I can't believe that no one has started a thread on this so far today. It is really really good news for our kids. I know it is not enough but it is a major step in the right direction.
Sweden banned junk food ads during childrens tv years ago and they have the lowest rate of childhood obesity in Europe.

I dont think it makes a difference. how many children are responsible for buying their own happy meal etc?

TooTickyTheLittleRedHen · 17/11/2006 19:45

I think it's fab but wish they would ban adverts for plastic toys too. And adverts for loans, etc, during childrens programmes.

auntymandy · 17/11/2006 19:48

someone on the radio said that drugs drink and cigerrettess (too many double letters there so I added more for safety) dont get advertised but teens use them.

TheHighwayCod · 17/11/2006 19:48

wher is this news hten

Carmenere · 17/11/2006 19:49

Of course it will make a difference, if your child doesn't know about McD's he won't want to go there. And when they get to school and others go there it can be an occasional thing rather than them growing up seeing it advertised every 10 minutes and ergo thinking that eating like that is NORMAL!!

I totally agree about the other ads too.

I agree that parents ultimately hold responsibility for what their child eats but isn't it logical that this is a step in the right direction? Parents who make excuses like 'well my dc only likes junk'(and I am NOT referring to people whose dc's have sn) have less of an excuse if their dc's are not reminded of junk when they watch tv.

Who said anything about them not letting MacDonalds advertise to kids? They just won't be allowed to advertise high salt, fat and sugar content foods.
Everyone knows it's all about branding things nowadays. MacDonalds will still advertise to kids - they'll just be very careful about what they plug - like salads, carrot sticks and milk.

auntymandy · 18/11/2006 08:41

so just because your child asks to go to McDonalds or eat sweets etc you let them?

FrannyandZooey · 18/11/2006 08:47

If advertising to children was not spectacularly successful, why on earth do you think companies spend millions a year doing so?

People's naivety and ignorance about advertising really astonishes me.

auntymandy · 18/11/2006 08:59

sorry for being naive but in my house its the parents that shop not the kids and I have learned how to use the word no and they have to accept they dont get everything they see on TV. If I want to take them to a junk food place I will I dont go just because they ask or we would be thwere every day as we pass one everyday!!
Also I couldnt house all the toys etc DS wants for Christmas because he has seen them on TV.

suedonim · 18/11/2006 12:45

I read recently that although advertising junk food is to be banned, product placement is going to be allowed instead. So McD's will still be there, I don't doubt.

Furball · 18/11/2006 13:20

The ban has to be a good thing. But what is classed as junk food? The manufacturers try and tell us that sunny D is as good for you if not better than fresh juice because of the extras and 'they' claim cheesestrings are just cheese the list is endless.

WideWebWitch · 18/11/2006 13:28

Oh I'm really pleased to read this.

speedymama · 18/11/2006 13:53

Just because something is advertised does not mean you have to go and buy it. How many of us trundle down to DFS every time they have a sale (which appears to be every other week!). I like the new M&S ads but that will not entice me to shop there.

I think it is time parents accept responsibility for what happens in their homes, learn to say no to their children and develop selective hearing to tune out from their incessant whining and demands.

And before anyone jumps on me, I think advertisers should advertise their products responsibly and ethically.

Hallgerda · 18/11/2006 15:10

I agree with speedymama.

laneydaye · 18/11/2006 15:12

ds "mum can i have a mcdonalds?"
mum " No son definately not no way "

end of conversation..

I am the parent and I am solely in charge of what my children consume and acquire. They know the meaning of the word no. Sad to think that there are parents who have so little or no control over their own households that they require a ban on advertising to give them peace from their pestering children.

dinny · 19/11/2006 10:16

I think it's great news.

fair enough that the parent decides what children eat when they're young, but advertising crap means they're more likely to want to buy it when they're older (ie teenagers spending allowance).

TeeCee · 19/11/2006 10:36

I realised how great this was the other night.
My DD is 5 and has SN's so doesn't really say much and would never see a Maccy D's advert and then ask for one, it just wouldn't register with her in that way so junk food doesn't really affect us, but she had her school friend over to sleep and they the TV was on at some point and there was an ad for M&S.

This little girl piped up 'oh wow look, I just saw broccoli on the telly"!!!!!!

I thought that was great.

southeastastra · 21/11/2006 11:58

although it may be great for viewers, it means that ITV probably won't be able to make childrens tv programmes for much longer, so a good thing??

oliveoil · 21/11/2006 11:59

Oh thank god, my house is groaning under the weight of all the stuff my children demand as I am unaware there is a little word called NO.

I am saved, blessed are those in command who watch over me and my household.

Amen
