seize upon that, garner support from those who feel let down and run with it, and there will be horrible, horrible consequences.

I really, really hope we don't get to a point where we have to choose between backing horrible bigoted fascists who will stand up for the rights of women (ironically) and backing decent well-meaning liberals who (ironically) won't.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 13/02/2016 10:30

Nationalities inside prisons is a bit of a red herring considering how many British passports have been doled out.

CatchAPlaneToBarcelona · 13/02/2016 10:55

But there must be a further statistic by ethnicity or whether you were born in the UK.

It's just not PC to make it public.

CatchAPlaneToBarcelona · 13/02/2016 11:00

And of course it is acknowledged that children of immigrants are more likely (in the first generation or two) at least to suffer social, educational and economic disadvantage anyway, which always gives them a higher chance of ending up in jail so it isn't an easy task trying to extrapolate anything very telling from those figures. But nevertheless I bet it would throw up some interesting results.

LumelaMme · 13/02/2016 11:51

I'm reading Nick Cohen's book What's Left at the moment. It's very interesting on how much of the Left, following the collapse of the Soviet empire, still wanted to oppose western liberal democracy so anyone who opposed it, they supported, including religious fanatics they would otherwise have condemned as fascists.
