YIKES!!!

But, surely this a case of journalist hype. Or do you think we could live under more than one set of laws. Personally I would be adomantly opposed to this possibility.

multiple legal systems, including sharia

Would be interesting to hear from any American MNetters because my impression is that immigrants to the US, by and large, buy into the American culture and way of life and that there's a greater sense of pride in being 'adopted' by that country. True or not?

Either way, we seem so bloody embarrassed by our culture (maybe because it's been hijacked by illiterate yobs adorned in St George's flags) which is a SHAME, because we DO have a great culture in this country.

This might be perceived as 'middle class' (so frowned on these days), but I'm thinking: our respect and consideration for others, our justice system and constant drive for fairness, the welfare system, a healthy level of self-deprecation and self-parody, wit and sarcasm and (of course) a healthy disrespect for politicians

Okay, there are a lot of flaws, but there's a lot to be proud of so when did we lose that pride and confidence to the point that we aren't insisting on our own legal system amongst those who have sought residence in this country.

There are hundreds of sub-cultural groups that operate their own 'law' system within the over-arching laws of the land. This is nothing more than that, is it?
Think the BMC or is it BMB - the British Medical Council, that holds hearings about alledged malpractice that results in death, ditto police inquiries. Or schools and LEA's with their disciplniary hearings and exclusions. Or confession, in the catholic church. All a way for particular groups and communities to deal with issues of order and transgression, and none incompatible with the laws of the country.

I think it would be completely unworkable and unacceptable for more than one system of law to operate in a democratic country, and can't see it happening.

But then comon sense can't always be relied on!

i dont know about other ethnic groups, but i think in the asian groups, its more the second and third generations tht are the problem. they are the ones who isnsist on their own separateness. not the actual hardworking immigrants themselves.
which is funny, because the countries themselves dont wish to recognise them. im thinking about something the pakistnani president said about the terrorists of july not being pakistani in any way and being borna nd brought up in the uk, therefore british!
