Story here . What I find funny is reading the letter page. One of the reasons given for leaving is because of the amount of immigration to this country.

So when they move to another country, don't they too become immigrants? I also hope that they plan to integrate into their new country by observing their culture and learning the language, if necessary, rather than creating Little England microcosms in their new country.

discuss what you wish, just be very careful when you discuss it with me

Yes I use Maori idioms, sing Maori songs and use Maori greetings.

I don't wear jandals though.

heavenlyghosty · 14/12/2006 00:04

Speedy, really, you know nothing about individual people's circumstances of moving to where they have gone.
Like in Aus, in NZ you can't go wading into 'indigenous' cultures (not that there IS an indigenous culture in NZ - Did you know that Maori are not indigenous to NZ? Put that in your pipe etc). There are a lot of rules and much protocol to go and visit a Marae ... and tbh I would get my head kicked in if I turned up at a Marae in South Auckland with a "What Oh, I'd like to visit and learn about you now please, and can I have one of those wonderful tattoos?"
I studied British Colonisation and Decolonisation for part of my History degree. Unless you have studied the intricacies of the time and how countries today are desperately trying to put things right somehow today you don't know what you are talking about.
The British did it to Australia and New Zealand, the governments of those countries work very hard to make things so that EVERYONE is happy ... it is an impossible task.
Alternatively, you could have countries that were dropped in the shit when the British left and are now in a permanent state of Civil War and corruption (Pick an African nation) or perhaps, you can have South Africa, where the back lash is so that many many many white SAfricans are leaving as their prospects there are now virtually nil.
The British Empire has a lot to answer for, but our generation can not be blamed for what our ancestors did .... the Americans did it to the Native American Tribes of the USA, the Spanish and Portuguese did it to South America too.
Most of these countries are trying to put it right somehow ... but it won't happen overnight ...
Being open to immigrants and welcoming other cultures into a country is the way forward IMO .... in order to be a part of this small world we now live in, people have to be open minded.
It is people like us 'immigrants' here, who move to new places, with open eyes and hearts, educate ourselves about our new homes and neighbours, that allow countries like NZ and Australia to be the fantastic places they are ...
NZ and Australia have so many cultures in one melting pot ... I can walk down the street here and see happy, healthy, prosperous people - all from different racial backgrounds ... Maori, European, Samoan, Fijian, Tongan, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Malaysian, Indian, Taiwanese, South African, the list is endless ...
This is what makes these countries special ... the aim of most decent kiwis is to have One Nation ....
I wish the UK was more like that really, and that is one reason why I left ...

'Also, who is making money from selling alcohol to the Aborigines because I bet it is not their community'

& you would do what? tell them they can't have iot?

Aboriginal: Your best flagon of of cheep wine please Mr shopkeeper sir

Mr Shopkeeper: Sorry Sir, No sir, I feel selling you alcohol would be detremental to your community & relations between myself & your community. I feel you should invest your money elsewhere

A: Oh, OK sir, how kind of you to have my communities wellfare at heart, you are a lovely man

SK: Thank you kind sir, have a good day

How sweet!! If very very untrue!

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 14/12/2006 00:11

oh well looks like most people on here HAVE thought about what they're doing then eh? - judging by some v.good and thoughtful posts. Surely a good thing. To be fair I'm assuming speedymama wasn't actually aiming her comments specifically at the people on this thread.

we've always used Maori idoms/songs/lullabies/stories in my family, even when we were in the UK.

sunnywong · 14/12/2006 00:11

and pmsl at sandcastles' cheery little bottle shop scenario

heavenlyghosty · 14/12/2006 00:24

Oh stop it all of you

I am a firm believer in Global Citizenship ... I have to be, being born in South Africa of British parents, brought up in Spain and Holland, educated at an English university, married to a New Zealander and now planning a move to Australia ...

I am an immigrant several times over .... I make it my job to learn about the country I live in ... at the same time I feel my family and I have much to offer wherever we may end up.

welliemum · 14/12/2006 00:46

Similarly, ghosty.

Oh, and in case anyone thinks I'm being rude about kiwi accents, my own accent is so ludicrously variable (from lots of moving around) that I feel I can enjoy other people's with impunity.

My children will have NZ accents and I think that's pretty cool.
