Here . Good old Times. Now who is Janice Turner? What is her MN nickname???

OP posts:
tamum · 02/12/2006 11:02

I know who she is but presumably she wants to keep her anonymity. Quite easy to spot the memorable phrases on here and in the Times once you know though! Really good article, I think.

zippitippitoes · 02/12/2006 11:07

love "local site for local people"

we have a shop at the back of us which is next to another shop owned by the same people the hardware and everything you could imagine shop often has anote on the door saying, ask next door

when we first moved here dp and ds went to get some screws etc wnent into the grocers and asked if he could buy something from next dootr and the bloke looked at him suspicisiously ans=d said 'are you local'

dp amd ds still fall about if we need anything..from the 'local shop'

CatBert · 02/12/2006 11:07

We'll have to have a new topic... "Parliament of Mumsnet"... Where the MN politicians propose new bills for our worthy consideration.

Now if THAT doesn't kick off...

JinglePrunes · 02/12/2006 11:11

I just had a look at netmums
It look v like mumsnet tbh
Different format, same stuff.

JanH · 02/12/2006 11:15

"Netmums is a unique local network for mums with a wealth of information and advice on being a mum or dad in your home town."

UnquietDad · 02/12/2006 11:18

'A friend has a theory about online chat rooms: she believes the men who post on talkboards are mostly those who feel unheard in real life. Perhaps they are shy, frustrated, underachieving, unfortunate-looking, solitary. The internet gives them a voice and a new, confident identity. But most regular guys would regard it as geeky, time-wasting and sad. Forums on dad websites are seldom used and topics never range beyond gadgets, sex and ?how I?ll wreak revenge on my bitch of an ex?.'

Janice's "friend" can shove her opinions where the sun don't shine.

JanH · 02/12/2006 11:19

And more...

"Netmums is a local network. Whether you're looking for a local parent and toddler group, pre-school or childcare; are desperate for somewhere new to take the kids; or would like to make some new friends in your area, netmums has the answer.

There is information on local places to visit and play centres, family-friendly restaurants and local clubs and classes... ballet, football, tennis.... And the 'what's on' section of local events will keep you up to date with all the latest that's going on in your area.

If you are looking for a job, there are tips on how to get back to work, and all the local contacts you'll need. If you are looking for a local plumber or builder, you can find recommendations from other mums, as well as tips, venues and entertainers for those all-important children's birthday parties!

If you are moving house, or looking at schools, there is a wealth of information to help including links to inspection reports, and comments from local mums on what's good about different pre-schools and playgroups.

And when you need help? Sections on healthcare - doctors and dentists are here, alongside suggestions and sources of support to help you deal with postnatal depression, domestic abuse or parenting difficulties from babies to teens. If your child has special needs, or you are a single parent looking for ideas, there's local groups and contacts that will help."

Local site for local people...

There is a national forum (the Coffee House) but that's the only non-local thing AFAIK. Different from MN altogether.

zippitippitoes · 02/12/2006 11:21

mumsnet dads/men are of course far from being sad

JanH · 02/12/2006 11:25

I was about to say, zippi...

Dads' websites are nothing like this, are they? You become an honorary woman by posting here, uqd (compliment of course!)

(btw zippi, have you still that pointy ele for sale? I was jumping up and down yoo-hooing at you the other day but missed you)

zippitippitoes · 02/12/2006 11:27

sorry I didn't see you..I don't think so, I will check

zippitippitoes · 02/12/2006 11:29

no I sold it on the regular site I think

JinglePrunes · 02/12/2006 11:30

UD that bit of the article is rot.

I had a look on the NM talk boards, JanH - I thought topics etc v similar

zippitippitoes · 02/12/2006 11:31

newspapers are always written for people who don't have inside knowledge though

JanH · 02/12/2006 11:32

Never mind - it was ages ago!

(I love city of marvels btw - didn't know it was you )

JanH · 02/12/2006 11:38

Yes the talkboard topics and conversations are similar, but they would be, wouldn't they? They are mums, talking!

JinglePrunes · 02/12/2006 11:39

lol Janh I know, but I still harbour the hope that somehow MN is different.... and I don't think it is

JanH · 02/12/2006 11:42

Oh but we have much more mad and interesting conversations, and are altogether more fascinating and wonderful

MissMistletoe · 02/12/2006 23:30

Just had a quick look at this thread. I discovered Netmums before MN, and have to say that Netmums is crap. I much prefer MN, but the thing I don't like about it is how some people are really bolshy and can be quite rude and insulting, often really unneccesarily and about trivial things. If you were standing face to face with someone, would you speak to them like that? I think it's too easy to 'hide' behind a nickname on a website and be horrible, and it's not nice. Having a debate is all well and good, but there's no need for the claws that are often extended.

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 13/12/2006 08:44

Do you not think though MissMistletoe, the claws are what makes it interesting sometimes (not always I admit). Take away the claws and you have.... netmums!

paulaplumpbottom · 13/12/2006 10:17

agreed. I found NetMums positivly yawnworthy.

ChristmasCaroligula · 13/12/2006 18:50

I love that name ... nannystate.com. Inspired

Not sure about this bit though:

"And what worse place too. Because the unedited, conflicting, whingeing, piss-taking outpourings of ten thousands of lives is a modern Babel. A minister might learn a lot, if it doesn?t first send her mad."

doesn't sound like she is a Mumsnetter.
