In light of the recent murders in Suffolk, isn't there now a case for providing vulnerable addicts with free drugs until they can be treated?

The five murdered women were working as prostitutes. If newspaper reports are accurate, they were all heroin/crack cocaine users. By working to fund their habits they are at risk daily. Also, addicts who repeatedly shoplift and end up in prison must cost more to keep in prison than to treat with controlled doses of drugs in the community.

I think these people are beyond the 'Just Say No' campaigns reach. As addicts, they will always put themselves (and others, in many cases) at risk to get the funds to buy drugs.

Any thoughts?

pixiefish - as said before I am sad to hear of your troubles it sounds bad..
i dont advocate FREE anything just safe clean access; if people could access drugs for similar price of alcohol then junkies wouldn't be doing this to your or anyonelses property..its the high inflated prices charged by dealers imo praying on the very nature of addiction..
anyhow, feel i've said all this more that a few times and just feel this system we have doesn't work for addict or law abiding bod and we should try and think how our laws can best serve all of society..

Pixiefish, I am sorry about the nightmare you are living currently and I can quite understand your fury and despair.

I do believe that if the drugs problem in this country was addressed the crime rate would fall dramatically. I do believe that the stats are something like 10% offenders (drug related) commit 50% of crime

All I meant is that there are people, hard working law abiding citizens who can't afford meds, a wheelchair, they have to wait years for surgerys, surely we should be focused on dealing with these people first before we start paying for people use.
