You couldn't make it up.
I feel sorry for his family.
You'd think politicians would learn from the past.

Have I landed on another planet? Are buying drugs and prostitutes now legal?

hackmum · 29/07/2015 08:26

It's not illegal to use the services of a prostitute.

StealthPolarBear · 29/07/2015 09:31

I thought it was illegal to pay for sex. When did that change

StealthPolarBear · 29/07/2015 09:34

I am discusted and shocked! I always thought the prostitutes themselves were legal but the men were involved on illegal activity.
And the cocaine? Which my phone changes to cochineal!
Think I've been asleep for a decade

suzanneyeswecan · 29/07/2015 09:46

I don't think it has ever been illegal to buy or sell sexual services, if you think about it that would be a very difficult law to enforce.
Eg if I was selling sex I could easily claim that I was paid x amount of money for some sort of massage therapy and then had sex with the client.
If sex is legal it's difficult to make selling it illegal.
Drugs on the other are illegal whether or not they are exchanged for money ?

suzanneyeswecan · 29/07/2015 09:53

I think many people feel it must be illegal because they have such powerful moral objections to prostitution.

But the same applies to adultery and few people make the mistake of assuming that adultery must be illegal ?

CoolWheelsPan · 29/07/2015 10:15

Welcome to our planet. Greetings, visitor! Grin

It remains illegal to advertise sexual services.

Drugs - for simple possession he would get 'a word of advice'.

suzanneyeswecan · 29/07/2015 10:35

Illegal to advertise sexual services?
Really?
Escorts have websites, there is a site called 'adultwork'
Afaik it is illegal to run a brothel that's all. ?

Floundering · 29/07/2015 10:38

It is illegal to live off the earnings of a sex worker, ie a pimp but not the actual act of prostitition.

CoolWheelsPan · 29/07/2015 10:40

Yes illegal to advertise sexual services. Those 'escort' web sites are advertising escort services.

suzanneyeswecan · 29/07/2015 10:44

no they explicitly advertise sexual services

CoolWheelsPan · 29/07/2015 10:49

What you mean "hand job - £50, intercourse - £100"? They very probably don't (have you checked?) and IF they did it would remain illegal. One cannot solicit for the purposes of prostitution. A law as old as the hills but updated in 2009. Have a look in the web?

suzanneyeswecan · 29/07/2015 11:11

Typically yes a list of services, these are women who are active on sex work forums and who openly declare earnings to hmrc etc, have upmarket and professional looking websites? and blogs

Okay, I'm Jeff Vadar.Grin

suzanneyeswecan · 29/07/2015 11:25

(I'm not intending to make an argument for or against sex work btw)

Isitmebut · 29/07/2015 11:53

suzanneyeswecan .... you have made your case very well, and there will be many women who only thought their pot-bellied and/or fugly partners wouldn't EVER pay for sex as it WAS illegal, thinking again. lol

HirplesWithHaggis · 29/07/2015 13:52

Soliciting in a public place (eg, street corner) is illegal. For the purposes of prostitution, the internet isn't a "public place".

I think the reasoning is that "innocent" women/children might inadvertantly see street prostitution and feel threatened/horrified/whatever, whereas they'd have to purposefully seek out the aforementioned adultwork etc.

Isitmebut · 29/07/2015 14:01

I'd suggest that Lords-a-leaping on prostitutes a stones throw from Westminster, do not trawl the streets, they would use the less 'exposed' internet and/or recommendations from similar horny old farts as passed down within the Lords subsidized bars. Your tax Pounds at work, folks.
